It makes me cringe and also the word ''courting''

Any words that make you cringe?

When I was little I was best friends with a girl whose parents were very old fashioned and a bit batty. She used to refer to jumpers as 'jerseys'. It drove me mad. Now I quite like it, in a retro-kitsch kind of way. ?mad stroking of Cath Kidston merchandise?

TaudrieTattoo · 27/08/2011 15:21

This thread is making me twitch.

Can I also nominate "snazzy", "with-it", "trendy" and "mod"?

TaudrieTattoo · 27/08/2011 15:22

And in a similar vein, "bang on-trend".

And the use of the singular; "trouser", "pant" and "tight".

Salmotrutta · 27/08/2011 15:32

I'm not that keen on "splendid" or "Cheerio".

Please say marvellous or Goodbye instead.

... Thank you.

CJCregg · 27/08/2011 15:32

I came on here to say 'blouse' but I'm too late Grin

Also loathe 'pieces', especially when they're 'teamed' with each other.

How can clothes be in a fucking team?

CJCregg · 27/08/2011 15:33

missmiss, when I was little my grandmother used to buy me Guernseys. I loved them.

Salmotrutta · 27/08/2011 15:34

Up here a "piece" is a sandwich/butty! Grin

Jeely piece= jam sandwich

Thumbwitch · 27/08/2011 15:47

"capsule wardrobe"

pinkthechaffinch · 27/08/2011 15:48

'grockles' -local slang used to describe holidaymakers-a stupid word used by stupid people

dreamboat

traceybeaker · 27/08/2011 15:52

lol.

I am with you all on most of the words.

I also can't stand the way some people say words, difficult to show you what I mean by writing it.

SONY when people pronounce in SON [ rhymes with BON] E.

don't know if you can understand that .

I like frock and courting, very quaint words which remind me of my nan.

Slacks, eew horrible word which conjures images of 70's style navy blue mum-trousers.

Surprised no one has mentioned drawers, now that is a good word.

And don't ever say 'belly' to me, that is a vile term.

MsScarlettInTheLibrary · 27/08/2011 16:04

My MIL says 'panties' to DD. I have to restrain myself every single time. I've told her not to use it but she looks at me like I'm mad.

She says 'let's get your panties on' and I shout 'KNICKERS!' somewhere in the background, much to DD's amusement.

If I ever hear DD say it I shall commit violence upon MIL's person.

Salmotrutta · 27/08/2011 16:06

Absolutely loathe adults using the word "tummy" ... when speaking to other adults
Why???
You are grown ups so just stop it. OK?

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 27/08/2011 16:10

Fuck yeahhhhhhhh to jeggings - what a damned fool stupid made up stupid word!

Rockabilly - what?

Ditsy - Beg pardon?

Pleather - this is a word?

Anything where little is shortened to l'il - projectile vomit time!

Agree with everyone on 'making love' -

Juicy, leak, moist, slippery, loose, slimey and plunge are all very very dirty words.

Tchootnika · 27/08/2011 16:14

I like 'frock' and 'courting'.
Lots of completely unacceptable words on here already ('li'l man' has to be near the top, though).

I think someone's mentioned this already, but 'portion' is, for some reason, an awful word.
Sorry to say, this, OP, and I don't know why this is, but I've also always had problems with the word 'beaker' (I don't like 'tumbler' much, either). And 'pantry'. And 'broth'. Awful.

Tchootnika · 27/08/2011 16:16

Eurgh, just saw 'jeggings'.
New worst word ever.

traceybeaker · 27/08/2011 16:33

tchootnika..........................How dare you? lol

broth yep hate it.

jeggings..............I can't even whisper it.

I also do not like bean bag, its not a bag so don't call it one.

On property programmes when they say

forever home
crash pad
WOW factor

or describe a room as a "space" - it's a bleeding room!

Bonsoir · 27/08/2011 17:07

Frock is unbelievably sexless.

Bathsheba · 27/08/2011 17:17

I've recently started using 'Knicks' instead if knickers or pants....I'm loving that.

I hate limb and lover

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 27/08/2011 17:20

Panties, meh, but add liners and it makes my head explode.

Panty-liners

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 27/08/2011 17:21

Don't go to Bristol Bathsheba

Eglu · 27/08/2011 18:14

If we are adding jeggings then surely we must also add treggings, even worse.

acsec · 27/08/2011 18:18

I love frock and often use it :)

HATE panties - urgh!

Agree with perfumedlife they are fairy cakes!

judgejudyforpm · 27/08/2011 18:38
