It makes me cringe and also the word ''courting''

Any words that make you cringe?

Oh dear, you would all hate me, I like nothing better than to make a brew and sit in the lounge to see if there is anything on the telly. Preferably after applying some lippy. I went to Uni, and I also eat veggies. I have a hubby, and also some kids. I must be incredibly common.

Mandy2003 · 28/08/2011 16:20

Thr verb to lounge.
Loungewear (also cruisewear).
Loungecore.

Sofa.

Thumbwitch · 28/08/2011 16:26

and leisurewear!! don't forget that one

Thumbwitch · 28/08/2011 16:26

Phew! not that bad after all..

Bandwithering · 28/08/2011 16:28

cruisewear! that sounds dodgy. brothel creepers and cruisewear

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 28/08/2011 16:41

For some reason 'lounge room' (used by various Australian housemates past for 'living room') makes my toes curl. Also 'meal' and 'creamy'.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 28/08/2011 17:36

And 'settee'.
And 'for you' in e.g. 'Best strawberries selected just for you'. So patronising somehow.

Shoutymomma · 28/08/2011 17:47

What about all the things in shops that are "made with love"? Where is all the stuff made with spite and venom?

TaudrieTattoo · 28/08/2011 17:49

"with a twist"

callow · 28/08/2011 17:52

Another good old Australian one that makes me cringe -

singlet - it means a vest

fit2drop · 28/08/2011 17:56

I hate

"Chillax"

THAT REALLY MAKES MY TEETH ITCH!!!!

see even typing it made me shouty

DougalDaydream · 28/08/2011 18:08

ciggie/cigs
hubby
making love
love nest
belly
crimbo
xmas
hollibobs
lounge (very sleazy and grubby with a nicotine yellow haze)

There are loads more that give me the rage....but I am too irritated to think of more now

Faffalina · 28/08/2011 18:25

Used to hate "pleasant" as a child.

I hate it when newspapers report that someone has "bedded" someone else. Who says that in real life??

Tchootnika · 28/08/2011 19:37

Grin at x-posts with Bandwithering

'Pleasant' - I think I used to find vexing too... (sounds likie stale Battenburg cake).

'Bedded' - also terrible, sounds like piss-soaked straw.

'Sofa''s not nearly as bad as 'settee', though. And of course everyone loves a 'poufe', don't they?

Katisha · 28/08/2011 19:41

I realised today that I also have a problem with the phrase "food for thought". Can't put my finger on why.

Faffalina · 28/08/2011 19:47

oh and don't even get me started on management phrases like:

blue sky thinking
360 degree thinking
networking
touch base
close of play

aaargh

OriginalPoster · 28/08/2011 19:58

Petticoat
Stays
Roll on
Slip
Garters
Haberdashery

RufusTFirefly · 28/08/2011 20:18

My mum came up with the following gems:

Blouse-ooon (blouson)
Dustpan and hand-broom (WTF is a hand-broom? It's a brush)
And the worst: "a pair of bra" Silly old moo.

Although I am not middle class by upbringing, I hate toilet and pardon. Silly bastardised French words that sound ugly. A child I lived next door to once would pronounce them as "toy-LERT" and "par-DYN". Hideous.

Others:

Lounge-diner
Through-room
Rotisserie (I think they are rather out of fashion anyway)
Pelmet (just sounds daft)
Maisonette
Car valeting (no, just cleaning the bloody thing)
Pleated (No! NO! Don't make me wear any garment that's pleated!)

microserf · 28/08/2011 20:19

i HATE "ickle".

it's not a word, despite what JK Rowling thinks.

OriginalPoster · 28/08/2011 20:20

To die for
Must have
Wow factor

themothershipcalling · 28/08/2011 20:22

Oh 'ickle' in relation to anything child related particularly annoys me however I do like 'frock' because it always make me think of a very good friend of mine so therefore makes me smile...

Pagwatch · 28/08/2011 20:33

I love frock.
And petticoat.
And décolletage
And atomizer
And brooch

They make me think of my mum in the 60s. She seemed such a woman. Being a woman had all this language to do with texture and ritual and scent. It was like an armour. She sat in front of her mirror and it was like an magic thing
Well to me it was

Bandwithering · 28/08/2011 20:48

so can I ask,,,, what is acceptable. I usually say 'loo' but if i were ringing up to say order a new bathroom, what would I call it?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 28/08/2011 21:49

Oh Christ, I'd forgotten about 'bedded'. It is horrid and makes me think of stables. Also 'bedding' when applied to duvets, bedlinen etc. I used to buy 'bedding' for my hamster.

DougalDaydream · 28/08/2011 21:50

Just what I was going to ask! Grin

A convenience maybe? Or a lavatory?

Or a bog?
