I've always been quite anti smoking had a gran who dies of lung cancer, but since I was pregnant with DD and now that I'm out and about with her it really angers me when people are smoking in public areas, if it were up to me I'd ban smoking in all public places ie high streets, door ways to, restaurants, childrens play areas etc and don't even get me started on the bit outside the hospital and make people smoke in smoking rooms or back streets. I got abuse from a woman the other day who came over to speak to DD and puffed her smoke all over her when I asked her not to.

well i dont agree that ppl can rule over any other group of ppl its our right to smoke or not smoke i do smoke but if ppl dont smoke i dont smoke in their home or car or around them if they are sick or allergic etc, but why should i stay home why cant non smokers stay home why arent there business and public areas where the non smokers are not allowed heck we cant even smoke in our cars or in bars etc...but the government and the public sure do benefit from us on so many levels and yet the non smokers love to bash the smokers...then lets go back to red headed ppl, fat ppl, blondes, burnettes, veggietarians, meat eaters, come on really?

AfternoonDelight · 22/08/2011 19:02

I walk 15 minutes from the station to the centre of town to work each morning - usually get behind a smoker at some stage which is highly unpleasant early in the morning. How unprofessional to turn up smelling of fags - don't they realise?!

GypsyMoth · 22/08/2011 19:14

Op didn't hang around long!!

reelingintheyears · 22/08/2011 19:18

They never do Sara ..it's a wind up.

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/08/2011 19:20

So not only a strident anti smoker Toniguy, but a disgusting snob as well.
Pardon me while I adjust my ill fitting clothes and straighten my ponytail.

FabbyChic · 22/08/2011 19:22

Ban smoking in public places? Get a grip. What about the rest of the pollution?

If there was no smokers there would be no national health service, then where would you be? Could you afford to go private to give birth and get ante natal care?

I doubt it.

For every pack of fags that is sold the government gets 65% of the cost AT LEAST.

Where do you propose they get that revenue from if there was no smokers?

Asmodeus · 22/08/2011 19:23

YABVVU. The world is full of pollutants that harm us. All of them coming from man.

I know a great many people take exception to smokers (Like myself!) pointong out that cars cause damage to people, animals and the entire bloody planet but it IS a valid point. The damage being done by cars is on a Global scale and beacuse they're considered so "essential" people throw the argument into the bin out of hand.

NEWSFLASH - Unless you live in a rural area you do not NEED a car. We have four children under the age of 5 and manage school runs etc quite well without one.

I do, however, have to walk my kids past mvarious cars idling in traffic waiting for the lights to go green while they pump toxins into my babies faces and I'm not even supposed to compare that to smoking? WTF???

I don't smoke in my house or around my kids and when I do smoke outside I try to make sure I find a quiet spot where I can stop. But I will NOT give up my right to do whatever the hell I want to my body to bow to a bunch of hypocritical non-smoker's who are telling me off one minute and jumping into their car the next. And even if they don't drive you can guarentee they'll be doing something that's detrimental to our planet in one way or another.

And... breathe...

toniguy · 22/08/2011 19:25

That's 'me lady b! Oh and at thing about smoking keeping your weight down - it's delusional! They're usually a right lardy bunch you see fagging it around the place !

smartyparts · 22/08/2011 19:44

That was the other thing about Paris - the fag buts! Covered every sq. centimetre of footpath.

I often wonder if smokers (in this country, as in France they plainly don't give a shit), feel like social pariahs? They have become so maligned, so scorned and stigmatised. Is the defensive behaviour because of this or do they genuinely feel they have a God given right to smoke around anyone?

I am not having a dig, much as I loathe smoking, I think people should smoke if they want to but not where the rest of us have to be shrouded in it.

I am genuinely interested to know if smokers feel a bit guilty when they light up in public?

trixymalixy · 22/08/2011 19:46

YAB a bit U,I hate smoking, but people have a right to damage themselves by smoking. I have no problem with people who want to smoke as long as they do it in the in the appropriate places, I.e. Outside, but Not outside the children's hospital when I'm taking my asthmatic DS to see the asthma consultant.

As for this guff about cars, well they are trying to make them less polluting in the same way they are trying to stop people smoking, by making it prohibitively expensive. The existence of cars does not make smoking right though and I never understand this argument smokers use to justify their habit.

AdelaofBlois · 22/08/2011 19:48

I found all the openly French people I didn't actually know really infuriating when in Paris. They should be banned from public spaces.

Malcontentinthemiddle · 22/08/2011 19:49

I'd feel guilty if I lit up leaning over a baby's pram.
Otherwise not. Unless you're very clearly in someone's face, why would you?
Most smokers would try to be considerate in where and when they lit up: it's just there are some whingey arses who will find a reason to complain wherever that should be.

K999 · 22/08/2011 19:49

I'm a smoker. I wish non smokers would stay away from me whilst I smoke. Especially the ones who tut tut and wave their hands frantically in front of their faces. It's so off putting.

Asmodeus · 22/08/2011 19:49

Trixy The car thing isn't a justification for me. It's a valid counter-point. My justification as to why I do is is simple. I do it because I want to and beacuse I can.

michelleseashell · 22/08/2011 19:56

I'm with you Lady beagle! :o

I love the thrill of smoking in ill-fitting non-fire retardant clothing! Add to that my corpulence and high pony tail and I could go up like a candle!

Nicotine and fear is such a rush!!

toniguy · 22/08/2011 19:59

Actually on a serious note for a moment, the point about 'me being a snob lol- well , it is a class issue really. Surely its widely known now that smoking has rapidly declined among the more highly educated and higher socio economic groups . In fact I think the only group where smoking is increasing is poorly qualified girls from lower socio economic groups.

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 22/08/2011 20:03

I am genuinely interested to know if smokers feel a bit guilty when they light up in public?

Hmmm. Nope. No guilt here. However, if I was some prissy-faced disapprover wearing six pairs of knickers and worrying about what everyone else might be doing and how I could spoilt it.........

GilbonzoTheSecretPsych0Duck · 22/08/2011 20:03

When I smoke in public I find a quiet place with no other people about. If I'm eating outside at a café and fancy a fag after my meal I will walk away from the tables and smoke around the corner/across the road or something. I carry my fag butt until I find a bin because I hate litter.

I thought that made me a reasonable and considerate smoker. Except now I've read this thread I think I may have to whip myself, shave my head and wear a bell. You see I live in France, I'm fat and sometimes I have my hair in a ponytail. Total fucking scum I am.

K999 · 22/08/2011 20:04

Toni, you're right.

Note to self: hand back my law degree and ditch my very successful career....

GilbonzoTheSecretPsych0Duck · 22/08/2011 20:04

Oh, and having just seen another post, I only have a BTEC ND in childcare so I'm fairly uneducated and have a low paid career. Fuck the whipping. I'll just slit my throat.

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 22/08/2011 20:05

Total fucking French fag butt throwing inconsiderate fatty smoking scum Gilbonzo. I think I might love you!

Asmodeus · 22/08/2011 20:05

What ChumleeIsMyHomeboy said

smartyparts · 22/08/2011 20:08

Bonkers!

It may be legal but surely even the most narrow minded, belligerent smoker must realise it's at best just a bit unpleasant for the non-smokers around?

I'm sure they'd be amenable to the concept of guilt for other anti-social behaviour, so why not smoking, which really is unpleasant to most non-smokers?

Justifying it as being 'legal' just adds to the argument that smokers are selfish imo.

GilbonzoTheSecretPsych0Duck · 22/08/2011 20:08

HA! smelly fag breath in your face
