to think smokers should be made to smoke away from people?

I've always been quite anti smoking had a gran who dies of lung cancer, but since I was pregnant with DD and now that I'm out and about with her it really angers me when people are smoking in public areas, if it were up to me I'd ban smoking in all public places ie high streets, door ways to, restaurants, childrens play areas etc and don't even get me started on the bit outside the hospital and make people smoke in smoking rooms or back streets. I got abuse from a woman the other day who came over to speak to DD and puffed her smoke all over her when I asked her not to.

We thought it would be difficult to 'police' the smoking ban in general, but it seemed not. Everyone obeyed which amazed me. Although I am sure there must be pubs/clubs somewhere in the country that people think fuck it and landlords allow smoking. I don't know any.

As for cool well maybe as younger people we look cool standing outside the pub having a fag and banter but not so cool stood on your own outside a restaurant in the rain. You look stupid. Standing in the street on an afternoon trying to not annoy people like the OP, you look stupid and embarrassed. Also not so cool when you get into your 50's and the effects start really kicking in. e.g lung cancer amongst others at worst, grey palour and cats bum mouth at best.

I still don't see how smoking impacts on anyone's life except the smokers themselves.
Now it is outside FFS leave them alone.
What is people's problem with seeing a total stranger smoking in the street?
Do you mean you want to police us on beaches and parks as well adam or am I missing your point?
And what's with all the insults.
I repeat How does it impact on your life?

They aren't insults though, are they? They're opinions.

When I used to smoke, I pondered at the difference to. To me there it's discernible - young people languidly smoking, in a group, part of the social scene - as compared to older people, coughing and sucking away as if their lives depended on it. Perception is different for everyone, I suppose but the effects are what they are.

Smoking's legal with certain restrictions, many non-smokers/ex-smokers couldn't care less as long as it doesn't impact on them.

No I don't want to see it banned outdoors. Someone else down thread did and said it would be difficult to police. I thought that about the ban as it is and was surprised that the british people just laid down and did what they were told. It annoyed the hell out of me at the time but I suppose I got used to going outside to smoke as I didn't have a choice, I had to have my fix or I didn't feel right.

Just making the point re the OP that is why perfectly nice, intelligent people are smoking in the street and annoying the OP, the smoking ban and that they need their fix to get them through the day.

I've created a smokers corner in chat. Grin

adamschic · 24/08/2011 11:29

It's nothing new the smokers corner. Think I was in one once.

Scholes34 · 24/08/2011 12:20

Mmm, impact. Well, just for starters, when we return from my BIL's, we have to wash everything (worn or not), as the stale smoke smell is on everything, even though they don't smoke in the house when our children are there. When BIL and SIL visit, we used to have to wash out the wheelie bin to get rid of the smell from stubbed out cigarettes (smell is much worse than the refuse), but now we give them a plant pot filled with earth to avoid that problem. At a recent family funeral, my cousin's 10 year old daughter got out of the car, came to hug us and simply reeked of smoke. My children refuse to go to my cousin's house because of the cigarette smoke.

FagAshLill · 24/08/2011 12:28

You wash out the Wheelie bin? Seriously?

Scholes34 · 24/08/2011 12:49

Fagash - there's a company that does it once a month. Follows the bin lorry on its round. Just £2.00.

Just thought of another good thing about giving up (amongst many thoughts being on this thread), an ashless world, bliss.

I'm a sanctimonious cow aren't I? tbh I'm just proud as it's one of the hardest things to do.
