I've never heard that term either, though when I googled it I realised I had heard of the monkey being tried and hanged. I had to Shock at the 'somple folk' of Hartlepool not knowing what a Frenchman would look like. This was the Napoleonic wars, not the flipping stone age!!!

Apparently the scholarly excuse for people here not recognising a monkey is that it was actually a small boy or "powder monkey" and he was probably about 10 :( I think I'd rather it was a monkey!!
