AIBU re Pizza Hut buffet?

I took DS to Pizza Hut today for a treat. We both ordered the all you can eat buffet. DS' plate consisted of 1 slice of pizza, 5 slices of cucumber, 3 cherry tomatoes, croutons, a bread stick, potato salad and some bacon bits. I had 2 platefuls of filled of salad (lettuce, onion, beetroot, potato salad, peppers, cucumber, sweetcorn, peppers etc) and also had 4 slices of pizza altogether (but didn't eat it all).

However, I witnessed one very large lady fill her plate with a slice of every pizza available (6 pizzas), topped with pasta. She did this twice while we were there. Plus, as soon as new pizzas arrived people swamped the table and took way more than a human with a normal sized stomach could eat!

Is this normal practise in Pizza Hut?! Or do I just live in the wild??

I am diabetic and have to limit the amount of carbs and fats I eat. I went into PizzaHut ONCE and asked for a child's plate for the buffet as I knew I would only eat a child's portion of pizza etc. They very rudely said no, even once I'd explained. I left but felt embarrassed about it all day.

Likewise in fish and chip shops I can never get a half portion of chips even if I offer to pay for a full one Hmm

MotivatedSperm · 17/08/2011 12:13

Its "eat as much as you like" not "eat as much as you can"

There is no competitive element implied

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 17/08/2011 12:13

No. But I'm not going to eat things I don't like just so people don't think I have an eating disorder. I won't eat a cake for eg if I'm out for a coffee with friends if I'm not hungry. If I'm hungry then I'll eat. I refuse to eat somehting to make others feel better about having something iyswim. Have a cakeif you want one. Just don't try and force one onto me to justify your choice. I don't understand eating for the sake of eating, but I AM a real foodie. I love cooking and eating. But not to please other people. Which I think is kind of the point of this thread. The woman was eating what the hell she wanted. Noone's business really, even though it may be shocking to see.

dolldaggabuzzbuzz · 17/08/2011 12:20

I've never really noticed what other people are eating, I'm too busy stuffing my face!

celebmum · 17/08/2011 12:22

We used to go to pizza hut at lunchtime (close to work!) when it was someones birthday etc, as a lot if people did this we'd get discount tooGrin!

We used to have a competition on who could eat the most slices... I'm not proud to admit this but my record was 14slices Inc crusts! Blush( btw I'm not exactly a 'fat person', size 12Confused)

Not sure i could mange it now! Not been in years tho!

Migsy1 · 17/08/2011 12:22

Why does the fact that you had a small amount and others had loads bother you? I'm not sure I understand the point of your question. I would like to know what is behind your question.
Do you think the price would be lower if people ate less?
Do you find people stuffing their faces with pizza distasteful or socially unacceptable?
What don't you like about it?

PerryCombover · 17/08/2011 12:24

fuckity

totally agree

maxybrown · 17/08/2011 12:25

pop I would be very hungry if I only ate one pice of pizza Blush they are about an inch across, ok an inch and a half if you are lucky.

PeopleCallMeTricky · 17/08/2011 12:27

Op you need to look at yourself and try and question why you are so interested in what someone else eats.
Also, speaking as someone fat, it's not exactly news that fat people tend to eat more than thin people. Not really worth starting a thread over.

southeastastra · 17/08/2011 12:29

can you really get pizza from a buffet? i thought you had to order your own one!

Popbiscuit · 17/08/2011 12:32

Me too, Maxy which is why if I'm going to have pizza, I have one slice of homemade or really good quality pizza and a massive salad loaded with tons of interesting vegetables. The fibre is what fills you up.

Pizza Hut is just so bad for you and IMO not worth the calories. I think everything in moderation but Pizza Hut really doesn't belong in anyone's diet, sadly.

Highlander · 17/08/2011 12:33

All you can eat buffets are a total rip-off unless you plan to stuff yourself silly. I have no problem with people eating what they pay for.

worraliberty · 17/08/2011 12:39

Why didn't you just put it on an adult plate?

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2011 12:40

oooooooh all you can eat...mmmmmmmmm
their pizzas are lovely, pasta ok, not keen on salad
I'm on adiet, this thread is torture.

I am going to have a virtual PH all you can eat buffet and invite all the nice people on this thread. ChippingIn and Rusty, you're invited in order to make friends - Rusty, I am fairly sure Chipping was just looking to make some incorrect assumptions based on one aspect, I refuse to believe she meant that.

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2011 12:41

sea they bring sliced pizzas out and you can get a slice
I have just had 87 cals worth of soup for my lunch while reading athread about gooey cheesey pizzas...there has to be some irony there

Stealth - I hope Chipping will still be friends with me - she's a poster I normally have great respect for, which was why I was a bit Shock to see that comment - but I didn't really feel I could let it pass. I'm sure it was meant as a joke, but it's that kind of joke that perpetuates the stereotype that over 50's aren't really up to the mark - as a 55-year old working in IT it's something I see a lot, usually from younger people that I know are less knowledgeable and experienced than I am...

And I totally support everything else she said!

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2011 12:54

Yes, I honestly think that was meant to illustrate a point about stereotypes, which is what I meant in my first post but wasn't articulate enough :o
So, is that a low fat olive oil branch?
Cheesey garlic bread anyone?

CheerMum · 17/08/2011 13:13

mmmm pizza hut buffet yummmmmyy

muffinflop et al, feel free to come and watch me eat at Pizza Hut, my personal record is 13 slices but if i add salad then i average about 8 slices.

and, as i am HUGELY overweight, so you can all hoik up your judgy-pants while i merrily stuff my fat face with yummy pizza. it's a win-win situation!

sherbertdipdab · 17/08/2011 13:16

I was a waitress in PH during my Uni years,
All you can eat buffet was always swarming with hungry students with a mission to eat as much as possible. It always use to amaze us and make us laugh at how much some lanky students could pack in. We use to have to elbow our way over to the buffet holding hot pizzas... nostalgia

And how the bowl for the salad could be made 'bigger' by placing cucumbers round the edges to form an 'extended rim' (you couldn't get refills in the 90's!)

Pawsnclaws · 17/08/2011 13:21

Mandy2003 sorry not laughing at you, but your comment about the child-sized plate made me think of Alan Partridge and his extra large plate at the Linton Travel Tavern!

pigletmania · 17/08/2011 13:22

I personally don't give a flying fuck what people assume when I am gorging at a buffet, I an probably never going to see them again. Eating out for me is an annual treat so i'ii make the most of it and ignore the cats bum faces

cardibach · 17/08/2011 13:24

"Sorry - cyber punch me if you like, but there is something..... not good... about seeing really fat people gorging themselves.

It's like watching someone with emphysema lighting up a fag. You see it and can't help thinking, 'oh dear'."

spudulika this is horrible. First 'gorging' is a value laden word. What distinguishes it from 'eating'? I suggest it's only your perception.
Second, it is completely unlike someone with emphysema lighting a fag. It is possible for someone damaging themselves with tobacco or alcohol to give up completely. A fat person doesn't have this option. They have to eat. Should they only do it in private so as not to offend you? OK, they should make better choices, etc, but how do you know some of them haven't? How do you know whether they are losing weight and used to be bigger? How do you know whether the unhealthy food you see them eating is a rare 'treat'?
And even if it isn't, what business is it of yours?

K999 · 17/08/2011 13:30

I'm actually off to PH now....for the buffet! Treat for dd2 as she has just come back from her first day at school. Smile

yuma · 17/08/2011 13:30

Yes. It's All You Can Eat! Might as well get your money's worth.
