AIBU re Pizza Hut buffet?

I took DS to Pizza Hut today for a treat. We both ordered the all you can eat buffet. DS' plate consisted of 1 slice of pizza, 5 slices of cucumber, 3 cherry tomatoes, croutons, a bread stick, potato salad and some bacon bits. I had 2 platefuls of filled of salad (lettuce, onion, beetroot, potato salad, peppers, cucumber, sweetcorn, peppers etc) and also had 4 slices of pizza altogether (but didn't eat it all).

However, I witnessed one very large lady fill her plate with a slice of every pizza available (6 pizzas), topped with pasta. She did this twice while we were there. Plus, as soon as new pizzas arrived people swamped the table and took way more than a human with a normal sized stomach could eat!

Is this normal practise in Pizza Hut?! Or do I just live in the wild??

I spent a month in Argentina where there are "Tenador Libres" on every corner, all you can eat buffets with MASSIVE barbeques plus every other type of food, sweet and savoury, you could possibly want. We went to one several times a week, and ate more meat in that month that I have ever eaten before or since.
Why? Because I could! It was ALL YOU CAN EAT!!!
But I'm skinny, so you probably wouldn't have noticed me......

notlettingthefearshow · 17/08/2011 22:44

People can be greedy when it's all you can eat - it can be taken as a challenge!

For some people they may starve themselves all day to eat that much, and it may be a rare treat and the only time they eat out.

I'm not saying it's right, but there's no need to judge. You don't see what they eat the rest of the time. It would annoy me more to see people deliberately waste food (as the teenage story above).

strict "turn you telly now onto "itv" news and look at the children of Somalia"

Oh, give over, you sound like my mum circa 1975. "Those kids in Africa would love the food on your plate so eat it all up."

It is entirely possible to care about the children in Somalia/country of your choice and have a fat arse, ffs.

strictlovingmum · 17/08/2011 23:12

Onemorning you sound as deep as petri dish, love, maybe only maybe if tried to teach out children not waste food, we would all be better for it.
P.S By the way my post was never about size of derriere, mine or yours and
I also didn't know that it was not acceptable to wast food back 1975, but today it is.

PerryCombover · 17/08/2011 23:50

fatties will be around for a long time it seems, so you better sharpen those bony elbows if you plan to get near the buffet anytime soon

organicgardener · 17/08/2011 23:55

LOL @ PC Grin

And honestly some people take life way too seriously.

Bogeyface · 18/08/2011 00:03

LOTF I apologise most sincerely.

And just out of curiosity did you pay for your ticket to the far side of fuck with your air miles as you seem to be a frequent traveller to that part of the world? :o:o:o

mumeeee · 18/08/2011 00:04

YABU, It's an all you can eat buffet,People are alowed to eat as little or as much as they like,

Bogeyface · 18/08/2011 00:09

Strict as laudible as your sentiment is, I think you are failing to grasp the basic problem with famine.

It has nothing to do with wasted food in the west but with the inequality of food distribution. This is because poor countries, or those with corrupt governments, dont have the means to buy it, and rich countries do. If you want to solve the world food crisis then support charities that lobby for better long term support for these poor/corrupt countries instead of having a go at someone for chucking away a slice of pizza.

The west has eyes bigger than its belly, there is enough food produced per year to feed everyone in the world what they need (not want, need). The problem is political and I suggest you direct your anger at those that can change that.

Not advocating food waste btw, it is a bug bear of mine too, but I know that refusing to bin a half eaten meal wont change the world.

littlebluespring · 18/08/2011 00:12

Hansieom, although I know you are struggling to get over the trauma and will not darken the doors of Pizza Hut again, I do know the solution to this problem should you return.

If you are at a Pizza Hut and teens (and for that matter other people who are old enough to know better) are acting like wolves around the buffet, and your children cannot get anything to eat, despite the staff repeatedly refilling the buffet, but all still taken by wolves again...

tell the staff that your kids can't get anything to eat. They will bring out one of the large margherita pizzas that they are cooking for the buffet and put it on your table. This has been my experience anyway.

Strict

I think wasting food is terrible, FYI. But linking it to the plight of the starving in Somalia is simplistic and stupid. Overweight people I know recognise the horrible irony that people are eating themselves to death over here, and starving to death in other countries. The world is a very unfair place.

I work for a charity and have raised a significant amount (£500k+) to help the people in East Africa who are hungry. Have you done anything other than be smug on the internet?

Cruntie · 18/08/2011 11:03

Pizza Hut is lush. We used go to the lunchtime buffet once a week at uni and gorge. There was always enough to go round, and people of all shapes and sizes tucking in.

OP is BU by way of being a stealth-boasting, sizeist busybody food facist.

One particular group of people, however, was significantly worse than the rest. Suffice to relate it was not the 'large' customers, but rather a particular ethnic group. I would obviously never disclose which one on a public forum!

Oh, so it's not just the fatties we're bashing, but the nig-nogs as well, now?

Letz · 18/08/2011 12:40

YABU she paid for all you can eat. On an unrelated sidenote, buffets make me feel physically sick all those grubby kids poking around in food thats been left out for god knows how long yuck. The only ever time I went to Pizza hut I ordered from the menu - it was crap and my DD picked up rotavirus from the filthy highchair o.0

bottleofbeer · 18/08/2011 13:47

Hmmm our local PH makes you pay for the salads...but anyhoo... I cannot eat more than 2 slices of PH pizza, no idea why but it really bloats me like nothing else and believe me I can put food away [grins]

The Chinese however! mind you if you leave excessive waste they make you pay again (fair enough I suppose. It at least makes you think twice about taking more than you know you can eat but it makes me paranoid that they're eyeing my leftovers and deciding if I left enough to justify charging me again heh) but no matter how good my intentions (I WILL get my money's worth) you really can't eat as much as you think you can which is why these places make money. Oh, and they charge you well over the odds for drinks incase you're in the minority of people who can and do eat more food than their money actually covered.

Kewcumber · 18/08/2011 19:05

"Oh, so it's not just the fatties we're bashing, but the nig-nogs as well, now" Hmm so you didn't assume that she meant the Welsh or the French then but homed in on the most racist interpretation you could think of and used a term most people would find hugely offensive just for affect.

rhondajean · 18/08/2011 19:21

We love the Pizza Hut buffet. We are a gym bore family - you will find us there at least 6 days out of the week and we try to eat healthily and cook at home most of the time - but every so often we go and we go bananas. We always start with a plate of salad each and then its fair game for how much we can each eat. We then just have a small snack later on that day.

I do get abit embarassed thinking people might be judging me but you know what, its once in a blue moon (probably 2 -3 times a year which is a bit sooner). I do get annoyed by the ones who pile everything onto their plate at once. We live in Scotland and I went to one in Glasgow once, and I swear, it was like a horde of locusts every time new pizzas came out.

If you can see there are lots of people using the buffet, take one or two slices at a time, there is more coming!!!!!!!

zest01 · 18/08/2011 19:49

yabu - it's all you can eat and if you can't eat as much as others then that's just the way it is. If it bothers you so much, don't go there and choose to eat someplace where you can just order and eat your own meal.
