AIBU?

7yo dd was told at swimming pool to wear the top part of her bikini

I sent the kids to a holiday club today where they have a pool. They were wearing the bottom part of a bikini and the 7yo (very skinny as well) was told to wear the top part of her bikini tomorrow. I think that's just weird and I'm feeling a bit upset about it. AIBU?

It may just be they are worried someone will complain which, given some of the prudish remarks on this post I can understand.

I personally think bikinis arent neccesary for young children and would get her a swimsuit but on the other hand I don't think there is anything wrong in an undeveloped girl being topless.

Pools can have quite rigid rules but this seems plain daft.

exoticfruits sad isn't it that its come to this, and the fact still remains that most paedophiles are known to the family not strangers.

Mrswoodentop, I agree that if a child has to cover their top half, a bikini or tankini is preferable to a one piece as it easier to get on and off.

Agree mrswoodentop.

Bikinis are just about fashion- little girls love them because they are like those mummy wears, has nothing to do with 'accessorizing the breasts'.

Those Boden ones are really sweet.

meditrina you weren't the only one. I would definatly consider them more acceptable due to style/quality. Obviously I have not been considering things ideologically enough.

I don't expect that the staff could care less if it was one piece, a bikini, a tankini or just the bottoms. They do care about the possible fall out.
It is very sad borderlass, but when you get people who think that all 6 yr olds should be covered up on the beach, to the extent that they would move away from the naked ones (I kid you not!) It is very unfair to blame the staff.

would you put them a bra because mummy does Hmm, wouldnt think so?

Completely agree with manicinsomniac on the first page. Can you imagine if the staff had to decide which developing kids had enough breast tissue to warrant a bikini top (which some 7yos would) on a case by case basis? Very embarrassing for the kids and totally inappropriate.
OP YABU.

Sorry clicked to early. Meant to say it's much easier for them to say full costumes or both parts of a bikini for all girls/women and trunks for boys/men.

MillyR · 15/08/2011 22:51

MQ, surely parents would do that? Why would it have to involve staff?

Don't think it really matters what they wear, but I have only ever seen young toddler girls in just bottoms in a pool, never seen any older than 3 or 4. There is nothing wrong with a 7 year old wearing just bikini bottoms but it would be unusual not to wear a top in the UK. It must be more common in other countries. Not a big deal either way really and not much point in getting upset about it.

Well kids can swim unaccompanied from from 8 at our local pool so not necessarily.
As long as it was done sensitively as in 'sorry everyone has to wear bikini tops - even kids' rather than 'arghhhh cover up those breasts at once' then I really don't see the problem.

YABU. She's not a baby now. What f tomorrow a 10 year old decides she isn't wearing the bottoms of her bikini? Why is that different if a child is not developed? Pools are not the place for nudity. Of curse a bikini is fine...but both halves.

Report
festi · 15/08/2011 22:59

that is a silly argument, bottoms have hyginic and an appropriate modesty aspect in a swimming pool.

Kladdkaka · 15/08/2011 23:00

Why aren't pools the place for nudity? Why don't boys have to cover their top half too? Or men? Good for the goose and that......

Report
MightyQuim · 15/08/2011 23:01

Because there's never going to be borderline cases as to whether boys need to cover their top halves.

Report
MillyR · 15/08/2011 23:01

MQ - that makes sense.

MRD - it clearly is about development and not nudity, otherwise boys and men would all be required to wear a one piece/tankini in a pool.

Hygene? A sliver of fabric isnt changing anything if a child wees or worse inthe pool. Modesty? What modesty? It's only a childs body...not developed as everyone's saying about the top half....what would the difference be?

Report
meditrina · 15/08/2011 23:01

MillyR - I think from OP it's a matter for staff as the parents are not present.

Report
Kladdkaka · 15/08/2011 23:02

Why does there have to be a borderline for girls?

Report
MumblingRagDoll · 15/08/2011 23:04

Milly but if a child has no breasts then they have nothing down there either. Basic. Look...I don't think a child should be in there at seven in only bottoms...because of the reasons manicinsomniac gave....it could cause borderline cases....I'm just pointing out that really...they're not developed anywhere at that age are they....but if child A can wear no top because she has no breasts yet...thenwhy can't child B wear no bottoms because there's nothing there to see either is there?

Kladdakaka it has often annoyed me that boys and men can go topless....because there's nothing there....but women have to hide it all.

Madam yes...and in our pool, I keep seeing fat Dads whose swimmers don't fit...so you get an eyeful of their hairy crack. I almost complained the other day...I could see almost the entire arse of one man. [boak]

There is a girl of about 7 that has swimming lessons in a micro bikini. It's foul. It only just covers her nipples and has little fabric on the bottom half. Just nasty IMO.

Today though, I saw the worst thing ever! a baby of less than 6 months old in a bikini top. Just no!!! so wrong.
