AIBU?

7yo dd was told at swimming pool to wear the top part of her bikini

I sent the kids to a holiday club today where they have a pool. They were wearing the bottom part of a bikini and the 7yo (very skinny as well) was told to wear the top part of her bikini tomorrow. I think that's just weird and I'm feeling a bit upset about it. AIBU?

Just pointing out that this is a zombie thread (it was started in 2011!) which has been dragged back into Active Conversations by a troll poster. We're going to suspend posting on it for a while so it fades back where it belongs... Smile

@BrookeVapes why did you resuscitate a 8 yr old zombie thread, and how do you actually do it??!

Bikini on a 7 year old .why
Why would you only give her half of the bikini ..good job you gave her the pants bit ,would you of still let her go in the pool in just the top part and no knickers

I think a bikini for a 7 year old is fine. I also think she should wear the top half.

What Quim said. It makes me wonder what on earth the people were googling to make such an old thread come up.

It's all annoying too as people dont seem to realise they're replying to an OP who possibly hasn't been on here for years.

How do people even come across 8yo threads like this in order to bump them? Confused I can understand it if it's a niche health issue or something and you want to tap into collective wisdom, and bump the thread for more advice, but cases like this are just baffling.

Well it’s not really a bikini if you’re just wearing the bottom half?

Not sure why you wouldn’t just put the whole set on her?

I think that a Bikini is a bit more of an older persons swimwear if I am honest

I remember having a blue one as a kid, and bloody well hated it, and wished my mother had brought me a swimming suit like everyone else - but when you are a kid, you get what your parents want you to have

FGS, that's a ridiculous, prudish fuss to make over a 7 year old. What is there that needs covering up?

In much of Europe it's very common for very young girls to wear just bikini bottoms at beach or pool. And they're often sold as such - just the bottoms. Personally I think 2 piece bikinis are ridiculous for little girls.

I had a bikini in the 1970s and I loved it. I only ever wore the bottoms (never the top) - I only once got told to put the top on, by a girl about the same age as I was, and I told her where to stick that idea! It's odd my view has now shifted - now there seems to be something sexualised about girls in bikinis (and I haven't allowed my dds to have bikinis yet). Sad because I loved the freedom of running around topless as a kid.

LOL!

No-one reads other peoples' posts do they?

More than one has pointed out this ZOMBIE thread is 8 YEARS OLD!

Child in question is now 15!

What on earth is wrong with a 7 year old in a bikini??
My DD always wore a bikini from being out of nappies, as do my DGD's

I don't know why your DD was asked to cover up OP, is it in the UK?

My daughter had one of those sports-style-topped bikinis, that is, without cups, not shaped around the breast area, when she was about seven. She was a bit of a tomboy but chose it herself. She looked exactly like a prepubescent small girl in it. It was in no way sexualised with its fish pattern. I cannot understand the horror.

Of course you can wear a bikini at 7 if your DD is comfortable with it... stop sexualising young girls! It’s not ok.

Tbh tho OP, in a pool I would make my DD wear the top. In the sea I think it’s fine.

So according to posters here.... A young girl covering her non-existent breasts with a bikini top is not OK, covering them with a slightly longer bikini top which also covers her tummy is OK, and covering them with the top half of a one-piece swim suit is also OK. But having her chest uncovered is not OK.

The same people who think bikinis on prepubescent girls is sexualising them are also saying they should be covering their non sexual chests.... 😂

In any normal brain a7 year old is completely non-sexual. If she is happy wearing just pants or shorts like a boy, fine, if she wants to wear a one or two piece costume because she thinks it looks pretty or wants to wear something like mummy's costume, also fine. The shape or design of tiny bits of material makes no difference to how sexual her outfit is....

Some people need to get a grip.

Mumsnet is really funny about bikinis on girls. My daughter has always worn one, sometimes just the bottoms. On the beach it is far more comfy than a one piece and having a wet cossy on all day.

I don't really get all the pearl-clutching about a 7 year old having a bikini. Sure, we adults know you have two pieces so you can cover your boobs, but I would think a 7 year old just thinks it's a piece of clothing. Children's clothing often copies adult clothing, doesn't it? Like when you have pockets in stuff for toddlers who have no earthly use for it.

I want an actual explanation of this phenomenon for once:

@BrookeVapes, why on earth did you come across an 8-year-old thread on bikinis in the first place?

And then, why the heck did you feel the need to comment on it?! Did you somehow fucking forget you searched for it?!?!

Incidentally, the give away for me was worraliberty’s handle on page one! She uses capital letters in it now, but didn’t back then.

What's wrong with a bikini ?? They're far more practical for going to the toilet and getting changed etc. And ' bikini' can mean any amount of coverage.........I doubt the op is sending her kid out in glorified G-string. Hmm

I’m Swedish but have lived in the UK for well 20 years and I still don’t understand why a little girl has to cover her non- existing breasts? Just fight it with all you got OP. She’s just a little child!
