I consider myself an active proponent of equality of opportunity and a stern critic of discrimination... and yet I find that I can't identify with many of the viewpoints I encounter on the MN feminism page (and often say so). AIBU?

and some people actually make it very clear that they don't even understand what feminism is all about

it's very easy to attack something you don't understand

it does kinda highlight your ignorance when you do that though

Maryz, I know that I've often disagreed with posters over issues, especially as being the parent of a teenage boy, I have a different opinion on some emotive topics. But I think arguing about it, up to a point, is important.
So I keep wading in.

Bonnie, most feminists would concur with the latter part of your post, I think.

I've never met a 'frother'. Maybe I need to get out more...

I know how much feminism is needed when I walk through my city centre and see police tape, a man behind me tells me a young girl was violently raped two nights ago at 2am. He said "What does she expect walking alone at that time of night, she deserved it" Shock

But there are awful people in every group, feminists are no exception and some do have ideas that can be associated with misandry....sorry but it's true.

AnyFucker, let's just say Jenny has quite a public feud going on with at least one member of Feminism.

Freudian, I'm quite lucky. My best (male) friend was raised by a feminist mother, and actually believes feminism is a good thing. The more people that think like that, the better, I say.

Pag, every movement has a capital and anti capital, bit like superheros and villians, why not Eastbourne eh!

Well, not wishing to give all our 'secrets' away, we have been known to discuss whether high heels are a symbol of oppression or are just fabulous (I tend to the latter) along with the heart breaking and infuriating...

I have never met a frother either.
Perhaps one has to mix in certain circles but to say a lot of feminists and then list some pretty extreme views seems very odd

Claw3, it's not about the "type". We're all different shades of feminist over there And that's the way we like it.

Pagwatch · 15/08/2011 12:26

Yes. Eastbourne should embrace it. It could be the land of mandigans and hurrumphing.

'we have been known to discuss whether high heels are a symbol of oppression or are just fabulous (I tend to the latter)'

I disagree completely, they are the western equivalent of footbinding and are definitly instruments of compression and torture.

some people "froth" quite a lot when confronted with ideas that make them uncomfortable, and upset their fragile status quo

they would never admit that though, and would rather make sweeping generalisations about issues they are actually completely uneducated on

"A lot of feminists are mouth frothing man-hating loonies. I think that's where the reluctance to be labelled as a feminist comes from. Most women I know actually like men, don't believe that all sex is rape, and don't suffer an attack of palpitations if a man opens a door for us or calls us "darling" or something."

Right. Here is something concrete. Will anyone who agrees with this post please give examples, drawn from reality, not from the Daily Mail or Viz, of mouth frothing man hating loonies, women who hate men and think all sex is rape (apart from some separatists who as far as I know don't post onnhere)and who suffer palpitations if a door is held open for them?

I don't know. I am uneducated.
I have never frothed. Most inelegant.
