I consider myself an active proponent of equality of opportunity and a stern critic of discrimination... and yet I find that I can't identify with many of the viewpoints I encounter on the MN feminism page (and often say so). AIBU?

Slightest hint of misandry on the feminist boards, and it usually gets battered down

Misandry of course being defined as flaying alive. Anything less than that is seen as due process :o

I just don't go near the Feminist section.

To paraphrase Caitlin Moran:

Do you have a vagina and do you want to control what happens to it? If so, you are a feminist...

I can't remember the exact quote but that summed it up nicely for me.

BelleDameSansMerci · 15/08/2011 11:44

Oh, but YANBU.

DontCallMePeanut · 15/08/2011 11:45

AIBU for not agreeing with the misogynists forum?

What do you mean Style and Beauty doesn't count...

Pagwatch · 15/08/2011 11:45

Back from holiday. 3 weeks away and the 'mn feminists are weird' thing is still going. seeker is still trying to be reasonable. Tethers is still a git and fellationelson is flirting with rebellion and failing.

Nothing changes.

Have I missed nothing?

PerryCombover · 15/08/2011 11:46

You are not being unreasonable to disagree with anyone on any of the boards as you are entitled to your own opinion

sparky680 · 15/08/2011 11:47

can you get underclass chicken keepers Saf?
or is this aibu?

BelleDameSansMerci · 15/08/2011 11:47

I agree with Pag Grin

Nice holiday?

AnyFucker · 15/08/2011 11:47

I do wonder why people come on to threads like this to regale us with their thoughts on a whole section of MN that they have hidden or never go anywhere near

how strange

FreudianSlipper · 15/08/2011 11:48

i would worry of all feminists agreed with each other on every subject. feminism celebrates women being able to have an opinion that they can voice, their own opinion not one that is dictated to them by anyone

Pagwatch · 15/08/2011 11:48

Arf at turkeyz

BelleDameSansMerci · 15/08/2011 11:49

Does being a 'stern' critic involve peering over your glasses at people?

DontCallMePeanut · 15/08/2011 11:50

Well put, Freudianslipper

Pagwatch · 15/08/2011 11:50

Lovely Belle, thank you

Smile
sparky680 · 15/08/2011 11:51

lol at Belle

DontCallMePeanut · 15/08/2011 11:52

BelleDame, yes, it usually involves little "hmm"s and "tut"s... Occassional shaking of head, too. Grin

BBQFrenzy · 15/08/2011 11:54

snarf @ SAF

I change name all the time (all depends on whether its BBQ season or not obviously) and post on the feminist boards pretty frequently under my various incarnations and haven't been flamed/talked over/talked past once. And I don't consider my feminist credentials to be up to much but never had a poster tell me that.

I understand Feminism to be a political movement so I'm not sure why people think this is any different to rocking up to the Conservatives/Labour/anti-racism forum and then throwing their toys out of the pram because the rest of the posters don't agree with their views. Denotes a certain point of view from the OP, which is well, less than open-minded. I do notice a lot of posters on the Feminism section coming on to tell us no women you are doing it all wrong! This is how you want to be doing feminism/this is what feminism is! Which if they have not been around posting and debating on the wide variety of issues that are discussed is a bit high-handed and superior to say the least. And then when no one agrees feminism is declared a clique and sexist blah blah blah.

Whatmeworry · 15/08/2011 11:55

So long as it is the right opinion of course......I do think the MN Feminist boards should have a "Here there be Dragons" sign :o

Claw3 · 15/08/2011 11:55

I just had a quick look on the feminist section and i have to say there was nothing that made me want to jump in and disagree with. Perhaps im not stern enough.

ragged · 15/08/2011 11:55

I go along with the Borg-like Identity analogy.
YANBU, OP.

DontCallMePeanut · 15/08/2011 11:58

I'm now trying to work out who the hell BBQFrenzy is... you're not Jamez, are you Grin Seriously, I SHOULD know this...

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 15/08/2011 11:59

'.I do think the MN Feminist boards should have a "Here there be Dragons" sign'

That is more appropriate than you may realise WmW.
'Here be dragons' on a map was also warning that the explorer would be straying into new, unknown territory with fresh challenges that they should be prepared to face or turn back.
I often have a woffle on the feminist boards, often don't agree, or agree with reservations and no one has ever gone beyond the boundaries of lively debate and challenge.
If it's not for you, then fine. Sit on Eastbourne pier with your fish and chips, muttering 'It looks a bit rough out there...' Smile

FreudianSlipper · 15/08/2011 12:00

hilarious and oh so original whatmeworry Hmm

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 15/08/2011 12:01

'I just had a quick look on the feminist section and i have to say there was nothing that made me want to jump in and disagree with. Perhaps im not stern enough.'

Well, to be fair most of the regulars seem to be at a feminist weekend, or recovering from same, so perhaps you are not seeing it quite at its best.
