I consider myself an active proponent of equality of opportunity and a stern critic of discrimination... and yet I find that I can't identify with many of the viewpoints I encounter on the MN feminism page (and often say so). AIBU?

Ohmigawd. A classic case of chronic attention seeking, this poster.

seeker · 15/08/2011 11:10

I am constantly fascinated by people whonsay stuff like the OP. Andthe people who say the feminist boards make them angry. I often ask for examples, but I never get them. I think it's idea of feminists they don't like. I think they have an uneasy feeling inn the back of their minds that they have attitudes and that wouldn't stand up to scrutiny using "feminist glasses" so they get angry first so they don't have to think bout it.

BBQFrenzy · 15/08/2011 11:14

Well tell us a bit about your beliefs as a feminist then Jenny? You seem to want to see if people outside the feminist board agree with you but that's a bit hard when we don't know what your views are.

What does being an active proponent of equality of opportunity look like? Equality of opportunity is a very specific phrase (when used legally) and would preclude any form of affirmative action for example. Active implies you get out there and do stuff to ensure equality of opportunity for all - what kind of stuff do you do?

Claw3 · 15/08/2011 11:16

You are being a bit vague OP.

Are you saying you are anti feminist? or the MN feminist's (i didnt realise they were a group) are a bit extreme on ALL their views?

I dont get it.

DontCallMePeanut · 15/08/2011 11:19

YABU if you think all the MN feminists are exact replicas, churned out of the Germaine Greer Mass Production Factory... Grin

Seriously. We disagree on most things on there. There are exceptions to this rule.

Hell, even those of us who agree most of the time will find subject we ultimately disagree on.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 15/08/2011 11:21

I don't see how anyone can disagree with MN feminists, as if they're some homogenous group Confused

Having said that I never visit the feminist boards - and I absolutely am a feminist. When I have visited them I got irritated by what I saw as the misuse of "misogynistic" - imo all misogyny is sexist, but not all sexism is misogynistic. I don't know why it irritated me so much.

I might be being unfair however - I only stopped by a few times.

meditrina · 15/08/2011 11:21

The feminist forum does act as a claque from time to time, and I find it easily the least friendly (and therefore least persuasive) part of MN. I think this is a pity, as it does tend to stifle debate for the simple reason that it (appears to) have led many to hide it and some to swerve it.

I don't agree with the dog lovers on The Dog House.

They are devastated by this, obviously.

The typical MN feminist party line seens to be of the Harriet Harman persuasion - ie...

  • Basically, most men are twats.
  • I am right and you are wrong and if you say otherwise I and all my feminist mates on mumsnet will call you nasty names until you scurry off.
  • We dont want equality, we want inequality (in favour of women, obviously) via positive discrimination and all those other, silly bits of legislation Harman rushed through before labour got voted out.
Claw3 · 15/08/2011 11:27

To be honest ive never looked on the feminist page, is there a particular topic on there that you are trying to drum up support for, hence you posting here, so we all go over to be nosey?

SiamoFottuti · 15/08/2011 11:27

You don't agree with every random on the internet on a particular thing? Shocker. I've never heard of such a thing. YABU.

Hmm
seeker · 15/08/2011 11:29

Ok, OP. Give me one thing you don't agree with. Something someone's actually said.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 15/08/2011 11:31

Everyone loves the chicken keepers, swallowed. It's the law.

Pagwatch · 15/08/2011 11:33

I rarely agree with the short haul holiday fuckers. Or tethers.
Complete gits.

Birdsgottafly · 15/08/2011 11:33

OP have you found that those on the feminist board have refused to get into a discussion with you.
Or that your point has been ignored completely and the regulars have discussed around you, to prove their point. All without ever answering a question put by you? And to do that they have also ignored any non regulars who have agreed with you. So you have had two debates within a thread happening?

Tbh, i have and if that is the case then i agree with you, it is a closed shop, just ignore the section and turn it into an AIBU, here.

DontCallMePeanut · 15/08/2011 11:34

BS, didyouseewhatshedid.

Slightest hint of misandry on the feminist boards, and it usually gets battered down. We don't believe "most men are twats". At all. Nor do we want superiority to men. Hmm

VelvetSnow · 15/08/2011 11:34

The feminist topic is the only topic I have hidden.

I may well agree with you OP, but I wouldn't start a thread like this tbh.

didyouseewhatshedid · 15/08/2011 11:37

Yeh, right, DCMP.

ThePosieParker · 15/08/2011 11:39

Feminism as a movement is not the be all and end all of the MN feminist section, they are humans first and therefore have skewed ideas like everyone else.
