To call DD's vagina her vagina?

I don't think I am but this has now caused hell to the point where my 93 year old Grandmothet has refused to see me, my Bampi is yelling at me and everyone is up in arms.

Apparently it's a sexual term, not one to be used by little girls and I'm a bad mother. It's got to the point where my nosy grandma tried to find in laws in the phone book to complain to them about their horrible son using the word to his daughter "Get your hands off your vagina" after she was messing around.

What exactly is wrong with a three year old knowing her vagina is called just that. I'm not going to make up names for it.

Also, if DD uses this term in nursery Bampi seems to think I'll be called in for a meeting and asked not to return.

Yes, I mean vulva but I thought vulva, labia majora, labia minora etc would be a little difficult to comprehend. Mind you 'twinkie' is the favourite in our family. Like the delicious American treat.

Your family are very odd. I'd see their point if you were encouraging her to call it her c-word, but vagina is just an anatomical term, like nose or liver.

I think a lot of people make up names for the whole area, rather than the orifice itself, as it makes it easier to talk about. Growler is my personal favourite!

YANBU. It is far better term than twinke, front bottom or whatever other twee name your family would prefer.

Anything other than a technical term for anything in that region. Twinkie or twinkle have been tossed about (and quickly tossed aside).

vagina/vulva just describe part of the body.

No, not trying to shock people at all, I just think that if you say a nose is a nose and an arm is an arm that your vulva shouldn't have to be substituted for another word like it's something to be ashamed of.

You wouldn't tell her a tree is called a trippy tree leafey leafy. It's a TREE. Why make up a word for a part of her anatomy?

I actially have been talking about her vagina. She pulls apart her labia and has a look etc. that's what we mean by get off it.

She says the whole area including her vulva is her vagina and I've not corrected her as in while wiping etc.

I think you all sound a bit bonkers for it to be such an issue and for you to have posted, to be honest...

YANBU. IMO it's no different to calling sheep 'baa lambs' or cows 'moo cows'. It's cute for a while then suddenly the poor confused child gets told to call things by their proper name. Although I am bit pendantic about calling a spade a spade... :)

everlong is right to be fair. Why should a little girl be taught the name for something? I've taken it to the next level. DD has Reachy Grab Grabs ( arms) and KissyMcLickers (her mouth). I don't want her knowing the correct names for things, otherwise she might, you know, name things and where would we be then?
