to go out to communal garden and leave baby in flat?

Name changed as I'm not sure if this will leave me in line for a flaming.

I live in a small block of flats. Communal garden at back. WIBU to go out into garden with baby monitor while baby is asleep in the evening? She is a good sleeper. Flat is very secure, fire alarms fitted.

Wondering what the general consensus is here? I will listen to mumsnet opinion.

You would go out into your back garden, so how is this any different. You have a baby monitor with you, so its fine.

Imperial - the flats look out onto the garden, so yes people can see in, not sure how that is relevant.

I live on the 2nd floor

You know fine well that there is a massive problem with eagles swooping in through open doors/windows (even if you're just opening the door to leave the house) to snatch babies up with their huge talons. Apparently they use them to line their nests because they are all snuggly and cute. Why would you expose your baby to such horrors? WHY?! Do you WANT an eagle-baby?

NB: YANBU. Other opinions may differ.

why not. How old is the baby? I think it's fine but there are some crazies who won't even leave a baby upstairs asleep while they do the washing up!

No because you are on second floor so presumably a bit of an effort to get back upstairs quickly, and because people will know baby is unattended.

Not sure that is a question a bunch of strangers can answer , what is your gut feeling , knowing the area , your child , distance of flat to garden etc etc

I would. I go into my garden, sometimes having forgotten to lock front door. surely that makes me at more risk of baby snatching than you curiouskitten??

Now, my question, we live in detached house in village 4 miles from city. DD's wondow opens onto a flat roof. I don't dare leave it open at night, even in the heat, in case of baby snatchers. It's a doddle to get in and out of- we climb out of it to sweep moss off flat roof etc. Def weak point of house re: breaking in. Would you leave it open at night???? I kind of thikn if anyone wwere to come in- a burglar i mean- they wouldn't snatch the baby anyway, and how likely is the whole scenario??
Any ideas?

It's a small block so can get to baby very quickly if need be. She is 10 months old, sleeps through the night.

I would, say you live in a town house two flights up to babys bedroom from garden, no different.

my db lives in a cottage that has been extensivly renovated, and i left dd in the attick room, three flights up at very back of house whilst we sat out in the front garden. probably more rooms and floors to get through to get to dd than you have and I never thought twice about it.

lilyloo I was wondering if there was a hazard I was not aware of that someone might point out... if the only hazard is nosy neighbours then I am fine with that (and mine aren't particularly nosy!)

Agree with Lilyloo - sounds ok to me but depends on many factors, so go with your gut feeling. It's not much different from your own garden unless it genuinely takes ages to get upstairs and into your flat. I do hope your neighbours wouldn't judge you for it - nosy blighters!

Isn't this exactly why baby monitors were invented?

dreamfeeder I grew up in a house with a flat roof right outside my bedroom. I was never allowed to sleep with it open, my mother went ballistic if she came in and found that it was. :)

no dreamfeeder I would not. Im sure anyone breaking in would not be there for snatching baby purpuses and would probably bypass baby for the jewels, but I wouldnt want to take that risk without thinking about putting an alarm or something on the window. you can buy a sensor alarm to fit to the window though, they just stick on and are relativly cheep.

If you lived in a town house with three floors and a large 100 foot garden - would this situation be very different? I doubt if I lived in a house with three floors and the baby slept in the attic I would stop and think about whether I went in my own garden at night - I would just go and sit in the garden.

When I used to stay at my mums I left the baby at the front of the house and went and sat in the garden, it wasn't as if I could have heard the baby crying ( I used a monitor) with the door open and mum rarely locked the front door

What you need to consider is the following:

  1. How long will it take you to get to the baby.
  2. What if you have left your keys on the inside.....

I was on the roofterrace two floors up from my son, when I heard him fall out of his bed and on to the floor.... He had woken up and climbed....
I was fealing REALLY guilty. He fell down on a carpeted concrete floor, so still quite hard.

Can't you put a window lock on dreamfeeder so you can open the window a little to get some air but so it can't be completely opened?
