3 showers a week, AIBU to think this is a bit gross?

YABU. Lots of people don't have showers in their house. We don't. I have a bath a couple of times a week and a good wash down if weather is hot or have been exercising.
Showers are relatively new - did everyone years ago stink?
Interesting that many people talk of daily showers and in the same breath talk of dry/sensitive skin.

vividgingerchilli · 23/07/2011 21:03

I just assumed that everybody would have a shower every day, we all do. How else would you wash? Wash basins are for hand washing and teeth cleaning only.

IloveJudgeJudy · 23/07/2011 21:05

I can't believe the number of people on here who say that we only used to bath once a week and we didn't smell. Of course we did! It's much nicer now when everyone can have a quick shower every day. I cannot really believe that so many people do not. I sometimes have trouble getting one of my DC to have a shower every single day, but DH, the other two DC and I always have a shower every single day, no matter what. It's quicker than having a pits/face/undercarriage thing, too.

Those of you who say you don't smell if you only shower three times a week - are you sure?

PumpkinBones · 23/07/2011 21:05

I shower and wash my hair every morning.
I get warm very easily, sweat a lot, and am generally quite clammy (I sound SO attractive!) I don't feel clean without a daily shower, and my hair which is dark and actually quite fine looks visibly in need of a wash after a break of a day. I sometimes don't wash it on a Saturday, but I still shower. My DS's are 5 and 1, and I don't bath them every day, probably 3/4 times a week.

namechange100 · 23/07/2011 21:06

Daily showers/bathing scrubbing is more to do about knowing you are 'just clean' than being hygenically clean.

icooksocks · 23/07/2011 21:11

I shower every other day. Unless its muggy out and then its every day. I dont smell. I wash my bits and pits regularly. I agree with AF with regards to washing after sex. It has to be done.

emsyj · 23/07/2011 21:19

I'm sure most people who smell genuinely believe that they don't...

namechange100 · 23/07/2011 21:24

Ilove I bath three/four times a week but I WASH IN BETWEEN so I dont smell

and to all the other posters it is a faff but we dont ALL HAVE SHOWERS, bahts every day before school run are not practical.

namechange100 · 23/07/2011 21:26

emsyj my nose works fine, I can smell whether I smell or not

Karstan · 23/07/2011 21:29

I reckon in day to day life of all the people I meet/pass/see less than 5% are smelly. A quick glance at this thread suggests more than 5% do not shower everyday. Therefore there must be plenty in that group who do not shower everyday and do not smell noticeably unpleasant to other people.

I get that some people are probably totally unaware they stink but I don't think that everyone who doesn't shower/bathe daily falls into this category.

Sirzy · 23/07/2011 21:33

I shower every other day, have a good wash down on the other days. If the weather is really hot then I will shower daily, or even twice daily.

emsyj · 23/07/2011 21:37

I haven't suggested that anyone in particular does smell, namechange100 - I have no idea whether you smell or not. But generally you can't smell yourself.

Do you think that all (or even most) people who are whiffy can smell it but think, 'ah who cares'? I don't. I think they can't smell themselves. Just like people who have a dog think their house doesn't smell of dog. They're used to it. They love the dog and the smell is normal to them. Same with cats I suppose. To me, my house smells fragrant and lovely - but to an animal-hater it probably smells like the zoo.

emsyj · 23/07/2011 21:39

I am not saying at all that everybody who doesn't shower every day stinks by the way Karstan, sorry if I gave that impression. Just that saying, 'it's fine to shower once a month because I don't smell' is a bit deluded, as most people who smell IMO probably aren't aware of it.

tethersend · 23/07/2011 21:39

There. That'll do.

namechange100 · 23/07/2011 21:42

No emsyj I am used to be clean and smelling of soap and deodrant, so if its been a hot day and I check under my arms, I CAN smell if I am fresh or not and act upon it if need be.

I agree about the dog thing, its awful I nearly puked in someones house with such a strong smell, but ive also lived for a year in a house with a dog so it somes down to washing and cleaning again of dogs and houses!

I know my hair smells today as I cooked egg bread this am and havnt washed it but we've stayed in all day.

Karstan · 23/07/2011 21:43

It sounded like what you were saying is that anybody who doesn't shower daily would smell they just wouldn't know it. I haven't seen anybody trying to claim they only shower once a month and still don't smell!

I can smell when I'm smelly, I've been to enough festivals in my life to test this Smile

namechange100 · 23/07/2011 21:46

well put Kartsan the figures speaketh for themselves, maybe some MNetters whove been to meet ups would like to comment Grin

I shall wash my hair tomorrow, I fear Emsyj might start to smell my eggybreadness Grin

emsyj · 23/07/2011 21:47

I have a good friend who has to be virtually forced into the shower by her husband - she doesn't smell, but I do think she is a bit gross. She just isn't one of those people who feels icky if she hasn't had a shower.

LRDTheFeministNutcase · 23/07/2011 21:49
