thanks foofy. I reckon the baby might put a stop to my ablutions for a bit but I am going to try my best :)

FriggFRIGG · 23/07/2011 18:45

i would LOVE to just have a quick shower everyday....
but our shower is just one of those old over the bath styley ones, you have to hold it over your head....pain in the arse, and its broken so the head sprays water in ALL directions, normally soaking the baby and toddler who accompany me.
so i only fight with the shower 3-4 times a week, and i bathe in the evening 1-2 times a week.i wash in between these times though...i hope i dont smell

Fooffy · 23/07/2011 18:46

Ladyintheradiator If you read Catgirls post from earlier she has quite a full on hygiene routine. A small baby doesn't stop you showering, nobody said it did. A small baby might hamper a morning shower plus evening bath plus shaving and exfoliating for a while.

FriggFRIGG · 23/07/2011 18:47

oh yes anyf i always shower after sex,i couldnt not.

nooka · 23/07/2011 18:49

I shower/wash my hair every other day and take baths when I want to relax or for period pain. If I shower too often my skin gets very dry and itchy. It's not actually very good for your skin to be washed too often, and apparently hair should really be left alone for the healthiest look.

With growing water shortages I wonder if the current fad for showering so frequently is likely to pass. When I was growing up most people didn't have showers (I'm not sure when they became standard bathroom fixtures) and often had a weekly bath/hair wash. I don't recall anyone being particularly smelly. I'm now more likely to notice people with excessive perfume and BO, and I think the latter is generally more likely to be diet than washing related.

GrottyPotPlant · 23/07/2011 18:50

Hmm, I'm a bit grossed out by all this twice daily washing business. Water is not infinite! And besides, it interferes with your skin's ability to protect itself, if you are constantly soaping it down, no?

I'm a twice-a-weeker, albeit paranoid-ly (constantly checking with my nearest and dearest in case I've gone stinky. Doesn't seem to have happened yet...)

I'm in the YABU camp, it's not a numbers game, it's a smell/no smell game.

And the periods thing, for heaven's sake! Are we supposed to be sitting in the unclean hut for the duration again??

frigg, I bet you do not smell

and I have to say, my washing/showering after sex thing may actually translate to the morning after Smile

I don't jump in the shower at 2am, for example

MindtheGappp · 23/07/2011 18:55

No, three times a week is perfectly hygienic

sleepindogz · 23/07/2011 18:56

yawn not this chestnut again

ok OP, just for you

showers are a relatively new fad in this country. Not too long ago it was commonplace for families to have one bath a week, sharing the water.

OK, happy now

Ephiny · 23/07/2011 19:00

I do think some people are too obsessive about showering all the time - I have quick a daily shower as a general rule because I feel fresher that way (and it helps wake me up in the morning!), but occasionally don't bother if it's a day when I'm just at home studying or something, especially in winter.

But in the warm weather, doing a manual job, you'd surely get quite sweaty and would start to smell if you didn't wash frequently? I think in that situation three times a week is not really enough.

I would always make sure to shower every day when on my period. I used to have a flatmate who didn't (and used pads) - and you could always tell when it was her TOTM by the smell Hmm.

ChristinedePizan · 23/07/2011 19:00

I shower every other day. I have horribly dry skin and it takes forever to moisturise afterwards. I have a tart's wash every day (face/pits/undercarriage)

I shower every other day after I've been running. I have a thorough wash on the days inbetween. I'm pretty sure I don't smell. I too have dry, sensitive skin which needs moisturising after a shower, so can take a while.
To be fair, I USED to shower every day before DC, but there's just too much to do now in the mornings.
Anyway, the point I'm making is that it isn't gross not to shower every day but you need to clean yourself thoroughly on the days when you don't.

Spuddybean · 23/07/2011 19:10

i dont think you need to shower everyday, every other day maybe. If it wasn't for washing my hair every day i wouldn't.

If i'm not working i shower/bath every other day. I also have never used deodorant even when i go to the gym (sounds minging i know - but i have never smelled, and i have asked people, just in case!).

Some people sweat more than others maybe i'm just one of those lazy people who don't.

So imo depends on the person.

mousymouse · 23/07/2011 19:11

I always love these threads.
amazing what range of washing is deemed acceptable (or not).
:o

Solo · 23/07/2011 19:13

FriggFRIGG you can get a decent(ish) new shower head from the £ shop.

I shower in two minutes almost every day. I have plumbing and electrics problems which is why it's only almost every day and not every day... when new electric shower fitted, I will be much happier because I'll take a 3 minute shower!!!!
Don't have sex, so no worries there and use a Mooncup when my body decides to have a period and not pretend to be old and menopausal Grin

LineRunner · 23/07/2011 19:13

The OP asked about someone. Someone in her life.

Solo · 23/07/2011 19:16

Spuddybean My Dad never ever used deo or antiperpirant and nor did Dd's father and neither of them smelled, but they both showered or bathed daily.

Mandy2003 · 23/07/2011 19:17

There's a supermarket worker in my local shop who smells so bad that everyone avoids going down the aisle in which he's working. OP - the supermarket concerned doesn't begin with "M" does it??

Esta3GG · 23/07/2011 19:24

How often people bathe/shower is up to them but really, at the very least, splash a bit of water on your fanny.
Nobody likes a stinky fanny.
And nothing in this world stinks like a stinky fanny does.

LineRunner · 23/07/2011 19:28

"And nothing in this world stinks like a stinky fanny does."

Told that gem to your mother lately, have you, mate?

befuzzled · 23/07/2011 19:30

I think so yes - everyone who I know who says they dont bath or shower daily smells, to varying degrees, even though they say they don't think they do.

AnyFucker · 23/07/2011 19:30

yes, esta

your comment comes across as a bit woman-hating

did you mean it that way ?

vagina's are actually self-cleaning, they weren't really designed to be washed so regularly as we do these days

hence the widespread affliction of thrush

a simple daily wash with water should prevent "stinky fanny", if it doesn't you need to see your GP as you may have an infection
