Comedians in the seventies would tell "jokes" about "me and the wife are getting divorced, we're arguing about the kids: one of us will have to keep them." The structure of the joke is as old as the hills.

FB didn't think "oh wow I have written a fabulous new joke no one has ever heard before!! How people will laugh!!" He dug up an ancient joke and thought up a way to make it totally offensive.

The intention was clearly to offend, not to make people laugh.

Frankie Boyle is a comedian. A hard hitting one admittedly but still just a comedian. Since time began comedians have offended someone. I see no reason to give it any more credence than that.

Maurice, Do you really think boyles joke was so absurd no one could take it seriously? Unfortunately there are plenty of idiots out there who see these kids as unloveable and worthless. A quick search of mumsnets history will prove my point. Have you heard anything the carers on here have told you or do you just not care?

unpa1dcar3r · 02/07/2011 19:57

I think MT is simply determined to flog a dead 'orse meself! He/she has tried to make a stupid point and has lost and is refusing to accept this by harping on about the same old thing; 'it was just a joke, get over it' type thing...

I do wonder though if the prat himself (FB) would do the same for MT. Very much doubt it as he has shown he doesn't care one jot about others, whatever their stance on this.

BakeliteBelle · 02/07/2011 20:01

The fact that many parents of disabled children support Katie Price here, while those who have no experience of disability think she's publicity seeking, speaks volumes.

Go Team Harvey!!!!

BakeliteBelle · 02/07/2011 20:03

Gillg57 are racist jokes ok? Did you like Bernard Manning?

SJisontheway · 02/07/2011 20:03

His persistence on this thread is intriguing. I can understand when posters with a vested interest simply can't let this lie, but how anyone can hold so dear their right to ridicule those less fortunate is baffling.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 02/07/2011 20:37

Spot on, BakeliteBelle .

unpa1dcar3r · 02/07/2011 21:02

That's cos they aint got a frigging clue what they're on about Bake!

I would like to think that even without my experiences of disability that I would still be horrified by this bile, even without understnading the impact such comments have on disabled children and their carers (before I had my boys I worked voluntarily in a special needs school)

However I think there are a small minority who just have no concept and no desire to learn, preferring to remain ignorant and deluded in their assumption that this vile diatribe is acceptable on any level of humanity.

Unfortunately unpa1dcar3r, I don't think they are ignorant and I don't think they have no concept. I think that they just don't care! Possibly because the reality of such things do not affect them or maybe because they don't have the capacity to care.
These people are educated , have access to computors and media , so they are definately not ignorant. They choose to shrug it off like a nasty little mosquito disturbing their peace. They probably will only take notice when they are bitten.

wasuup3000 · 03/07/2011 00:28

I think anyone who feels that they can excuse Frankie Boyle's comments or find them funny in regard to Harvey is rather insane.

I have no opinion on Katies lifestyle because I don't walk in her shoes but I do admire the way she is standing up for what she believes is right.

Society needs to be more "disability" aware, to raise awareness of the bullying that disabled people and their famillies suffer and hopefully Kates documentary will help with this at least a bit.

unpa1dcar3r · 03/07/2011 09:42

You're probably right Fit. I guess I just like to think that there must be excuses for these people. It's hard for me to believe that there really are evil people out there. Well that sounds naive, I know there are evil people out there who rape/muder/pillage etc but I mean like you've described; people who you see everyday, doing their jobs raising their families, appearing 'normal' to all intents and purposes but harbouring this nastiness which says 'mocking the disabled is fine cos it makes me laugh and that's all that matters, sod the consequences, cos I don't care aboiut things which don't affect me'
Like I said before tho; there but for the Grace of God...

It's surprising how many people end up as carers in one way or another or end up being care for. Won't find it at all funny then will they.

Spot on Wassup!

fairydoll · 03/07/2011 10:49

generally sexist or racist jokes I don't mind , if they are funny.Every joke has to have a butt after all.But to make a cruel joke on national television about any individual minor child is completely out or order, and about a disbility even worse.
But worse than FB is C4 who allowed it to be broadcast.Institutional bullying
