.....not a feminist?

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 29/06/2011 23:39

What did she say when you asked her on the thread?

CaptainBizarro · 29/06/2011 23:40

YANBU.

Anyone who does, IMO, either cannot or will not see the bigger picture. It's too inconvenient, or something.

Can't stand understand people who are willing to reap all the hard-won benefits that feminism has won us, and yet reject the ideology.

Honeydragon · 29/06/2011 23:41

UANBU to wonder

UABU to do it at this time of night Grin

I'll be back in the morning to see what the "empowered anti feminists" have to say Wink

tethersend · 29/06/2011 23:41

Becuase, ironically, men don't like feminism.

Although, to be fair, if this is in reference to the thread I think you mean, the OP was very up for debate and questioning her own views which is a fucking rarity.

MrsRhettButler · 29/06/2011 23:41

Well I get slightly confused as to what constitutes a feminist actually.

So i Wouldn't call myself a feminist

My sister, who is a complete bit of an idiot, used to say I don't know anything about feminism except I am not a feminist. She felt being a feminist would confer her to a life of greasy hair and unshaven legs. She is educated to the level of masters degree, what a waste imo. She really pisses me off. YADNBU.

Empusa · 29/06/2011 23:57

There's a whole variety of reasons. Some of them logical, some of them not.

Personally I do identify as feminist, though there are certain conversations which make me want to deny any connection and just use the (probably made up) word Equalist instead. Sometimes it just seems easier to say that as there are less other assumptions/judgements made.

Mowlem · 30/06/2011 00:01

I would never call myself a feminist because I do not believe in fighting for rights for women.

Instead, I would call myself an egalitarian as I do believe in fighting for equality for all - whether that is gender, race, age, sexual preferences....

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 30/06/2011 00:03

I used to define myself as feminist. I used to work for Women's Aid.

I stopped calling myself feminist when radfems on MN told me I couldn't possibly be feminist because I didn't agree with them.

I am, frankly, too old to give a shit about labels.

Tchootnika · 30/06/2011 00:03

Of course YANBU, because it happens all the time.
Wouldn't hesitate to identify myself as a feminist - would be stupid illogical not to...
But I suppose it's understandable that some people see 'feminism' as a discreet 'political ideology', rather than common sense...
I think this attitude is akin to that where people slag off 'human rights'... iyswim...

worraliberty · 30/06/2011 00:05

Oh I hate 'ists' and 'isms' they're all labels.

I'm just me and that's that Grin

Omigawd · 30/06/2011 00:09

Can one be a Moderate Feminist and disagree with Radical Feminists or whatever? Or is that now being non-Feminist?

worraliberty · 30/06/2011 00:11

That's exactly how I feel Omigawd

I feel by labelling myself, I should act a certain way and believe certain things that 'proper feminists' (whatever that means) believe.

I believe in equality and that's good enough for me Grin

GreenEyesandHam · 30/06/2011 00:14

I hate that there actually has to be a label of Feminist. An idea that women were ever considered so inequal to men that there has to be a 'movement'.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 30/06/2011 00:16

By current radfem standards, I am a sex-positive feminist; and, to radfems, there isn't much lower than that.

I loathe that radfems claim to know better than women, how those same women really feel.

No better than "the patriarchy" they claim are so oppressive, imvho.

Tchootnika · 30/06/2011 00:17

An idea that women were ever considered so inequal to men...
Have you ever read any history, GreenEyesandHam?
Do you ever read the papers?
I think you should...

Empusa · 30/06/2011 00:17

"An idea that women were ever considered so inequal to men that there has to be a 'movement'."

Um.. maybe you've phrased that badly.. but women were considered so inequal to men that a movement was needed, still is in fact.

GreenEyesandHam · 30/06/2011 00:17

The idea of 'equality of the sexes' only exists because of feminism Grin

GreenEyesandHam · 30/06/2011 00:18

Hello?

Errr that was my point...

Empusa · 30/06/2011 00:18

Sorry.. what? So if it wasn't for that pesky feminism everything would be just fine?

Tchootnika · 30/06/2011 00:19

Er, yes, GreenEyes....
or should I call you JamesHuff1/2/3?

GreenEyesandHam · 30/06/2011 00:22

Ok, I phrased it badly..

I hate that there actually has to be a label of Feminist. I hate that there is an idea that women were ever considered so inequal to men that there has to be a 'movement'.

worraliberty · 30/06/2011 00:23

To be honest I just switch off to anyone who preaches or who seems to think in a one track way.

I've seen the way a few of the 'hardcore' MN feminists have kicked off on threads about porn for example. Some of them were basically telling women how to think and what to believe and getting quite nasty when they weren't agreed with.

The irony of them trying to brow beat women into agreeing with them...the way many men try to brow beat women into agreeing with them was amazing really!

GreenEyesandHam · 30/06/2011 00:23

Please don't call me James huff Grin
