I am on the organ donor register. I am willing to donate all my organs to those who may need them in the event of my untimely death.

However, if the new system of presumed consent is brought in, I am opting out. I can't explain why I feel like I do about this. Am I being unreasonable?

Since you are voluntarily on the register now, your POV makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. So yes you are being unreasonable, but it isn't unreasonable for people not to want to be the donor register at all (hope they or their families never need a blood transfusion or transplant though).

I have a donor card, my family know about my wishes. but it is a faff for some people. so I really like the presumed consent system.

Yes. Utterly unreasonable. You are willing to do it and have taken the time to register, so you presumably accept that it is important. And yet you are going to withdraw your consent to that important, life-saving thing simply because the legislation surrounding it has changed.

People haven't become less important just because there has been a law change.

If you want to donate organs now, choosing to opt-out for the sake of it, just sounds petty.

Having said that I am a registered donor and wouldn't change it. But not sure I'm happy with 'presumed consent'.

yabu. Having known personally a number of people who had their lives changed by organ donation, and two who died waiting for a donor, I'm all for presumed consent

Apologies for my ignorance, but "presumed consent" does this mean that all organs can and will be used - because we are presuming that the deceased would've consented anyway....

If this is the case, why change your mind - surely the end result is the same?

Yes YABU and this is why.
Under the old system you opted in so anyone who carried a donor card could if they wanted be smug about it, 'look I want to help others so I have joined the donor scheme'
Under the new system everyone is opted in so it is now a case of I have to help people after my death and you can't carry off the smugness anymore.

But with the system we have now we are presuming that people wouldn't want to donate their organs when the vast majority of people who aren't on the register probably just haven't been bothered. There is a shortage of organs so I am all for a new system where if you feel strongly about it you can opt out and the lazy feckers are presumed in.

Well, if you're happy for people to die because you want to make a point that's fine.

But I hope you've made a legal declaration that you carry with you at all times that neither you nor your children wish to recieve an organ from anyone unless you know for certain that they have given active, rather than presumed consent.
