AIBU?

To treat my daughter the (younger) age she acts?

DD10 tried to sneak the uneaten crusts from her school lunchbox into the rubbish bin without me seeing AGAIN today - she knows full well that I expect food to be eaten, not wasted.

I have told her that the next time I find out it happens - I'll give her a packed lunch suitable for a much younger child; one of an age who I'd accept leaving their crusts.

We've had sulks, stomps and 'it's not fair'.

AIBU? Tbh, it wouldn't bother me if she managed to work out that she can chuck them away at school (I'm guessing that the staff won't let her) but bringing them home and throwing them away infront of me really irks -

yes, yabu

do you always force your child to eat food she dislikes? perhaps that's why she has to sneak and lie to stop you being overly angry at her

Only compostable waste can go in our waste food bin, the rest goes to the gasification plant Wink

Seriously? Is it really worth rowing about? I wouldn't call leaving the crust of a sandwich 'wasting' food as long as she ate the main part of the sandwich.

My 19yr old still doesn't eat crusts.

Cant you trim them off if you don't want her bringing them back in her lunch box?

Give her wholemeal rolls

crusts are not great unless it's fabulous seeded bread

bleugh....the crusts are the wrapping, they are not for eating! Grin

Is it really such a big deal if she leaves the crusts? picking battles and mountains of mole hills come to mind.

I have just done something similar with my thirteen year old foster son this afternoon. I really am struggling to get him to brush his teeth (he tells me has done it, runs tap etc, then doesn't bother) and his breath is smelly, so I have told him he is not getting any treats like sweets, fizzy juice etc for a week until he can prove to me he can be responsible and look after his teeth! he has eleven fillings already in adult teeth so I literally don't know what else to do!

YABU - and a bit of a bully, tbh.

just out of interest... why is it ok for a younger child to leave crusts? and how would their lunch differ from hers?

you could always cut the crusts off and use them to make breadcrumbs... no waste at all then

I'd be more concerned that, by ten, she hasn't learned a better way to hide stuff like this from you if you are as uptight as you sound, tbh.

bogeyface yes, it is the same bread, but it does taste different and has a different texture (quite manky on some pre-packaged bread too)

i presume you eat bones and gristle in your meat? after all, it's the same animal Hmm

if someone doesn't like something then it's pretty nasty to try and force them to eat it

ps- I don't think you are being unreasonable, I encourage my children to eat their crusts too and I was also brought up that way. I don't see what the problem is.

Ooooh! We compost compatible waste and the council collect the remainder of the food waste.

My sincere apologies Grin

(Don't push the crust thing. Re-open discussion about it from a more open viewpoint, allow her views and realign your boundaries to something tenable for both of you. This should negate the need for her lying because for whatever reason, she currently feels there is a need to do so and that's not good Wink)

scarlett - when foster dd came she pretended she knew how to wash/brush her teeth but I wasn't convinced so I showed her and bought her an electric toothbrush (a loud one) that beeps when you've finished.

Maybe you need to show him what to do.
