surely if you fancy women you'd want to go out with a woman that looked like \ woman not a man.
nothing against gay/lesbians at all.

but this seems a bit strange to me

Snorbs · 19/06/2011 23:22

Obvious troll is obvious.

HeadfirstForHalos · 19/06/2011 23:22

But what if you're a straight woman but go for a feminine looking man? What would that mean? He'd still have the meat and two veg? Confused

BertieBotts · 19/06/2011 23:23

Carrie's a regular Confused are you drunk?

SecretNutellaFix · 19/06/2011 23:23

Possibly for the same reason as some women go for effeminate looking men.

Personal preference? Free Will? Choice? Maybe they just like their personality?

iMemoo · 19/06/2011 23:23

She may be a regular but she ain't half talking shite.

AuntiePickleBottom · 19/06/2011 23:24

actually that is a bit of a generalisation just because you sometimes see 2 butch lesbians together. Sometimes you see 2 camp gay guys together, but that doesn't mean that all gays go for guys that ham it up. You really shouldn't generalise like that.

michglas · 19/06/2011 23:26

Meant to say 'just as sometimes you see 2 camp...........works in the same way.

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 19/06/2011 23:26

Yes because ALL lesbians wear dungarees, dm's and have a crew cut! Hmm

Silly billy troublemaker.....put your head back into the Mail on Sunday and let the grown ups talk.

ScaredyDog · 19/06/2011 23:28

Sorry but this is daft. I know a number of gay women and they come in all shapes and sizes, feminine and not so feminine - as all human beings do.

animula · 19/06/2011 23:28

I think there are several possible answers to this. Firstly, what is it to "look like a woman/look like a man"? Some people might say that "looking like a woman" is a social construction: "femininity", and not "real" at all.

"Looking like a man": Some lesbians do go for butch-femme roles, with appearance playing a part in that. But it has to be pointed out that there will be a "femme" in that dyad - so not all the lesbians will be going for butches.

The butch-femme thing was quite "big" in the 1980s/90s and there was a lot of literature on the subject. Some people interpreted it as being about playing with the signifiers of heterosexuality and suexualising their transgression.

But a lot of lesbians don't go for women who look like men, they like women. That's probably the short answer.

hester · 19/06/2011 23:29

Oh lord, so many tempting answers.

OK, taking it at face value: not all lesbians go for 'women who look like men'. Personally, most of my partners have been very feminine and dp is femme extraordinaire. (I am less so, but still: long hair, face full of make-up, nice frock collection.) There are loads of 'feminine' lesbians around - you're probably just not spotting us because you assume we're heterosexual.

Having said which, there is a butch aesthetic which, done well, is very very sexy. A great butch doesn't look like a man: she looks like a great butch. I hate to say it, but I wouldn't expect you to understand Grin

Lastly, has it occurred to you that seeing women who choose not to wear make-up/grow their hair long/wear heels and frocks as 'looking like a man' is quite questionable?

animula · 19/06/2011 23:31

V. true about "butch" looking like a "butch" rather than a chap.

carriedababi · 19/06/2011 23:31

i know alot of gay people as one of my childgood friends is gay, so i know alot of gay people through her, and i don't think you often get 2 gay men together that are both camp, as you say.

there tends to be only one camp one in the realationships thats ive seen
