I love this guy, AIBU?

Sensi - i could be stepping on a mine here... but my grandparents, who are a good bit younger than him but'children of their time', have some silly preconceptions and therefore say silly things but are open to change when they stumble upon people who prove their prejudices wrong - I'm sure PP is the same or he would not work with so many mixed charities worldwide. He says stupid things sometimes but for me his actions speak louder than words

Sensi · 09/06/2011 21:37

No, judgey pants are ok if it's about bigotry.

Dippy001 · 09/06/2011 21:37

YABU, the man is a wanker

Thingumy · 09/06/2011 21:38

Not sure about loyal, lots of whispers of him being a bit of ladies man early in their marriage.

I admire his outspokenness, shame he fucks up sometimes with his prehistoric outdated views.

southeastastra · 09/06/2011 21:39

thought his life story was really sad

people from the commonwealth love him don't they

FreudianSlipper · 09/06/2011 21:40

yes i love nazi sympathisers and racists if they are bully too all the better.

wonder if nick griffin will be seen as a cute old man in his later years with wacky views

he is a tit, an embarrasment that is why he is always been kept in the background

joogle · 09/06/2011 21:41

Is he a nazi sympathiser?

OP posts:
Sensi · 09/06/2011 21:42

I appreciate the fact that he is elderly and therefore has views which belong to another era, but he also has been well educated, is well travelled, well versed in etiquette, has mingled with vast amounts of people from all cultures his whole life and is supposed to be some kind of symbol for this country. So I think the age thing is a poor excuse.

Plus I am really honestly shocked that people are so quick to write off all the dreadful things he has said because there is something a bit loveable about him. I know I sound like the most dreadful po-face, but no matter how nice someone might seem, those views are never acceptable.

GoodnightNobody · 09/06/2011 21:43

BornInAfrica- what's your problem?

If posters disagree with your views is it your thing to make a derogatory comment about them?

Hassled · 09/06/2011 21:44

poor Fiona - he's not a good interviewee, is he? I like him - no bullshit, a strong sense of duty and he works hard.

magicmummy1 · 09/06/2011 21:45

I don't get why people think it's ok to be bigoted over the age of 70. Do these people assume that all older people are bigots? If so, I find that hugely offensive. If not, then surely you can't just dismiss the bigotry on the grounds of age, can you, because the non-bigots are equally part of their era. Confused

I don't like Philip at all, and I fail to see why his gross errors of judgement should be so celebrated.

create · 09/06/2011 21:45

When has Prince Philip ever been shown to be a Nazi sympathiser? He was mentioned in dispatches for his service in WW2.

I remember him getting into terrible trouble for saying some shoddy building work looked like it had been done by Indians. To this day I am convinced he just got his words muddled (as I do often and I'm much younger than him) and meant cowboys.

He says stupid things sometimes, as product of his upbringing, role/status and age, but I've never heard anything nasty.

Bue · 09/06/2011 21:46

God he's difficult. Poor Fiona is right! The 'you've never had a profession' thing was a classic.

Artichokes · 09/06/2011 21:47

He is not a Nazi sympathiser. He was part of an upper class Christian family living in Germany in the 30s and has admitted his family originally admired improvements in services under the Nazi party. He has however also said he is appalled by what was done to the Jews and he fought AGAINST the Nazis in WW2.

DogsBestFriend · 09/06/2011 21:48

He always makes me think of that Jenny Joseph poem, 'When I'm An Old Woman'. He seems to revel in the freedom that age, if not privilige, has given him.

I'm an out and out republican but confess to having something on a car crash fascination with Philip. I know I shouldn't but I just can't help rubbernecking. I rather like the fact that he'll speak his mind regardless that I might not agree with what he says.

joogle · 09/06/2011 21:49

Just because someone isn't PC doesn't make them a nazi mass murder sympathiser!!! FFS get a grip!!!!

OP posts:
excitedLJ · 09/06/2011 21:50

on a more lighthearted note do you consider he possibly does these things at least partially for a reaction coz you would get seriously bored trogging around one crappy function after another coz your mrs has been invited wouldn't you??
might take this approach tomorrow night at DHs work formal dinner....Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 09/06/2011 21:50

Is there any basis in fact to people saying he's a Nazi sympathiser?

DH met him once - he and his team were being presented with an industrial science award. DofE asked the American guy if he would like a translator.

GrimmaTheNome · 09/06/2011 21:53

Got to run but the OP should like this Grin

DogsBestFriend · 09/06/2011 21:53

Damn right I think he does, excited! I dare you to take Phil's approach tomorrow at DHs formal dinner!

And please come back and tell us how it went when you do. :o

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 09/06/2011 21:54

Oh I love him, he has a crumbly old uncle, sat in the corner drunkenly spouting nonsense complete with lopsided paper hat about him.

He's fantastic !!

FakePlasticTrees · 09/06/2011 21:56

I think it's a bit offensive to call someone who as a greek/dane wasn't called up but volunteered to fight for Britian in WW2 a Nazi sympathiser. 2 of his sisters were married to high profile Nazis, which is where this might have come from, but he cut those sisters out of his life (they famously weren't invited to his wedding to the then Princess Elizabeth).

TBH - he seems about as PC as most people his age. Which is not very at all.

There's a rumour going round that he's got cancer and the 2 royal weddings this year are because they have been told if it was left longer than this year it'd be without granddad there...

create · 09/06/2011 21:57

I think you've probably got something there excited and it would be fun to try it at your DH's function. PP's not likely to get his spouse overlooked for that big promotion though is he?!
