I love this guy, AIBU?

primalscream - I am, as you may have noticed, a dyed in the woll republican. And I wouldn't have turned down an invitation to the wedding - in the unlikely event of me recieving one!

diddl · 12/06/2011 11:03

But the wedding was about William & Kate.

Many of us have an embarrassing relative who we had to inviteGrin

Animation · 12/06/2011 11:16

Seeker - Occassionally I come across a thread whereby someone is hell bent on assassinating someone's character - like you are doing in this thread.

Prince Phillip is someone you don't know.

The fact that you persevere with this assassination says something about you. People will draw conclusions about YOUR character.

I wish you would stop this now.

Joggle, Seeker is merely stating her opininon just as the Op did when she wrote that she thought Phillip was great.Tis allowed.

I personally think he is an arsehole.

seeker · 12/06/2011 11:20

Grin at Animation.

He appears to be pretty good at assassinating his own character!

All I want is evidence that he is not how he appears by his public pronouncements. Can you give me any?

diddl · 12/06/2011 11:26

"All I want is evidence that he is not how he appears by his public pronouncements. "

I hope that the fact that the Queen chose him means that he has some redeeming featuresBlush

seeker · 12/06/2011 11:27

Oh, diddl, don;t be silly!

FreudianSlipper · 12/06/2011 11:28

see that is what is so funny animation that many on here are getting upset about someone they do not know and will never know, who coudl not give a shit about any of us and so many are taking it all so personally on his behalf

i think he is a prized cunt why because he has proved to me to be so many times

there are many public figures that are worthy of admiration and are admired for what they have done not who they have married or what family they are born in to. i prefer to keep my admiration for them they deserve it

one day we shall be a republic, not yet and unlikely to be soon but one day :o

Tn0g · 12/06/2011 11:29

Oh feck i put Jogggle, but that is the op feckity feck i can't remember who I meant now.

diddl · 12/06/2011 11:38

I´m not being silly.

I admire the Queen & would be surprised/disappointed if she had chosen an absolute tosser.

seeker · 12/06/2011 11:40

So somebody is a National Treasure and beyond criticism because 60 years ago another National Treasure married him?

Animation · 12/06/2011 11:47

Well he might not be a national treasure but to say he's NEVER done anything useful in his life. That's mean!

diddl · 12/06/2011 11:48

No.

I think that PP comes across really badly.

I hope that there is more to him.

But I for one don´t know.

seeker · 12/06/2011 11:48

Name me 3 useful things he has done in his life then.

frillyflower · 12/06/2011 11:49

Very weird!

I don't know the Queen or PP.

I did meet her in a line up once though. She looked quite grumpy and peed off (fair enough - although she is paid pretty well to do her 'job').

On that basis I think I am qualified to say she is a lovely granny (better than all others), totally admirable and would certainly never have chosen to marry an unpleasant bigot. FFS!

Animation · 12/06/2011 11:53

Name me 3 useful things he has done in his life then.

No - I'm not playing that game!

Primalscream · 12/06/2011 11:59

Seeker, I'm not sure why liking PP annoys you so much - get over it FGS, what is the problem?

I don't get the fuss over Nelson Mandela, but I wouldn't wrestle people to the ground who have an over the top love for him ( conveniently forgetting about his 'dodgy' past ) We all admire and like different people.

accept that and move on.

seeker · 12/06/2011 11:59

Why not? You're the one who said I was being mean by thinking he has never done anything useful. I can;t find any evidence tha the has - so my postion is currently the only logical one to hold. It's up to you to disprove it.

hardcolin · 12/06/2011 12:09

He's great. We won't get another Phillip.

Animation · 12/06/2011 12:14

...because I don't like your "3 useful things" philosophy that determines whether or not an individual has worth or value.

seeker · 12/06/2011 12:38

It's the very least I expect from a public figure living at the tax payer's expense.

And people keep on saying how very ard working he is, and I'm fascinated to find out exactly what he does!

stillfeel18inside · 12/06/2011 12:58

3 things:

  • he's patron of 800 organizations
  • he founded the Duke of Edinburgh award (think that might have done some good stuff for kids...)
  • and I found this on wiki about when he served in the navy (I'm stuck inside bored as you can tell!): After the invasion of Greece by Italy in October 1940, he was transferred from the Indian Ocean to the battleship HMS Valiant in the Mediterranean Fleet.[19] Amongst other engagements, he was involved in the Battle of Crete, was mentioned in despatches for his service during the Battle of Cape Matapan where he controlled the battleship's searchlights. During the invasion of Sicily, in July 1943, as second in command of HMS Wallace, he saved his ship from a night bomber attack. He devised a plan to launch a raft with smoke floats that successfully distracted the bombers allowing the ship to slip away unnoticed.[20]

Ha! So what are your 3 things, Seeker??

(oh and he overcame a difficult childhood to make a successful long marriage with the Queen and have 4 kids...)

creighton · 12/06/2011 13:03

People admire PP because he gets away with saying the things that they wish they could say but don't have the courage to. His daughter is 'forthright' in her views because no one tells her to shut up due to her position in society. If she were an ordinary person, she would have been taken down a peg or two over the years.

Can someone tell me what Nelson Mandela's dodgy past consists of? He fought for the freedom of his people, is there something wrong with that? He also encouraged all South Africans to work and live together, there was no mass revenge seeking that the Whites feared and expected after the atrocious treatment they meted out to the Africans over the previous centuries.

Animation · 12/06/2011 13:07

Just to change the subject slightly..

Going back to the interview. Fiona started off with a gushing - you must be so PROUD of your wonderful achievements - what are you most PROUD of?

She didn't just ask a question - she played to his vanity. He didn't conform with what she did there and he wasn't going to puff himself up like a celebrity might do.

He prickled.

On the one hand I liked him for not conforming, but on the other hand he did appear a bit rude. So - good bits - bad bits...
