creighton - have you ever read 'The Long Road to Freedom'? I have, and was surprised by the level of violence that was condoned by Mandela - although he clearly thought it necessary. Fascinating read.

Seeker - much as I don't want to personally insult you Grin I answered your three things several pages ago, but you chose to ignore.

I also said that the only things that people keep churning out to prove what a dreadful man PP is supposed to be, are the same old quotes from years ago. Surely if he was that bad, there'd be a continual supply of new material for the 'haters' amongst us..

So he was GREAT for rejecting the pressure by Fiona to inflate himself, but not so GREAT for being narky with it.

Animation · 12/06/2011 13:31

If he'd responded - "oh gee thanks Fiona - I am SOO proud of SOO much - and YOU are too wonderful yourself Fiona" - then I would have had to get the sick bucket.

I was relieved that nothing like that happened. His character got my thumbs up for that.

seeker · 12/06/2011 13:34

Right. Exactly how hard is it to be patron of 800 organizations? All you have to do is say "Yes" when asked.

He has said himself that he has nothing to do with the D of E scheme except give it his name.

I give you his war record - but he by no menas alone in that!

ajandjjmum · 12/06/2011 13:42

I think you're being extremely naive on all counts here seeker. Do you seriously think no effort goes in to supporting a charity? Even if it's just turning up to a meeting every other year, that's 400 meetings each year.

You're being a bit silly now.

seeker · 12/06/2011 13:50

It seems to be much more naive to think that the Royal Patron of a charity turns up to even one meeting every other year!

They don't you know. And the Queen doesn't actually shop personally at shops that have the Royal Warrant.

bruffin · 12/06/2011 13:56

"He has said himself that he has nothing to do with the D of E scheme except give it his name."

t was pretty obvious from the interview he was very self depreciating and I very much doubt he was going to blow his own trumpet on the work he does do. for the DofE and any of his other charities.

"It seems to be much more naive to think that the Royal Patron of a charity turns up to even one meeting every other year!"

I worked for one of Princess Annes Charities for 11 years and she did do a lot of work for us. She could also give speaches without any notes and was very knowledgable about the organisation and the problems of the people we helped. She had no time for the press at all but would give all her attention to those we helped.

seeker · 12/06/2011 14:01

Oh, for crying out loud - has this man hypnotized you or something? Do you think someone who was a serious working patron of an organization would deny involvement? That would put both him and the organization involved in such a bad light!

Why do people live in fantasy land about the royal family?

ajandjjmum · 12/06/2011 14:04

seeker - we disagree and we're not going to meet in the middle, but please don't insult people who give their time to charity as many of the Royals do - and I've actually seen that at first hand with Diana and Charles.

Furthermore, don't try and patronise me - it won't work. There are infact some small business that have the royal warrant where members of the Royal family do shop - again, please check before stating something as a fact, when it is incorrect.

bruffin · 12/06/2011 14:11

Grow up Seeker- I am not the one living in fantasy land -I actually worked for a charity with a royal patron. I worked in head office for 11 years, I know what went on. I suspect that DofE had similar involvement in his own charity.

ajandjjmum · 12/06/2011 14:13

Wikipedia
'The Duke carries out over 300 public engagements a year'
seeker - fact!

exoticfruits · 12/06/2011 15:43

I don't think that it is possible for anyone to be a figure head for a charity without having to get involved with meetings etc. I would say the good thing about the Duke of Edinburgh is that he doesn't make a song and dance about doing his bit and he really couldn't care less whether everyone or anyone knows what he does-he knows and the charity knows. Nowadays people not only have to do their bit but they want to polish their halo with everyone knowing. They can't care privately, they have to be seen to be caring.
