to want to apologise to the travellers camping across the road?

I live in a quiet village. Half a dozen travellers set up camp across the road last week. They have been quiet, tidy and their kids well behaved. However, this hasn't stopped some of my neighbours complaining to the council about them and plans are now in place to move them on.

I am ashamed by this NIMBY-ism.

maristella beesimo has been upset since she joined this thread and not at anything I said. You seem quite keen to paint me as a baddie. You say you've read the thread, but until an hour ago, when I mentioned the "white men hurting her DD's", I haven't done or said anything remotely inflamatory.

Apologies to beesimo for calling her racist in this respect.

Gotta say I worked for a charity that did 'alot' for the travelling communities. In fact our guy was considered the best at it - but I did once ask him the difference between roma, traveller, irish traveller etc and I was balled out for being a bigot.

I did laugh. Still laughing. Noone really knows.

My view is do nothing until someone does something that is bad and then inform the authorities.

I agree that the OP doesn't have the right to apologise for other people but I can see why she would want to.

Tha attitudes displayed by many people around where I live to the traveller community is disgusting. I have never seen blanket assumptions of the worhtlessless/lawlessness/unpleasantness of any collective group of people bar travellers.

It is not okay to say that a certain racial group, religious group, nationality, gender, sexuality are ALL x,y or z so why is it ok to say about travellers?

I have heard children as young as 10 refer to 'dirty gyppos'. It is vile.

I have taught traveller children and they are like any other kids. I can think of 3 who were delighful and 1 who was a disruptive pain in the backside. That sounds about typical for any group of 4 children!

As a sidenote, I also find it annoying when posts get deleted. We are supposed to have free speech in this country and I think people should be allowed to voice their racist, homophobic, insulting, sexist or whatever their own particular brand of posion is so that we can know what they are like!

My DDs have decided to reclaim their Heritage they are flashing out where they shoudn't be because I had made the mistake of not realising how anti-us people still are until now. I used to want them to mix in but now I don't it is too dangerous.

It has hurt them and shocked them what has been said on MN but they need to know the truth.

beesimo it strikes me as awfully sad, (for people of your heritage and for non-travelling British) - that there is NO trust in each other at all. As I said, many, many pages ago, people are either nice, or not nice, and it shouldn't matter what race, colour, or back-ground they are, people should be judged on THEIR actions, not a stereotype.

Please though, bear in mind, that this works both ways.

But bee it's not right that "you" hate "us" and you think that "we" hate "you".

Surely you've met some normal, nice people outside of the travelling community? You don't travel any longer, so must work, use education, other public services etc....

Do you encounter prejudice everywhere you go? And from everybody?

Erm - I've only come into contact twice with gypsies/travellers - once at uni and they were awfully racist and agressive to my friends and the second is my mother who IS NOT WHITE and I had to come down to her home and tell them to fuck off and leave her alone and never again to call her the P word.

So, 'fraid it your 'white' man stuff really doesn't resonate with me or my non white mother.

Thankfully she doesn't feel the need to reclaim her heritage or understand how anti her some minority groups are.

You have got in a right state being misjudged on MN. You try stopping at the side of the road, asking at nearby houses for water and having door after door slammed in your face. Walking in to shop with 2 friends and someone shouting 'get out get out one at a time and where I can see you' wiping spit out of your bairns hair, seeing a group of drunken men coming near and praying to yerself.

That's what happened to me Gran Gran day in day out. You haven't got a bloody clue about what being judged means

I'm not "in a state" - I thought I was having a conversation with you.

I'm sorry for what happened to your Gran, but I didn't do it, nor would I have done, nor will I ever do anything like that.

And I don't think it's fair of you to tar me with that brush, just as I am sure you are not to blame for the 30+ dirty disposable nappies in the field near my house.

beesimo, given that you don't know diablo, you've got no idea what she has experienced in her life. If you are going to object to being unfairly judged, then it is a bit rich for you to be doing that to other people and taking the view that all white men are a threat to your DD's.

I think a sock puppet is a) someone who sets up an online identity to deceive others and b)someone who creates a second identity in order to support the views of their first identity.

probably not explained it very well, but it's an insult. Beesimo is very good at dishing those out, while getting all affronted if anyone dares to criticise her/ the group she identifies with

All you have to do is wait - it might be days or weeks but sooner or later you'll find out the hard way why people are uncomfortable with travellers setting up near their homes. I've had years of dealing with them.

If Gypsy/Traveller are so lawless why none of us in jail I tell yous because the worst thing imaginable for us would be to be fastened in we don't risk our liberty to stealing your bloody washing!

I am not a racist.
I believe there is a difference between Gypsies/Romany and Travellers/Tinkers. The former are a race/a community the latter (IMO) jumped on the bandwagon (or mobile home) and are in my experience, unpleasant.

There is a difference between a race/culture/religion that is different and seperate to the indiginous population and struggles to maintain a cultural identity and integrity; whilst respecting the indiginous population; such as the Romany gypsies that I have encountered.

The Travellers/Tinkers are not a seperate race/creed or population. They're people that live in caravans; mainly Irish Roman Catholics. In my experience they are lawless, criminal and dirty. There is no respect for the indiginous population.

I'm not racist. Although born and bred in Norfolk; both parents are Irish. I have a long and direct experience of both gypsies and the travellers. The former I respect, the latter are just trouble on wheels.

Respect might be won if they (travellers) started showing some respect to the people that they impose themselves on. Respect is earned.

I'm at a loss diablo. Beesimo failed to explain/justify her comments, but I think that's a tendency of hers when she hears something she dislikes.

Have been on MN long enough to be hardened to the insults by now
