AIBU?

to want to apologise to the travellers camping across the road?

nethunsreject · 02/06/2011 06:53

I live in a quiet village. Half a dozen travellers set up camp across the road last week. They have been quiet, tidy and their kids well behaved. However, this hasn't stopped some of my neighbours complaining to the council about them and plans are now in place to move them on.

I am ashamed by this NIMBY-ism.

I'd like to know the answer to that too worraliberty

If you read back, that is not all that was said. But do it quickly because racist posts might well get deleted, and rightly so.

karma I did not coin the phrase 'travellers', and I agree it is a misleading title for a race of people, so many of whom are settled.

fedupofnamechanging · 05/06/2011 17:05

not blaming you for the choice of word maristella. apologies if it came across that way.

worraliberty · 05/06/2011 17:06

No you're right. It wasn't all that was said and I do agree their are some racist posts on this thread.

However, the word 'racism' does tend to get blindly bandied around when people simply object to the law being broken in this way.

You can't have a society where one group of people are allowed to do as they please because they are an ethnic group.

And that goes for any ethnic group...or infact any group or person at all.

When they are local to us they are as free a birds.

When they are somewhere their not know 'smiling and making eye contact' and say a purse goes missing from a shop???

Or a 'white' man tries to hurt one of the and it is my DD who made eye contact and smiled.

I am glad I come on this MN because nothing has change you can cover a cesspool of hate with a silver lid but lift the lid and the cesspool is still there.

This was posted by beesimo on Friday - I find it racially offensive to white men as it insinuates that all white men are child molesters!

Of course, its right that I wouldnt welcome people camping on my front lawn or tennis court or whatever.

The thing is that people object to travellers wherever they are. They often use land that is empty, neglected and frankly hazardous.

All of a sudden its part of God,s little acre and dear to the heart of anyone within a 10 mile radius. Hmm

Planning, tresspass etc is all too often used as an excuse for deep seated bigotry.

There are some vile travellers. I doubt the ratio is any higher in this group than any other though. I am fed up of hearing people on tv/radio etc expressing their concern about what could happen or what they heard happen to someone they once knew who had travellers come in and camp on their grannie's grave.

Some bloke put up razor wire and 8 foot fences on the off chance he was going to get attacked. He never was but I suppose he could have been Hmm

No it doesn't diabolo Hmm don't be so ridiculous

Report
thefirstMrsDeVere · 05/06/2011 17:20

diablo that is a pointless post. Without context it just sounds a bit desperate TBH.

Report
diabolo · 05/06/2011 17:21

maristella I was attempting sarcasm - beesimo thinks I am racist because I don't like some travellers, therefore I was trying to show how ridiculous I felt that was.

I will warn people when I am piss-taking in future.

Report
thefirstMrsDeVere · 05/06/2011 17:23

I think you should.

Report
diabolo · 05/06/2011 17:23

thefirst - I've been on this thread for several days now, and am fully aware of the context, thanks.

I was attempting to show that beesimo made a derogatory remark about a white man, yet has accused us of racism for making derogatory remarks about some travellers of whom we have had a bad experience.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 05/06/2011 17:24

But you were making comments about travellers you hadnt met.

Report
diabolo · 05/06/2011 17:26

when did I do that please thefirst*?

Are we talking about Irish travellers or New Age travellers? I find that the Romanies and the New Age travellers are always polite and clean, but the Irish travellers seem to make the most mess.
Especially in our part of the world Sad

thefirstMrsDeVere · 05/06/2011 17:29

This whole thread is about travellers no-one but the OP has met.

Report
Ripeberry · 05/06/2011 17:32

Maybe the OP needs to tell us what vehicles they were driving. The posher the car/caravan the more mess!

I have bumped thread 'to be really frightened' for info for you.

Gypsy have been in England at least 500 years

Gypsy used to move in big groups for safety and because they were travelling for work they moved from farm to farm picking crops as family groups. We built houses and barns for people and brought and sold horses. Nobody was mechanised until 60's.

When we no longer could get work partly because people started importing food cheap so British farmers stopped growing as EEC paid you wether you farmed or not. We went more and more into buying and selling carpets out of back of vans ect.

Then housing building went boom all the old stopping places built on sorry gypo we no longer need your labour we no longer want you here. We used to pride ourself all that was there to show Gypsy had been was burned ground from cooking fires. You say now look at mess we leave are you stupid most of that if not all is flytipped after we leave by other people, we travel as light as possible why do you think we would carry rusty old junk around then leave it at the side of the road. Having travellers come through is a great chance to dump YOUR rubbish.

If Gypsy/Traveller are so lawless why none of us in jail I tell yous because the worst thing imaginable for us would be to be fastened in we don't risk our liberty to stealing your bloody washing!

LadyOfTheCuntryManor · 05/06/2011 17:33

OP, are they paying council tax to have their rubbish removed?

Report
diabolo · 05/06/2011 17:33

thefirst - I wish you'd read my previous posts, wishing there were more travellers around like the ones the OP had recently met, then going on to give a bad experience of my own.

beesimo then joined the thread and called everyone who has had a bad experience "racist". That is offensive to me on many levels, and for many reasons I will not bore you with.

beesimo then made a nasty remark about "white men" men hurting her DD.

Yet when I bring this up, you tell me I am pointless and ridiculous and without context.

I really don't understand.

Report
thefirstMrsDeVere · 05/06/2011 17:34

Sorry if you feel ridiculed.

Report
MollyMurphy · 05/06/2011 17:38

I don't think that people disliking the traveller lifestyle is racist. That card is an easy out - it ends the discussion and tries to simplify complicated issues.

Report
maristella · 05/06/2011 17:39

diabolo it seemed as if you wanted any excuse to pick on beesimo

In fact, that's how you are still coming across.

At uni in the 1980's some local farmer didn't get his planning permission so invited irish traveller on his land. We all noticed it - believe me - we'd never experienced so much disgusting racially bigoted behaviour from these people on campus from these irish travellers. It was gross and ruined the experience of many of the foreign students at our university.

If the travellers or roma in your area live in peace then let them live in peace but if they cause issues and are horribly bigoted to the community in which they arrive, then ask the authorities for help.

diabolo · 05/06/2011 17:42

maristella please look at beesimo's reply to my very straight-forward question at the bottom Page 3 and top of Page 4.

It's not very nice.

You make an excellent point diabolo. Racism is in officially in the eye of the beholder, so any snivling queen bee who doesnt like what shes reading can get posts deleted on a whim.

Its rarely the target of the so called 'racism' who reports. They have more self respect.

Ruins MN for the rest of us TBH. beesimo was doing quite well defending her community by accusing everyone of being kiddy fiddlers or BNP supporters, she didnt need help.
