So she comes round and does the sweep and then takes her gloves off and goes into the kitchen to, I assume, put them in the bin.

She said "oh I cant see your bin so I'll just leave them here..."

Here, as I discovered after she left, was the top shelf/basket of my dishwasher that i was halfway through loading when she arrived. No, I am not joking, yes, she really did leave gloves that had been inside my vagina IN my dishwasher.

AIBU to make a complaint about her through PALS? Especially as this comes on the back of several other issues including her not returning urgent calls, not turning up for appointments and getting my notes wrong.

I have a friend who is a local HV and she says that this particular MW is v unpopular amongst them too and they want someone to make a complaint as otherwise nothing will change.

Grin This thread is rather funny really! Bogey I popped back to get a labour update and find that we are all now have to declare our feelings for our own vaginas before posting (mines lovely btw!)!
I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night...you know why!
I think you've had your answer, but please let us know how that labour's coming along - 6th?!!!!!!

ItDoesntBodenWell · 01/06/2011 11:56

I think 'not taking used equipment away' sounds far worse than what actually happened! Just leave that bit out, it's really very trivial.

Hope the sweep works :)
Remember to sterilise the baby before kissing it, as fearnelinen said :o

Bogeyface · 01/06/2011 12:10

Well I am officially in early labour now so no one is allowed to post that I am BU or you will go to hell!

3cm and contracting, taking me ages to type this, and have my steriliser ready to clean the baby with when it has come out of my fetid fanjo :o

I had some interesting dreams Fearne, and for the same reason! :o

agree its your mate that is the unprofessional one here

good luck!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 01/06/2011 12:35

That's great news, Bogeyface - is this going to be your labour thread now??

I can't comprehend why the midwife put the gloves in the dishwasher - I do get what people are saying about the heat of a dishwasher cycle killing most germs etc etc - but what I am struggling with is the concept of someone who can't find the bin, so decides that the next best option is the dishwasher - no matter what the rubbish might be! Confused

She could have asked where the bin was, or asked for a carrier bag or nappy sack to take the gloves away herself - but what logical process leads to rubbish going in the dishwasher??

I'm going to be lying awake, wondering this, tonight!

VeraNofftopic · 01/06/2011 12:36

Just stick baby in the dishwasher Bogey, twill be fine Grin

good luck!

ipswichwitch · 01/06/2011 12:38

technically, the gloves are clinical waste and she should have taken them with her for proper disposal. I'm a HC professional too, and we have to segregate all clinical waste (used gloves, plasters, dressings, basically anything we've touched a patient with) into different bins from regular household waste.

SusanneLinder · 01/06/2011 13:02

I work in the HC industry and any gloves/aprons we use should be bagged and put in the normal household waste-she could and should have put it in the outside bin.Different rules for infectious waste, but we wouldn't be dealing with.Non infectious waste should be disposed of on SITE.

We would never carry rubbish like this away in our cars.

Backed up by RCN btw

www.rcn.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0013/111082/003205.pdf

Ok she should have used the outside bin, but hardly worth making a huge deal over it.

Lunabelly · 01/06/2011 13:35

I truly don't get why the general opinion isn't EEEEWWWWW at used (for whatever orifice or reason) medical gloves being put in the dishwasher. Confused

belgo · 01/06/2011 13:37

I agree lunabelly, let's hope this midwife is more hygienic in hospital!

Good luck Bogeyface!

Wouldn't latex gloves melt???? Especially on the hot wash?????

Lunabelly · 01/06/2011 13:57

I've heard of Special Ladies Toys being put in the dishwasher as well. Even though I may or may not own an Anne Summers Special, I wouldn't put it in the dishwasher. Bums 'n' bits go in the bathroom, plates and glasses in the kitchen. (But then I think water from the cold tap in the bathroom tastes odd and that the toilet roll must face outwards and any trangression is met with ranting and raving a stern talking to...)

belgo · 01/06/2011 13:59

yes they'd melt and block the pipes.

LordOfTheFlies · 01/06/2011 14:01

At home I put DS and DD toothbrushes in the dishwasher and china toothmug and soapdish.
What is acceptable in your own house is entirely down to you, it is your own by-products after all.

Healthcare professionals have to do regular courses (waste management, cross infection) and after completing these have to comply.I'm pretty sure it would be a disciplnary offence (possibly retraining depending on level of error)

This isn't an "Am I BU, my sister cleaned the cats tray and left the gloves in my fridge"

Its a HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL who should act accordingly

Good luck BTW Bogeyface Breathe and Pant,Breathe and Pant

ObiWan · 01/06/2011 14:04

I don't think the midwife meant the gloves to be washed, it was just a convenient and easily cleaned surface Grin.

Are you having a homebirth Bogeyface? You'll be finding things in odd places for weeks if your midwife is by any chance reading this!

aldiwhore · 01/06/2011 14:09

Its your dishwasher, your germs, your vagina secretions... I am not saying its lovely, but she put them in a logical place... where should she have put them? She did try to seek a bin. Although, agree that she should probably be more better prepared and bring little nappy sacks or something with her.

YABU to consider complaining. YANBU to feel slightly nauseus that your vagina has sort of been on show to the dishwasher.

olderyetwider · 01/06/2011 14:20

I put cats' bowls, horses' bits, stirrups, etc in the dishwasher, so fanny gloves wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

belgo · 01/06/2011 14:25

Grin at the dishwasher being a logical place for dirty medical gloves.

Have you any idea of the problem of cross infection in hospitals, and amoungst vulnerable patients in the community?

It's up to you what you do in your own homes, but a health care professionals needs to adhere to strict levels of hygiene.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 01/06/2011 14:32

Aldiwhore - I honestly cannot comprehend the dishwasher as the logical alternative to the bin for the used gloves. Think of them as any sort of rubbish - potato peelings, or yesterday's paper, or some dud batteries - does the dishwasher seem like a sensible alternative to the bin for any of these? Rubbish, as a general rule, does not go in the dishwasher, regardless of whether it has been into someone's fanjo or not, imo.

There are plenty of other, far more logical alternatives - ask for a nappy sack to put the rubbish in and take it away for disposal, ask where the bin is, wrap the gloves in kitchen roll and leave on the work top or in the sink - to name but a few.

How is the dishwasher a logical place to put something that doesn't need washing?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/06/2011 14:35

Not quite the same thing but I'm going to ask my Grandmothers carers what they would do if they couldnt find a bin at a clients house. I want to see their faces when I mention some were put in a dishwasher...

Good luck with the birth Bogey. 6 children how lovely! you crazy woman

yoshiLunk · 01/06/2011 14:35

olderyetwider did Aggie and Kim visit you a few years back ? Hmm

olderyetwider · 01/06/2011 14:46

Haven't had a visit yet yoshi. What are you sceptical about?

yoshiLunk · 01/06/2011 14:51

i'm not sceptical about anything, i was using this face Hmm as an

Maybe you didn't see the episode, someone was doing just that, putting stirrups in the dishwasher (Kim and Aggie were very unnapproving btw tut tut), but hey, turns out you are not the only one then.

personally I think it's a bit Envy
