I friend recently had a first birthday party for her DD, I have a limited budget but found a really gorgeous outfit from Asda which had a character on that my friend's DD is 'obsessed' with, and posted this over to them as a pressie.

I spoke to said friend a few days later, and she was blah blah about her DD's birthday and all the lovely clothes people had given her. She then went on to say that some people had only given clothes from Asda or Tesco, and these 'had to go straight in the bin', as her DD only wears clothes from 'Next, and above'.........

I was a bit hmph, and didn't mention the gift I'd sent, but made my excuses and left the conversation. I felt a bit grrrrr that not only had she chucked my gift away, but she hadn't even remembered what I'd given (it was a week ago) - call me mad but I make a note when DD opens presents so I can at least pretend I have written thank you cards and thank people.

Besides, Next and above? Do labels really matter at 1yr old?

Or am I on another planet?

My ex-SIL very pointedly told me at her DD's first birthday that the only clothes which were acceptable were Next or Baby Gap.

I had bought clothes from elsewhere - not a supermarket, but not Next or Baby Gap.

She gave the unacceptable to the charity shop.

She'll learn, first comes pasta sauce, then potty training, then mud, holes and all manner of crap that you just get so bored of soaking in various chemical solutions that eventually we all (even the Gwyneth Paltrow types) head to Asda for a more 'disposable' priced garment! Some of DD's nicest outfits come from Asda, and yes, I have learnt my lesson, she spent her first year in boutique or Prada, I was also a twat! Would never have thrown brand new clothes away though.
I'd make that the last gift I sent her way tbh.

That's really awful that she said that to your face. You could immediately have called her on it and told her you got an Asda outfit - I'd liked to have heard how shed squirm out of that in your presence.

My DIL had this attitude to start with. When she realised that it meant we didnt buy her daughter very much for fear of it having the wrong label, or not being expensive enough... she changed her tune.

A total snob. And incredibly wasteful too. How dare she throw brand new, perfectly decent clothes away, when so many people would appreciate them. If she didn't like them then why not return them for the money?

That's so ungrateful. We've bought everything from Petit Bateau (when I've taken leave of my senses) to Matalan for our DD and she always gets nice comments about her clothes. Who cares where the clothes come from, especially when it's a gift.

The level of sheer nasty snobbery that some people can display never ceases to amaze me. Theres nothing wrong with Asda clothes (get loads there for my boys) but thats not the point - as you said its the rudeness to at saying this to you given in mind your present. And as for putting perfectly good clothes in the bin - Im outraged at that!

Don't get me started on clothes getting destroyed (my 2yr old looks like I dunked her in the bin/pan of spag bol sauce/sandpit/mud by the end of most days) - I chatted with her about this a few weeks back - she sends her DD to nursery in her best clothes and Lelli Kelli shoes, I said they would get trashed, and she replied that she would just buy more, rather that than dress her child in 'cheap looking' clothes as people would judge her DD.
