I know this is really unkind but Beatrice and Eugenie looked like the 2 ugly sisters

Wash my mouth out for saying it but their wedding outfits were completely unflattering. Someone should offer them style advice.

no they don't, Lying, you are over-simplifying the relationship between a newspaper and its readers. Do you seriously think the owners of newspapers have no influence? Why are people concerned about Murdoch owning so many papers if that is the case? Editors also have the power to take papers in different directions. You can know your readers would like something but still morally refuse to give it to them. Equally you can thrust pointless tripe at them despite constant complaints for years until a new editor comes in who decides to take a paper in a different direction and suddenly discovers it's more successful.
the responsibility for woman-hating shit in a male-owned, male-edited, paper, read by women, is shared between the sexes. Insisting it is purely women who are to blame is perverse.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/04/2011 21:34

Sybil... I'm oversimplifying nothing. If people didn't buy the papers, whatever they are, they would not be produced as the costs wouldn't be recouped. You can argue this as much as you like but I will disagree with you.

As far as 'women-hating' goes, I stand by my belief that when women do this, it makes any hating that men do pale by comparison. Your earlier comment about women bitching being enabled and encouraged by men is extremely insulting to women.

I'm unfettered by a compulsion to blame everything on one sex or the other and it's served me well so far.

Pagwatch · 29/04/2011 21:40

I think they are perfectly nice looking young women who have the misfortune to be let loose with money in designer stores where frankly those advising then should know better.

Fucking awful outfits.

LoveLeonardCohen · 29/04/2011 21:41

I think that they looked alright, but wasn't into the hat that Beatrix? was weraing. They didn't look too bad, they're not ugly though, that's a bit mean

TandB · 29/04/2011 21:42

I agree with Pagwatch. I think their clothes were hideous but they certainly aren't "ugly".

And Beatrice, at least, looked happy and excited which is more than can be said for Victoria Beckham who all the fashionistas rave about.

But still horrible clothes.

SybilBeddows · 29/04/2011 21:44

blaming everything on one sex is EXACTLY what you are doing here.

the DM editors are not forced at gunpoint by the readers to print what they print. Guessing what the readers want is an inexact science and there is a feedback mechanism between the paper and the market - markets are created as well as responded to.

and I think you are incredibly naive about the extent to which men bitch about women and their appearance - only a few posts ago someone on this thread referred to 'the drunk guy at the pub last week who opined I had a face like a frying pan', which is, you know, pretty nasty.

I don't know why you are so down on women as to think women bitching about other women is a worse kind of hatred than all the woman-hating violence that comes from men. Women bitching about women is not nice, but the idea that it is somehow worse than men doing it is laughable.

ssd · 29/04/2011 21:47

Beatrice and Eugine couldn't look pretty if they tried, they both have the royal horsey look to them

they might be lovely girls butidoubtit but pretty they aint

SoupDragon · 29/04/2011 21:51

I am not mysogonistic and i think they looked shit in those outfits. They did look like pantomime caricatures. they could have looked, and often do, look, far far better.

They are not ugly.

the outfits were.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 29/04/2011 21:54

Dear God, what were they thinking of? Money can't buy them looks OR style, it seems.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/04/2011 21:56

Sybil... You keep on referring to ownership and editing of the DM, and in your earlier post you mentioned that women write for it because they are paid to. The DM editors are forced by their greed to print whatever the salacious public wishes to read. It's perhaps a pointless chicken and egg scenario.

I referred to this particular thread and asked how many men were making nasty comments on it. The answer was probably 'none'. That's a small sample but in my view it's fairly representative. Many women tend to focus on how people look, it's not something that as many men are known to do. I don't know where your point about your face like a frying pan comes in really... what a drunken person might say has more to do with their intoxication than anything else. I would say that a women might be more likely to say it when sober as well.

I'm not down on women at all so stop twisting my words. If you don't agree that women bitching about each other and putting each other down isn't worse than (fewer, in my opinion) men bitching about women, then you don't agree. I didn't refer to violence, I referred to bitching. If you're going to debate then be accurate when you refer to what somebody else says.

SybilBeddows · 29/04/2011 22:05

you said 'As far as 'women-hating' goes, I stand by my belief that when women do this, it makes any hating that men do pale by comparison.'

those were your words. And I think you are wrong.

GreenEyesandHam · 29/04/2011 22:08

Perhaps, just perhaps, they have all the 'money and advice' yes, and decided to wear what the fuck they wanted anyway. Y'know, having their own minds and that.

Those crazy kids eh?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/04/2011 22:09

Sybil... I meant that women-hating is an actvity perpetuated by some men and many women. To me, it's crazy that one gender does this to it's own people. From my experience, most men don't bitch, many women do.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 29/04/2011 22:20

Well, anyway, the majority of posters on this thread have reserved their comments for the girls' choice of outfits, and, as has been said many times, 'ugly sisters,' while a bit of a cheap shot I agree, refers to the pantomime nature of their outfits.

ssd · 29/04/2011 22:21

no its not, its cos they are both not braw

forehead · 29/04/2011 23:20

I hope that they don't watch the ' Fashion Police' on E television. Joan Rivers
will have a field day.

BuntyPenfold · 30/04/2011 00:19

Beatrice and Eugenie looked as if they had been fired from a cannon through Accessorize (my daughter says).

blinks · 30/04/2011 00:22

i fucking loooved that stupid hat.

ZacharyQuack · 30/04/2011 02:19

I think it's just a shame that they had Vivienne Westwood, Valentino and Philip Treacy to chose from and they came up with those outfits. Such a wasted opportunity, I wish VB would take them under her wing.

noddyholder · 30/04/2011 13:57

I think it is because they were standing next to each other the whole time and the outfits and 'looks' were so incongruous. If they had been separate no one would have really commented.

valiumbandwitch · 30/04/2011 17:15

The Irish Times said Beatrice's hat was a clitoral inspiration, or something very mean. I thought she looked nice. That colour was lovely on her.
Eugenie didnt look great it's true.

valiumbandwitch · 30/04/2011 17:17

Ps, They are quite clearly NOT ugly, both of them are attractive, but not conventionally attractive like models or actresses. BUT it's so mean to point it out because their job is not to be 'pretty'. I think if any of you had a friend who'd looked like Beatrice or Eugenie you'd be describing that friend as very attractive.

Southcoastsarah · 30/04/2011 17:18

they really are awful looking, very unattractive indeed

valiumbandwitch · 30/04/2011 17:20

I'd love to be as unattractive as Eugenie.

BoffinMum · 30/04/2011 17:22

I think it's absolutely fine. The simplicity of the coat provides a good foil for the rather witty hat and the trim on the coat's collar. You need something a bit daft and flamboyant. I would have considered wearing it and I am supposed to have pretty reasonable taste.
