To object to people smoking in town/city centre?

Busy, shopping, lots of people crowded together type of thing. Then, you're walking along and having to pass people who are standing having a fag outside stores or walking along the street smoking and you have to follow in their smokey wake Hmm

I used to smoke and can understand that people like a fag, but surely they can hang on till they reach somewhere less crowded before they light up.

It's also annoying for ds2 who is 6 to have to walk along and get a face full of smoke when we walk past because of people standing with cigs.

Am I turning into one of those annoying militant ex smokers, or am I reasonable to feel angry about this?

I have never smoked but getting the odd waft of cig smoke is nothing to the amount of other pollutants in the air. Do you drive?

sparkle12mar08 · 29/03/2011 14:45

Personally I'd ban smoking in the open air full stop, and yes, even in peoples own gardens. If you want to breathe in skanky, cancer ridden air, go do it in a sealed room thanks.

sparkle12mar08 · 29/03/2011 14:45

And no, I don't drive either.

Dozer · 29/03/2011 14:46

Yabu (am not a smoker btw)

ashamedandconfused · 29/03/2011 14:46

YANBU

we cant even leave our back door or the kids bedroom windows open in summer without the stench of her-next-doors chain smoked fags wafting in and making me feel ill

bleurgh!

GypsyMoth · 29/03/2011 14:47

cancer ridden air?? there is cancer in the air? you sure about that or over reacting a tad?Hmm

GypsyMoth · 29/03/2011 14:49

worst thing i find is when the dd's come home from friends....and ALL their stuff smells of smoke,so needs washing there and then....and they need a shower, right there and then too!!

ilovemyhens · 29/03/2011 14:50

There's dozens of people though. Standing around outside the stores just smoking Hmm Surely they can just take themselves off somewhere quiet to do it.

Passive smoking is horrible and I thought that when I was a smoker.

DooinMeCleanin · 29/03/2011 14:50

Go do it in sealed room? Yeah because that won't be bad for the children o9f smokers will it?

I smoke in my yard and in the street, although I am aware of smoking in crowded places and tend not to do it. This is more incase I burn someone than give the air cancer though.

OP - YABU and a bit precious.

poopnscoop · 29/03/2011 14:52

It does bother me too. I walk down the street and HATE it if I am walking behind a smoker... UGH! Disgusting. I stop and wait till they're a good way away from me.

An employee smoking by the front door of a shop puts me off that shop totally. I will NOT go through the stink. What kind of 'pleasant shopping experience' are they offering me?

Me being a SEVERE asthmatic is a concern to me too naturally. Smoke is one of my biggest triggers.

Chil1234 · 29/03/2011 14:53

YABU. (And yes, ex-smokers are always the most intolerant :) ). Smokers have been pushed into smaller and smaller allowable places and, short of a total ban, where are they supposed to go? As a former smoker I expect you're sensitised to it. As a non-smoker I find the smell of smoke in a street unpleasant, but not enough to outlaw it alltogether.

sparkle12mar08 · 29/03/2011 14:55

I am a child of smokers, and I will loathe the selfishness of smoking till the day I die. Don't care if I'm over reacting frankly. It stinks, you stink, and so does everything you come into contact with. I don't want to have to breathe it, smell it, walk through it, whatever. Get a mask and smoke in that for all I care about your convenience.

:)

Happy now?

pjmama · 29/03/2011 14:55

I'm sorry but I don't buy this "I smoke, you drive" argument that gets trotted out everytime somebody objects to smoking.

For anything but the shortest of journeys there is no choice in our society except to travel in vehicles that pump out pollutants - not great for anybody but until there's a widely available alternative then we just have to live with it.

Smoking is ALWAYS a choice.

There are lots of very considerate smokers out their, exercising their right to personal freedom and choice whilst being mindful of the impact on others. Then there are those that don't give a shit! Personally I just try and stay out of their way! Grin

DontGoCurly · 29/03/2011 14:56

I hate it when you have to pass one of those bins with the all the holes in the top where people are supposed to stab out cigs and there's loads of smouldering butts and filters on fire.....the smell is revolting!

VinegarTits · 29/03/2011 14:56

YANBU there should be a total ban

Francagoestohollywood · 29/03/2011 14:57

YABU. They are outside. Open air. It is still legal to smoke.

sparkle12mar08 · 29/03/2011 14:58

It shouldn't be Franca, it shouldn't be ;)

sparkle12mar08 · 29/03/2011 14:58

Bugger Wink

Francagoestohollywood · 29/03/2011 14:59

Driving is a choice too, in most cases, if you think about it.

Also, you are probably lucky to live in a small town with not so much traffic, I can assure you that if you walk in the polluted streets of Milan where I live, you'll barely notice people smoking in the streets, because the smell of car exhaustions is disgusting and overwhelming.

Francagoestohollywood · 29/03/2011 15:01

Well, that's another thread sparkle Grin

FabbyChic · 29/03/2011 15:07

I love smoking but I don't stand outside a shop and smoke, I stand and roll it then walk around smoking. I don't care what others think, I pay my taxes on my smokes so I shall smoke them.

Rafi · 29/03/2011 15:19

So smokers need somewhere to smoke without bothering anyone, especially kids, pregnant women and people with asthma.... Bring back the smoking pubs, make them nice and comfortable and adult-only, but then make cigarettes only available - and legal - there and ban them everywhere else.

Done Smile

poopnscoop · 29/03/2011 15:25

Franca, thanks for putting me off ever visiting Milan!

Nooooooooooooo Rafi, I am loving being able to actually visit pubs now!!!

cushionyet · 29/03/2011 15:40

Clearly you don't realise how much tax money is generated by cigarette sales.

OliPolly · 29/03/2011 15:48

OP - YANBU

I have nothing against people who smoke (their body and all that) but they shouldn't force their smoke on everyone else! I saw someone smoking at a bus shelter once - Hmm

Smokers stink - yuck!
