To object to people smoking in town/city centre?

Busy, shopping, lots of people crowded together type of thing. Then, you're walking along and having to pass people who are standing having a fag outside stores or walking along the street smoking and you have to follow in their smokey wake

I used to smoke and can understand that people like a fag, but surely they can hang on till they reach somewhere less crowded before they light up.

It's also annoying for ds2 who is 6 to have to walk along and get a face full of smoke when we walk past because of people standing with cigs.

Am I turning into one of those annoying militant ex smokers, or am I reasonable to feel angry about this?

so because cigarettes are heavily taxed, that means smokers should be able to smoke where they like?

I pay my taxes too, i dont want to breath in someone eles foul smoke while entering a shop/hospital/train station

smoke in your own homes, or find a field in the middle of nowhere, with no one else around, selfish fuckers

I pay high taxes too... and don't have any habits that are detrimental to others.

Oh but then I am UNselfish.

I'm not saying all smokers are selfish (many are very considerate), but the attitude of some here shows complete selfishness.

Well assuming that you beleive people should be allowed to smoke, where can they do it then? Not indoors in public places and now not in towns or crowded areas

I don't much care for getting a lung full of smoke when I'm out running but I'm afraid it's just one of those things.

Smokers stand outside. That is enough. Non smokers cannot claim pubs and restaurants and hotels and the outside.

Tough. Smokers don't like standing in the rain in the winter, and non smokers hate sitting outside in the summer. You'll just have to deal with that.

I'm glad that smoking was banned in pubs and train stations etc, but I'm not fussed about breathing in a puff of smoke in the street (or my kids doing so).

For it to do you any damage you have to have persistent exposure. I used to come back from the pub with a sore throat, as if I'd smoked 5 fags myself, which was awful, but there is no such effect from just passing by other smokers!

I hate smoking, even moreso now Ds has asthma triggered by smoking. However to remove the right to smoke outdoors is going to far. The only exception should be childrens play areas IMO.

The only time I object to people smoking outdoors is when people come and stand next to where I am stood with Ds and light up - that is rude IMO.

there should be huge designated smoking fields, where they can congregate and polute each other

or they should be forced underground, to smoke in the sewers

YABU. I don't smoke, but they are not doing anything against the law. Didn't stop me from growling at anyone with a fag in their hand anywhere near my buggy when my boys were babies though.

Sigh - this thread makes me want to start smoking again as a reaction to all the nose in the air types looking down on the commoners with their evil fags polluting 'their' air. Get over yerselves! (Oh, and yes, YABU)

Well I smoke but have my own rules about it.

I never smoke pushing the pram, I never smoke in a busy area and I never smoke in my home.

So if I am in town with the pram and I want a fag, I leave the centre of town and go sit on a bench literally 2 minutes away but where hardly any body goes.

And even as a smoker, I hate having to walk behind someone who's fag smoke is wafting in my direction.

See this was my argument when they banned smoking in pubs, that everyone would be smoking outside and you'd have to walk your kids through it. Now having said that, yes I agree it is unpleasant but I really don't think a bit of cigarette smoke out in the open air is really going to cause any harm, therefore I think YABU and yes probably turning into a militant ex-smoker!

The last time I checked it was still legal to smoke. God people are so precious, honestly the smell makes you ill? Bullshit

Here is a list of things I can't stand but tolerate without moaning.

People who stink of booze
Drunk people
Women and men with too much perfume on
Pasty fat spillage
People shouting at their kids
Slow walkers
Women who can't drive properly
Wimpy kids

But I understand that we live in a diverse society so I SUCK IT UP
