To object to people smoking in town/city centre?

Busy, shopping, lots of people crowded together type of thing. Then, you're walking along and having to pass people who are standing having a fag outside stores or walking along the street smoking and you have to follow in their smokey wake Hmm

I used to smoke and can understand that people like a fag, but surely they can hang on till they reach somewhere less crowded before they light up.

It's also annoying for ds2 who is 6 to have to walk along and get a face full of smoke when we walk past because of people standing with cigs.

Am I turning into one of those annoying militant ex smokers, or am I reasonable to feel angry about this?

I take it all the non smoking militants don't drive because it would be the tiniest bit hypocritical to lecture us on the evils of smoking then get I to your unrenewable fuel powered cars that waft any amount of carbon monoxide into the air . You all must not drink or eat fatty foods either because obeseity and heart disease cost the Nhs a fortune as does treatment for alcohol related disease.
If you get your way and all the selfish evil smokers are rounded up and shot could we have one last ciggie ?

edam · 29/03/2011 23:03

Or drive diesel cars, especially, which fill the air full of particulates that cause lung cancer...

MillsAndDoom · 29/03/2011 23:05

It annoys me only cos it sets of DDs asthma - but then so does pollen and pollution, unfortunately can't ban flowers and cars either Wink

I'm an ex smoker but not in the judgy camp, more in the "ooh I'd love a fag right now" camp

expatinscotland · 29/03/2011 23:20

. . . passes the dutchy on the left hand side . . .

expatinscotland · 29/03/2011 23:20

We're all doomed!

spiderslegs · 29/03/2011 23:36

Well Sweet, try to help, glad I got your dander up....

spiderslegs · 29/03/2011 23:38

...takes the dutchy (cheers expat) - does that not mean I'm smoking the Prince of Wales though.....

NoHunIntended · 29/03/2011 23:55

I said this upthread so sorry for the repeat, but what do the smokers suggest I do? I live in a block with an taxi firm office next door (24 hours) and a hair salon the other side. The workers smoke and congregate outside, meaning I have to walk through them every time I leave my front door. AND they smoke at the back of the office, directly under my bedroom window, meaning I can't open my bedroom window without all the smoke wafting in. EVER.
It is disgusting, it stinks.

Eventually we will move, and I will get a detached house. But for now, I have to put up with stupid selfish smokers, in my own home, and I think this is grossly unfair.

Smoke in your own house as much as you like.

spiderslegs · 30/03/2011 00:10

Mmmm - move............

Thank fuck I live in my own house in 50 acres.

God forbid I should encroach upon you with my filth....

Mumofaflump · 30/03/2011 08:58

I don't smoke, I do drink. I drive a fast car with loud music. I work for a pensions company owned by a bank...

Everything that everyone does is going to annoy somebody, smoking and bankers are just "fashionable" to object to at the moment.

Saying that, I did object to the chap who plonked himself on a bench next to me and lit up his waccy-baccy joint while I was in the middle of feeding DS...

expatinscotland · 30/03/2011 09:05

Life is unfair.

Oh, no! I can't believe it! I blame the government and society.

VinegarTits · 30/03/2011 10:01

Blimey you smokers get really angry dont you? have a fag and chill man Wink

Underachieving · 30/03/2011 11:02

Has anyone noticed the delightful irony of the anti-smoking brigade complaining about smokers walking ahead of them?

No?

Have another think...

Got it now?

The smoker is walking AWAY from them. They are actually following the poor bastard.

ChristinedePizan · 30/03/2011 11:06

I would think that the taxis are probably more injurious to your health than the smokers tbh nohunintended

knittedbreast · 30/03/2011 11:26

Id be far more concerned about the carcogens in car pollution myself. they are in an open space with air. i dont have a problem with it

Olessaty · 30/03/2011 11:37

Like angry bees. LOL. Calm them with smoke.

Melly19MummyToBe · 30/03/2011 11:50

YANBU I hate it too, it never used to bother me too much but since I've been pregnant I absolutely hate it and always try to hold my breath if I have to walk through clouds of fag smoke. Also it really annoys me when my mum takes me, my sister and her 2 DCs out for dinner every tuesday and the pub we go to has a big sign outside the front door saying
"This is a no smoking area, if you wish to smoke please use the beer garden at the rear of the premises"
And you ALWAYS have a crowd of about 5 or 6 people standing right next to the sign smoking. It does my head in.

usualsuspect · 30/03/2011 16:21

I thought the smokers were pretty chilled

its the anti smokers who shout the loudest Wink

NoHunIntended · 30/03/2011 16:30

Christine, not sure if you meant my risk of getting run over, or the exhaust fumes, but this doesn't actually apply, as the taxis don't all congregate outside my door - the office is one of those call centre type things, sending drivers all over the place from job to job. That said, I do live on a main road, so have plenty of traffic to contend with - not ideal for optimal health, but why ADD to the poisons any more than necessary with cigarette smoke?
Anyway, I was as much complaining about the unpleasantness of the smell that wafts in through my bedroom window (or not, as I don't open it), as much as the carcinogens.

I can't wait to move.

lilyliz · 30/03/2011 16:58

how tall is your 6yr old daughter?car fumes will be more a risk to her than an adults ciggies
