the comment he made to that lad in Jamies Dream School,
was appalling,
(for people who didnt see)
there was no provocation the class was joking around about evolution, about animals are faster and this lad pointed to his muscle ..and Starkey said,

'you're so fat im surprised you can move!'
I felt for the lad, my blood was boiling
when will teachers learn humiliation does not work as a teaching technique!!!

sorry rant over,

There is a difference between telling a child they are fat in a nice way and singling them out and calling them fat in front of their peers.

I am getting that the upset wasn't so much the use of the word fat but the element of humiliation.

Not that I saw the program, mind Grin

PS I also like rolf harris - is that relevant?

expatinscotland · 03/03/2011 16:20

He's a misogynist, too.

Hullygully · 03/03/2011 16:20

I don't think you can separate the fat from the humiliation. They were incontrovertibly linked.

Don't let not seeing the prog hamper you. I never do.

Ormirian · 03/03/2011 16:21

I suppose it would be homophobic if I intended it to be. I didn't. I was using it as a statement of fact. I have no beef with homosexuals in the slightest. I wonder if the juxtaposition of 'queen' and 'nasty' was the problem

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 03/03/2011 16:21

we don't pretend it's ok to be fat.
it's just there isn't an awful lot of point in pointing and laughing, or even helpfully pointing it out to people; generally I would think if a 17 year old boy is overweight he will have noticed it himself.

Hullygully · 03/03/2011 16:21

So are we all saying he is a compact, short, spiteful old misogynistic queen? Just to be clear.

Hullygully · 03/03/2011 16:22

Orm hates poofs.

Fact.

Ormirian · 03/03/2011 16:22

Hully! Stop it !

talleyrand · 03/03/2011 16:23

he didn't seem very humiliated to me... more self-righteous.

it's also quite humilating for a fat child to grow up and suddenly realise that he/she isn't actually respected for their inner beauty, as they have been taught to believe, but actually they are looked down on because they are porky...

ValiumSingleton · 03/03/2011 16:23

he is all of that, plus no looker, and he's knocking on a bit in years too..

privategodfrey · 03/03/2011 16:24

Orm indeed the juxtaposition was the problem :)

Sorry for jumping on the comment if it wasn't intended in an offensive manner.
