the comment he made to that lad in Jamies Dream School,
was appalling,
(for people who didnt see)
there was no provocation the class was joking around about evolution, about animals are faster and this lad pointed to his muscle ..and Starkey said,

'you're so fat im surprised you can move!'
I felt for the lad, my blood was boiling
when will teachers learn humiliation does not work as a teaching technique!!!

sorry rant over,

And was the kid fat?....

notrightnow · 03/03/2011 15:57

I thought it was interesting that the programme skated over Starkey's later remarks to camera though. Leaving aside his own behaviour, he was making the point that a 'friendly', tolerant environment where education is 'fun', and every effort is made to accommodate and encourage these very difficult teens, had not served any of them well. Dream School is all very well, but what were the rules for the kids? There didn't seem to be any. It's all very well to try to engage interest, but there has to be something from the other side as well, doesn't there? If not respect, at least a willingness to check your phone in at the door and listen.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow · 03/03/2011 15:57

I honestly think David Starkey's got some kind of underlying personality disorder I really do.

Having said that, he is a seriously clever man.

Ormirian · 03/03/2011 15:58

Oooooh David Starkey?

Ah yes he is a nasty old queen. Used to be on the Moral Maze on wed evening. Stopped listening to it in the car on the way home from my parents as i didn't want the DC listening to mummy swearing.

LibraPoppyGirl · 03/03/2011 16:01

talleyrand I think I can sort of understand what you are trying to say, reading between the lines that is.

However, I cannot believe that you seriously think that it is acceptable to say to anyone...

"hey, fatty, lose some weight, why don't you" Hmm

privategodfrey · 03/03/2011 16:02

Not sure what his sexuality has to do with it Ormirian.

So - what was the lads response?

ValiumSingleton · 03/03/2011 16:04

He's the guy that angry at the suggestion that a woman's story or perspective was a legitimate part of history. He actually went on tv to make the point that women's experiences aren't history Confused

stupid git.

LibraPoppyGirl · 03/03/2011 16:04

Are we in some kind of twilight zone? Confused

"nasty old queen" Shock

My cue to go and make a Brew me thinks!!

Sorry, I should have put inverted commas round it and then it would have been OK.

sue52 · 03/03/2011 16:08

The boy's come back was something like," have you always been 4 foot tall?". I thought that was quite good under the circumstances.

sue52 · 03/03/2011 16:10

Chil I didn't think the boy was fat. Just the sort of teenage chubbyness that tends to melt away when they hit their twenties.

privategodfrey · 03/03/2011 16:12

Sorry, I should have put inverted commas round it and then it would have been OK

No it wouldn't, and I know what you are referring to. I assumed the earlier mention was a direct quote, which would still have been distasteful.

Just a bit odd to slag a man off for his rudeness calling someone fatty and describing him in a homophobic manner.

Hullygully · 03/03/2011 16:12

he was making the point that a 'friendly', tolerant environment where education is 'fun', and every effort is made to accommodate and encourage these very difficult teens, had not served any of them well

But it's extremely unlikely that any of them (excpet Henry) HAD experienced that at school. Or home.

LessNarkyPuffin · 03/03/2011 16:13

What Reality said, and

  1. I saw him walking his dogs once.
Ormirian · 03/03/2011 16:13

He's a 'queen' (not a homophobic term as far as I know) and without a doubt, nasty.

Hullygully · 03/03/2011 16:14
notsolomon · 03/03/2011 16:14

I haven't seen the programme but someone who has told me the boy was enormously obese Hmm not that it is relevant, I suppose, exactly HOW fat he was Grin

Hullygully · 03/03/2011 16:14

I love Rolf too.

It was far too big a group (as darling Rolfy said). With kids like that, you need em in groups of four or so.

Hullygully · 03/03/2011 16:15

He was only a bit fat.

Starkey was bang out of order and looked like a nasty old spiteful.

Ormirian · 03/03/2011 16:15

Stop sniggering hully! It's serious. I shall flog myself later with DH's copy of the Guardian.

talleyrand · 03/03/2011 16:16

librapoppygirl
of course I am serious, and why not?

being fat isn't all right, and it isn't fun
this is one of the busiest places in MN

yet we don't tell our children this. we pretend it's OK to be fat and leave them to work it the truth the hard way. Sometimes way too late. It's not being fair to them.

TheCrackFox · 03/03/2011 16:17

Starkey isn't exactly skinny is he?

Hullygully · 03/03/2011 16:18

He's compact. But not porky, I wouldn't say.

Hullygully · 03/03/2011 16:18

Would we say Simon Callow was mildly tending towards the chub?
