Porn. Not a thread about a thread so much as a thread ^inspired^ by a thread

From what I have seen on MN, it seems I am in a very small minority not to have a problem with porn? Its a complete non-issue to me whether my DH uses porn.
I just dont understand it? Yes, I am aware that women can be exploited, but that is true of so many other things too. And it seems to be the porn itself that is the problem, rather than the working conditions that bothers people anyway.
What is so bad about watching people having sex? To anyone that says its poorly acted, why does that matter so much? Lots of TV programmes are poorly acted, that doesnt stop people enjoying them!

I obviously dont think AIBU, but am curious to know why people would think I am? And okay, part of me is hoping that the use of porn will have a less extreme reaction away from the Relationships board?

I notice you say "explicit misogyny", not misogyny itself? I don't know the film makers you mention so can't comment, but porn as a whole is built on demeaning and objectifying women, and a female film-maker makes fuck all difference to that. Sounds like fair-trade is a good anology, just like the coffee growers, they are still getting fucked, just not quite as hard.

wildstrawberryplace · 22/02/2011 23:13

begonybampot Do you remember the name of the documentary? I saw it too, it was a really good documentary, been thinking about it and would like to watch it again sometime. Was it Jon Ronson? I can't remember.

The British woman going to LA was heartbreaking. Did you see the bit where the porn impresario guy (for want of a better phrase) - Max Head I think he was called - basically raped her there, on camera, in a non porn situation (ie it was some kind of interview, no cameras apart from the documentary makers) while they were filming the documentary? Horrendous.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 22/02/2011 23:43

Buzz: Not everyone's definition of misogyny is the same. Some people think that seeing a woman suck a penis or have sex with more than one man at the same time is automatically misogynistic, this is not necessarily so.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 22/02/2011 23:52

Also, porn is often used as a scapegoat for a more widespread culture of misogyny and cruelty that is not really driven by the porn industry at all. I'm thinking of the laugh-at-the-loonies shows like Jeremy Kyle and the X factor, and the Daily Mail's frequent use of individual women's personal tragedies and difficulties to push a 'Women! Know Your Place!' agenda.

BuzzLiteBeer · 22/02/2011 23:56

I'm not following your logic there at all, I'm afraid. What has porn got to do with any of those things, other than they are all exploitative?

KittyBigglesworth · 23/02/2011 01:00

wildstrawberryplace, I don't remember what it was called but I remember the name of the English girl -it was Felicity. It was very sad, I wonder what happened to her? I think it was on tv about 10 years ago.

begonyabampot · 23/02/2011 01:22

Regarding the Felicity documentary - googled and found this - there were quite a few articles on the programme.

KittyBigglesworth · 23/02/2011 02:07

Yes, that's the one begonyabampot, thanks for the link. A partipant 'bleeding' and the porn producer boasting that he makes "Belson look like a picnic" allow the viewer to gain an insight of the reality of the porn set. Any woman who thinks that she is the one doing the manipulating would have to have more strength than the men who are doing God knows what to her, particularly when they are in an isolated house. Interesting that Felicity said that she had decided to give it up after talking about her relationship with her absent father.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 23/02/2011 09:45

An interesting blog - there are some pics on the page but nothing really alarming, it does contain Mature Content so not work or kid-safe.

ScarlettWalking · 23/02/2011 12:38

I remember that documentary about felicity. When max hardcore just sat her on his lap and put his penis inside her, just terrifying stuff. And when she was crying during a scene and he started to force her to continue and the documentary makers got her out of there.

Anyone saying porn is harmless fun should watch that film, it was so sick and the girls " looked" like they were loving it on screen, such a sick industry.

robotlollypopman · 25/02/2011 11:29

Studies have also shown that girls/women who use vibrators and dildos have unrealistic views of real penises and expect them to be made of rubber/plastic and make a buzzing noise. Also, vibrators are being exploited. Do you think they enjoy being rammed into lady parts?

SunshineisSorry · 25/02/2011 11:45

PMSL at robotlollypopman - I know what you mean, i was fucking horrified when my DP got his penis out and it didn't look like a rabbit!!

lovenamechange100 · 28/02/2011 13:15

Im more confuddled about the whole porn issue now but I think I have vibrator Envy!

glitteryturd · 28/02/2011 14:32

I worked in porn. I did dvds, magazines, webcam etc.

I stumbled into it accidentally and I enjoyed the life style while it lasted. I am married, was at the time but had no children. Now I do so would never go back to it now. Mainly cos I am too tired!

When doing a shoot it's not like having sex and enjoying it. You work to command and if it's anal required, then anal it will be. The action is real but there is plenty of acting. Most the time I was just desperate to get it over with so I could go to bed and sleep!

I expect people to think low of me, comes with the job. That is all it was, a job. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I am not afraid to voice mine on other subjects so you should not be afraid to voice yours on the subject of porn.

Can I just add, I am not your typical porn star. I am a bbw which means I am fat. Opened my eyes though cos I got paid more than the skinny birds, with fake boobs lol. Although I wish I was skinny with fake boobs :)

lovenamechange100 · 28/02/2011 14:52

Glittery thanks for sharing. Were you well treated?

glitteryturd · 28/02/2011 15:33

Yes, very well. I always felt like people didn't want to annoy me lol. I'm pretty confident and I handled all my own contracts. They got what they paid for and nothing more. I was asked to do things I didn't want to but was never afraid to say no, and did.

I have seen some people desperate to 'make it' and porn isn't the way to go but they would do anything at the drop of a hat. I had a 9-5 job so this was a 2nd job to me so I had to turn a lot if work down as I ended up going straight from work to studios and getting 3 hours sleep a night, not good. And yes, work did find out about it. I did panic but they didn't bother. I was lucky lol.

SardineQueen · 28/02/2011 18:23

That sounds like an exhausting schedule glittery!

Thank you for posting your experiences, it is good to hear from someone who has been involved in the industry and who is genuine (some posters we get on these threads sometimes seem to join to make a point and their posts can be a little strange!) Smile
