to question the sanity of those who worship Kurt Cobain/Nirvana?

I must be missing something.

But why is Kurt Cobain such an 'icon'? Why do people think Nirvana are brilliant?

To me, it sounds like depressing nonsense, and I cannot understand what anybody gets from it. And it appears that some people worship Kurt Cobain. What is there about him to worship? From what I can tell, he was a bit rubbish!

But maybe i just don't 'get' it. I have however just been spoken to very rudely by my aunty when I said that the best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grohl forming the Foo Fighters.

YABU-

He wrote amazing lyrics- So did Morrissey.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 14:26

He was very hot.

Lots of hot men look like they need a wash. Meh, not going to get close enough to smell them so what does it matter. Grin

mozette · 18/02/2011 14:27

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh jesus LORD!!!!

Morrissey CAUSES depression?????

You are right - he does brainwash people - he is a magical mystical creature who, through his lyrics, brainwashes you into being depressed and worshipping at the temple of Moz!!

He is one of the most influential lyricists of his generation and to many, including me, he is a god but FFS woman HE doesn't CAUSE depression!

If you listen to the vast majority of his songs they are actually quite humorous

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 14:27

MollysChambers I agree.

GetOrfMoiLand · 18/02/2011 14:27

I was 14 when Kurt Cobain killed himself. We were all distraught at school. I did a shrine of Nirvana and Kurt on my pencil tin with tippex and marker pen.

Mind you, I was not as upset at some of the girls who cried openly in corridors. Lots of kids has bought tickets to see Nirvana in Cardiff which was planned about a month or so after he died. I alienated myself by putting up a poster saying 'Half Price Nirvana Tickets available NOW! - someone recognised my writing and I was vilified by half of Year 11.

Normantebbit · 18/02/2011 14:27

Could you please desist from comparing Morrissey and Nirvana to My Chemical Romance.

It's like comparing Dusty Springfield to Cheryl Cole.

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 14:28

Yes, I do believe there was an excellent article in the BMJ about the effects of Morrisey-induced depression GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

GetOrfMoiLand · 18/02/2011 14:29

After Nirvana I deeply got into Depeche Mode and the Smiths, and listened to The Queen is Dead LP, How Soon is Now and Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion pretty much on a loop for the next 10 years.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 14:29

GetOrf - Sob at tippex shrine. Sad

mozette · 18/02/2011 14:29

I agree Normantebbit

Now step away from the Queen is Dead album Morrissey caused depression apparently Hmm

MySweetPrince · 18/02/2011 14:30

Rhianna? See...I don't "get" her music, nothing I haven't heard before and My 18 yr old DD would rather cut off her ears than listen to that. She likes Arcade Fire, The Smiths, The Cure,Placebo (angsty)but also Cee lo Green,Marina,Foo's....like I said - different tastes an all that.

mozette · 18/02/2011 14:30

Oh this thread had cheered me up at work - must go and listen to Strangeways to make myself depressed again

I was gutted that I missed the Smiths heyday, and strangely delighted when This Charming Man was inexplicably re-released in the late 90s (went and bought several copies to try and get them to number one).

I secretly hope that The Smiths will reform for a reunion concert at a festival one day.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 14:32

Must admit I don't "get" The Smiths. Maybe a little before my time (35)?

Used to work with a bloke who LOVED them. He was a very cheery chap with no signs of depression.

Whatnamechange · 18/02/2011 14:33

I would rather my ds listened to nirvana oasis and the red hot chili peppers than listen to rihannas pornographic songs and the bland auto tuned cheryl cole / justin bieber crap .
The reasons those bands are still popular now is because they make really good music that people across all generations identify with .

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/02/2011 14:33

Well I think he does. I know one woman who has Morrissey's name tattooed on her arm! She is very depressed and his music is apparently the 'only thing that comforts her'. I know several obsessive fans, and yet I can't see how his music is influential at all, his lyrics are just stupid imo.

xStarGirl · 18/02/2011 14:34

Oh FGS. So you think grunge is a bad influence on people because it's depressing and whiny? Way to jump on that bandwagon about a decade too late Hmm

99% of pop music these days is utter shite. Seriously, Rhianna as appropriate listening for a young girl? I despair, I really do.

Good music is there if you want to look for it. I love Nirvana, and I'd barely started school when Kurt died. When I was a teenager, it helped me feel better, as I had something to identify with, in a way.

And the Foos are brill. Still cannot forgive my mother for going to see them and taking my DAD instead of me Angry

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 14:34

And Rihanna's lyrics aren't?

mozette · 18/02/2011 14:35

You can't see how is music is influencial?

His lyrics are just stupid?

Stick to Rihanna as you clearly have no musical taste at all!

Even if you don't like or get him you surely can't deny the influence him and Johnny Marr have had on the British Music Scene?

GetOrfMoiLand · 18/02/2011 14:35

It's not just Morrisey's lyrics for me (which are wonderful I think, witty more than anything) - it is the patricular sound of the guitar playing as well.

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/02/2011 14:36

I personally think Rihanna will be looked back on as one of the greatest female singers, like Whitney.

She's brilliant and a good role model. She got through the Chris Brown ordeal and just came back with more confidence and self belief and didn't let it phase her at all.

Good old Autotune.

DaffadownDilly · 18/02/2011 14:37

Nirvana being pretentious is the funniest thing I have read in ages Grin

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/02/2011 14:37

Yes I get that he is 'influential' but I don't understand why.
