to question the sanity of those who worship Kurt Cobain/Nirvana?

I must be missing something.

But why is Kurt Cobain such an 'icon'? Why do people think Nirvana are brilliant?

To me, it sounds like depressing nonsense, and I cannot understand what anybody gets from it. And it appears that some people worship Kurt Cobain. What is there about him to worship? From what I can tell, he was a bit rubbish!

But maybe i just don't 'get' it. I have however just been spoken to very rudely by my aunty when I said that the best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grohl forming the Foo Fighters.

Yes, I don't think you are meant to interpret it literally though.

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 14:08

Oi, I'm 23 thank you very much! Grin

MySweetPrince · 18/02/2011 14:09

Sequins - what do you listen to just out of interest?

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/02/2011 14:11

Well, clearly I am in the minority on here. But I'd be really concerned if my daughter grew up and listened to that kind of music! I just can't see anything positive in it. It just sounds like angry ranting to me. It's like the Weird Al version of Smells Like Teen Spirit. 'I'm angryyyy, and I'm screeeeeaming'

Guns and Roses were bloody amazing too. Misogynistic drug buckets that they were.

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/02/2011 14:12

MySweetPrince I listen to all kinds. Rihanna and Drake are current favourites. Jamie Foxx, Beyonce - mainly R&B, I like a lot of Motown though, classic Madonna etc.

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 14:12

I absolutely love G n'R!

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 14:13

My kids listen to rock all the time. Avoid the sweary songs though.

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 14:15

The thing about interpreting literally was in reference to the OP mentioning "Rape Me"

StarlightPrincess Not you. You're not like these other ignorant Young People who wouldn't Know Good Music If It Hit Them In The Face. Grin

xJulesx · 18/02/2011 14:16

Nirvana were an excellent band, I still listen to them now. I used to fancy Kurt Cobain and was gutted when he killed himself.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 14:16

Rihanna and her whips and chains and pelvic thrusts? Madonna and her fellating of Jesus?

Not really suitable for kids either imo.

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 14:17

Would you like to share the positive messages in Rhianna's opus with the rest of the class? Grin

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 14:18

PigValentine- Errrrgh, tell me about it! I'm just glad I have an appreciation of ALL music, not just what the media tells you is 'cool' to like.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 14:18

Kurt was hot.

mozette · 18/02/2011 14:18

In 20 years time bands won't be influenced by acts like Rihanna and x factor guff - its your Kurt Cobain / Nirvana / Morrissey /The Smiths who will continue to be a driving force

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 14:19

Meh, modern R&B is generally shite though. Doesn't have the soul like Marvin Gaye and Aretha's music did. It's all about shaking your arse and acting like a ho.

That's not to say I don't like some of it, but it has no meaning to it. It's mindless drivel!

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/02/2011 14:20

Rihanna's music is upbeat and empowering. Would much rather my little girl was listening to that than the likes of Nirvana and Morrissey. I have a massive issue with Morrissey.

OP posts:
sharbie · 18/02/2011 14:21

some people just don't get it do they Smile

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/02/2011 14:21

mollychambers he was HOT?? he looked as though he needed a wash!

OP posts:
mozette · 18/02/2011 14:21

Pray tell what is your MASSIVE issue with Morrissey???

The fact that he has more talent in his left bum cheek than Rhianna???

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 14:22

Rihanna's music is upbeat and empowering

Upbeat, yes. Empowering? Not a chance.

pagwatch · 18/02/2011 14:22

Hmm. Would I prefer my dd to listen to something less poptastic but more challenging like nirvana. Or ' if you want to get on in life get your tits out and look like you will fuck as nanyang men as it takes' like rhianna.

Gish that's difficult. I would love my dd to be some blokes bitch. No. Really

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/02/2011 14:24

Morrissey causes depression, I have seen two cases of people becoming so obsessed with him that nobody, even in real life, can compare. It's like he brainwashes people.

OP posts:
PigValentine · 18/02/2011 14:24

he was HOT?? he looked as though he needed a wash!

OP, you are not 23. You are my nana Smile

glastocat · 18/02/2011 14:24

Nirvana were fantastic, a truly original talent.

Modern R&B is mostly shite. Rihanna? Beyonce? Pfft.
