to question the sanity of those who worship Kurt Cobain/Nirvana?

I must be missing something.

But why is Kurt Cobain such an 'icon'? Why do people think Nirvana are brilliant?

To me, it sounds like depressing nonsense, and I cannot understand what anybody gets from it. And it appears that some people worship Kurt Cobain. What is there about him to worship? From what I can tell, he was a bit rubbish!

But maybe i just don't 'get' it. I have however just been spoken to very rudely by my aunty when I said that the best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grohl forming the Foo Fighters.

I like Pink - she comes across as a relatively normal person as well.

I never really liked Nirvana (was more of a Jane's Addiction girl), and thought Kurt Cobain killing himself when he'd just had a daughter was staggeringly selfish, so was going to say YANBU.

The I read your Morrisey/Rihanna comparison and now all I can say is WAAAAAHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

So, cheers for that Smile

mozette · 18/02/2011 14:46

I like Pink too - she doesn't feel the need to flash the flesh to sell some records.

DD who is nearly 5 loves Pink & early Kylie (before hotpants)

Normantebbit · 18/02/2011 14:46

Oh my kids tell me to turn The Smiths off and put sodding Disney Princess CD on - sad thing is I'm starting to like it

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 14:46

I don't understand this whole Rihanna thing.

Not so long ago she was a relatively clean cut singer.

Now she is being marketed as some kind of pop slut, all skimpy clothes etc and sexy sexy sexy.

BurningBuntingFlipFlop · 18/02/2011 14:47

Rihanna is one of the worst role models for girls going in my opinion. I had the displeasure to read an interview with her in GQ (was on holiday and it was on a sun lounger) and she was an idiot. I can't believe she sang with eminem on a track glamourising domestic violence ehen she herself had encountered it. She is all about the male attention. Don't you see that? It's the reason she's near naken on every video.

I cried for Kurt too Sad He was beautiful!

tethersend · 18/02/2011 14:47

Pink is a poor man's Peaches.

LostArt · 18/02/2011 14:48

The Smiths are on MTV Rocks now. I'll switch it off though, I don't want depression.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 14:48

Suicide is always selfish Tether.

I think when you get to that point you're either too depressed to care or truly believe that those you love would be better off without you. Sad

He was a very troubled man made worse by drugs.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 18/02/2011 14:49

Hahahahaha. The biggest Morrissey fan I know is also the most annoyingly bright and positive person in the world - a very perky pretty blonde Texan.

I have my issue with Moz as a person - his 'whoops I've been MISQUOTED making xenophobic comments AGAIN' but his lyrics are amazing and uplifting about mundane subjects.

"You have never been in love until you've seen the stars reflect in the reservoirs"

One of my favourite lyrics of all time.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 18/02/2011 14:52

Phew, moz. It worked :)

Now Joy Division. They were a cheerful bunch Grin

ChutesTooNarrow · 18/02/2011 14:53

Grin at PigValentine and LITR who clearly have excellent music tastes unlike Rihanna fans

tethersend · 18/02/2011 14:56

I know Molly, but that's the stumbling block I have in remembering him as a great man. I don't think he was. I think he was just incredibly fucked up. Same with Ian Curtis, as it goes.

Whatnamechange · 18/02/2011 14:58

Rihanna is not a good role model , yes she got through the chris brown ordeal with dignity but I would not like my dc to follow her example every song she sings is about how much she likes sex whilst wearing the most provocative outfits ever ,it does seem like she is asbsoloutely desperate to be seen as sexy and a "bad girl" and is pushing the boundaries further and further it you wonder how low she is going to sink .
Plus her voice has a nails on a blackboard effect on me I literally want to pull
my ears off .

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 15:02

Whatnamechange Agree.

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/02/2011 15:03

I'd rather my daughter admired Rihanna than Kurt Cobain. That's my basic point.

PegsonaNewNose · 18/02/2011 15:06

DDs and I prefer listening to instead of Rihanna-

She has talent and doesn't flash the flesh-

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 15:08

Really? Really?

Because I don't think listening to Kurt Cobain turns you in to a suicidely depressed junkie.

I do think listening to Rihanna, and seeing her vids, could give any kid a very warped view of sex and sexuality.

ChutesTooNarrow · 18/02/2011 15:09

You'd rather your daughter thought writhing in her pants was a better career choice than, you know, actually being talented?

Rihanna doesn't write her music, or lyrics or have any say in what she does. She is a puppet who is very carefully controlled to make money for other people.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 15:09

Pegs - she performed at the Grammy's right?

Had never heard of her but thought she was very good.

PegsonaNewNose · 18/02/2011 15:12

Mollys, Yes!

Discovered her through a friend last year and was amazed .

ArchAndroid is just brilliant.

Shame she doesn't get as much press - She's clever.

pagwatch · 18/02/2011 15:12

If my dd wanted to be someone who lacks talent but writhes around in a lads mag stylee rather than a musician who writes and performs her particular style of music, I would feel like a massive fuck up as a parent.
