to question the sanity of those who worship Kurt Cobain/Nirvana?

I must be missing something.

But why is Kurt Cobain such an 'icon'? Why do people think Nirvana are brilliant?

To me, it sounds like depressing nonsense, and I cannot understand what anybody gets from it. And it appears that some people worship Kurt Cobain. What is there about him to worship? From what I can tell, he was a bit rubbish!

But maybe i just don't 'get' it. I have however just been spoken to very rudely by my aunty when I said that the best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grohl forming the Foo Fighters.

Normantebbit · 18/02/2011 13:41

I find the Foo Fighters irritating

Ormirian · 18/02/2011 13:43

I certainly don't worship Kurt Cobain but I like Nirvana.

MollysChambers · 18/02/2011 13:43

Nirvana were hugely popular at the time and Kurt Cobain was a bit of a poster boy for that time anyway. They were a very good band.

The fact that he died young, at the height of his fame, made him an icon.

fedupofnamechanging · 18/02/2011 13:43

To be fair, one of their songs is good. I've just forgotten which one!

CountessVonKnackerstein · 18/02/2011 13:44

I don't like Nirvana cos they killed the hair bands :)

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 13:44

karmabeliever it was the one and only Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels! I've met LOADS of them, we used to stalk find out from sources what hotel they were staying at and meet them there!

Yep the Great One is back in WWE at the moment, he's such a legend!

Cazza72 · 18/02/2011 13:45

Loved Nirvana ... and also Love Foo Fighters .... Drummers are intrinsically cool ... Taylor Hawkins every bit as great as Dave Grohl!

Ormirian · 18/02/2011 13:45

And to be frank there is so much characterless, thin, flavourless crap in the charts today Nirvana seems even better by comparison.

And yes, I am old but my DC feel the same. JLS FFS? Why?

Panzee · 18/02/2011 13:46

Countess that's my husband's opinion too! He's a proper Aerosmith/Motley Crue etc nut.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 18/02/2011 13:47

flooziesusie · 18/02/2011 13:52

I hate Oasis. Never did understand why anyone could buy into that, that damn noise! Too much going on whiney shite.

I did like SLTS though... it's an era, a movement if you like.

Eddie V is the MAN.

Each to their own init. Grin

Sarsaparilllla · 18/02/2011 13:52

I love Nirvana, it takes me back to being about 17 :) They were influential at the time, I think it's definitely an age thing

I don't worship Kurt Cobain but he's become an idol because he died young, loads of famous people who die before their time is more likely to be seen as an icon than someone who grows old, gray and chubby

CountessVonKnackerstein · 18/02/2011 13:52

panzee tell your DH he has great taste in music and that there is a rumour of Motley Crüe and Poison touring together Grin

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 18/02/2011 13:52

The Grin was about the drummer comment btw.

Is there anything about now that's a patch on Nirvana? Or The Smiths? Or Black Sabbath even?

Whatnamechange · 18/02/2011 13:52

Nirvana were amazing and their music reminds me of being nineteen and at college sitting on the grass in the sun with not a care in the world (those were the days)
but not everyone likes the same thing , and I don't worship anyone I don't know .

Bloodymary · 18/02/2011 13:54

Normantebbit Oh yes I agree.
I vividly remember the day Hendrix died, and I believe Lou Reeds track 'perfect day' refers to heroin Sad
Agree with you on REM.

Normantebbit · 18/02/2011 13:56

I hate Oasis too. Aping The Beatles, lyrics just nonsense

AllHailDaddyPig · 18/02/2011 13:59

I'm 21.

I just think that they are so depressing, it just sounds like a guitar and a whole lot of whining!

I have lots of family members who like Nirvana and other music similar to that and they are all depressed! Somehow think they'd be much happier if they were listening to Britney or even some Motown!

It's just so pretentious, and a negative influence on people.

smoggii · 18/02/2011 13:59

YABU.

I sobbed my heart out when KC died, I was 14 and loved the music and the thought that there was no chance of more music from him was just devastating.

People sobbed when Take That split up and there was a chance that they would get back together and then they did, not possible for Nirvana, but they still had a right to sob because there was a chance that really was the end.

At 14 i guess i can also say that I worshipped the music and the man, not because he was a drug addict but because he was an incredibly talented man from a relatively underpriveledged background who made something of himself which is something to aspire to - he was also a warning of what can happen when success comes too fast and what can happen when you get involved with drugs for whatever reason.

I also worshipped Courtney Love... because she was an incredibly determined and talented (IMO) woman.

Both KC and CL had faults (mainly drug addiction) but show me someone who doesn't.

Michael Jackson was a drug addict he's hero worshipped around the world.

Dave Grohl has had a phenomenal career and he's incredibly talented, for me his music lacks the edge, power and urgency that was in Nirvana's music. But that's just my opinion.

Normantebbit · 18/02/2011 14:00

Yes that song Perfect Day is so sad. It gives you a window into how it must feel. Shame 'the BBC murdered it, but there you go...

I would love to gave seen Hendrix- my boss saw him at a festival on the Isle of White and would bang on about it -every- -week- now and then

Panzee · 18/02/2011 14:00

CountessVonKnackerstein we saw Motley Crue a few years back, he has shown me the way of 80s metal! I would love a Poison/Crue tour. :o

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 14:02

No-one is happier listening to Britney Grin

I know everything after it is pretty crap, but I love love love Definitely Maybe. And the Whatever single.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 18/02/2011 14:03

I am of the opinion that if someone lived a clean-living, respectable and long life, their music is probably not worth listening to.

Musicians should not be "role models" - they should make music. Most of the classical composers were total shit bags as well.

"When did mediocrity and banality become a good image for your children? I want my children listening to people who fucking rocked! I don't care if they died in pools of their own vomit! I want someone who plays from his fucking heart!" Thank you Bill Hicks.

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/02/2011 14:03

Thanks allhail that's my point. It's just so bloody depressing, don't they have a song called 'Rape Me'

Just can't understand what people see in that kind of depressing music, same as My Chemical Romance - they are a BAD influence on people.

I'm 23 btw to those who asked.

This is EXACTLY how I feel! I want my children to grow up listening to real music, not this X Factor conveyor belt shite that's churned out these days!
