to question the sanity of those who worship Kurt Cobain/Nirvana?

I must be missing something.

But why is Kurt Cobain such an 'icon'? Why do people think Nirvana are brilliant?

To me, it sounds like depressing nonsense, and I cannot understand what anybody gets from it. And it appears that some people worship Kurt Cobain. What is there about him to worship? From what I can tell, he was a bit rubbish!

But maybe i just don't 'get' it. I have however just been spoken to very rudely by my aunty when I said that the best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grohl forming the Foo Fighters.

How old are you? Probably the wrong age to 'get it'

pinkstinks · 18/02/2011 13:06

i dont 'get' justin beiber. Each to their own and all that...

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 13:06

It's personal taste, isn't it? Like all music. It's context as well - they were kind of representative of a particular place and time in music / society / etc.

I do love Nirvana Smile and I'm quite sane. I don't know why you would question the sanity of people who like them, they were a massively successful rock band, it's hardly a weird, unusual interest.

How old are you, out of interest?!

MySweetPrince · 18/02/2011 13:08

YABU - I liked Nirvana, love Foo Fighters, different people have different tastes don't they....personally can't stand X factor types
but know others who love it.....live and let live.

iMum · 18/02/2011 13:09

Ah Sequins! you sound just like your mum!

Really tho, not worth bothering about, horses for course eh!

fwiw I have a very varied musical taste and happen to like a fair amount of Nirvana and Hole but not a whole lot of Foo Fighters

my musical heart will always belong to

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 13:11

YANBU, as you are entitled to your opinion... but Nirvana are fantastic, and the Foo Fighters can't hold a candle to them!

jaffacake79 · 18/02/2011 13:15

Eddie Vedder for me. Grin

Have to say that you sound just like my Mum! About 15 years ago! :)

Fwiw, I cannot stand manufactured pop and utter tripe such as X Factor and their ilk, but that's just my pov.

Bloodymary · 18/02/2011 13:17

Well I certainly do not worship Kurt Cobain, and I would not refer to him as an 'icon' as he was well into heroin.
Tho I really like their music.
I can remember when they were first around in the 'grunge' days, and I was gutted when I learnt that he had shot himself, nobody should go like that.

Bloodymary · 18/02/2011 13:19

By the way I am 56.
My generation grew up with amazing music Smile

Punkatheart · 18/02/2011 13:21

Read his diaries. I don't worship him but I do admire his talent and his expressiveness.

CornflowerB · 18/02/2011 13:22

Well to quote Louis Armstrong 'If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know'
Still, more a Chilli Peppers girl myself...

buttonmooncup · 18/02/2011 13:27

Love their music but I certainly don't worship him - he was a drug addict and a wife beater. It's often the way when rock stars die young though. If he was still here now he's be a washed up old rocker Paul McCartney and no-one would worship him.

fedupofnamechanging · 18/02/2011 13:29

When I hear Nirvana it takes me back to a very specific time in my life. I can almost taste that time iykwim. for that reason I will always have a soft spot for Nirvana. People who worship other people (celebrities/pop/rock stars) are emotionally stunted imo.

MissyKLo · 18/02/2011 13:31

I like their music but don't really have much of an opinion on him

Each to their own

I don't get why people worship anyone! That is odd - why worship people and go mad screamy cryer over them? There are people I admire but to worship other people is quite sad I think

iMum · 18/02/2011 13:33

I did get all overcome at the O2 2 years ago when seeing Leonard Cohen-I did scream, I love you Len-but I think, under the circs that it was ok.

jaffacake79 · 18/02/2011 13:34

karmabeliever that's exactly how I feel! Nirvana transports me back to being 15, still at school, just properly getting into music, and having my first proper boyfriend. For some people their memories are triggered by smell, taste etc but for me it's music. Most key events in my life have a soundtrack and hearing them will take me right back there.

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 13:35

I burst out crying when I met my favourite wrestler. I couldn't even talk!

StarlightPrincess · 18/02/2011 13:36

I'm exactly the same. There's certain bands I can listen to which transports me back to being 16 again.

Merle · 18/02/2011 13:37

I love the music. SLTS would be one of my desert island discs.

I've never understood the cult of Kurt. I saw a program ont'telly and there were people who made shrines and lit candles for him every day. Idolotry at its worst, I think.

Sad to say but by the end he was a junkie who killed himself because he couldn't face the rehab that his wife had booked him into. Not a great role model, then.

Normantebbit · 18/02/2011 13:38

Bloodymary - plenty of your generation's pop stars were massively into drugs... Lou Reed, The Beatles, Keith Richards.

It takes me back to being 16 and the bands I love/d Sonic Youth, Pavement, The Pixies, Throwing Muses, REM, Sugar...

Many great people live imperfect lives.

Normantebbit · 18/02/2011 13:40

And I would love to see Leonard Cohen. He js one of my heroes.

Panzee · 18/02/2011 13:40

The Foo Fighters is led by a man who was only good enough to be the drummer in Nirvana. That is all. :o

newwave · 18/02/2011 13:41

imum

Thank you very much for the link to SoM, very good. Lucretia, my reflection is awsome. "dum dum bullets and shoot to kill" :o

fedupofnamechanging · 18/02/2011 13:41

Who was it Starlight? My boys inform me that The Rock is back doing WWE. I must admit to a soft spot for him as he was always my DS favourite.

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 13:41

And the fourth or fifth drummer at that Grin
