to question the sanity of those who worship Kurt Cobain/Nirvana?

I must be missing something.

But why is Kurt Cobain such an 'icon'? Why do people think Nirvana are brilliant?

To me, it sounds like depressing nonsense, and I cannot understand what anybody gets from it. And it appears that some people worship Kurt Cobain. What is there about him to worship? From what I can tell, he was a bit rubbish!

But maybe i just don't 'get' it. I have however just been spoken to very rudely by my aunty when I said that the best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grohl forming the Foo Fighters.

Why are so many songs now about flaunting tits and arse and being hot and stuff. It's so fucking boring!

NinthWave · 18/02/2011 19:30

Kittychat but what about the Babooshka video!

redpanda13 · 18/02/2011 19:34

The feeling I get when I turn up the volume for the intro to How Soon is Now is as far from depression as it is possible to be!

southeastastra · 18/02/2011 19:34

i agree with you ormirian but hoping this government will bring out a passion of some sort, if not then i will be depressed

mozette · 18/02/2011 19:40

I am always amazed when people say "The Smiths are depressing" when they are far from it

southeastastra · 18/02/2011 19:44

my mum moaned when i played the smiths - she hated morrissey's voice

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/02/2011 19:46

OP, I wouldnt say it was an age thing. You basically have a different taste in music. You and many millions of people out there much prefer RNB and the like (no idea why though ) But many millions also prefer something on the heavier side.

Neither is right or wrong. It's whatever floats your boat isnt it?

PigValentine · 18/02/2011 21:17

I love Pulp lyrics, and also the stern and inexplicable instruction in the sleeve notes; "please do not read the lyrics while listening to the recordings"

If you like songs about sex, OP, you can do worse than Pulp!

harpsichordcarrier · 18/02/2011 21:18

I am seeing Pulp in the summer!

mozette · 18/02/2011 21:21
I was there and they ROCKED!

OMG are you saying that people of different generations like different music?! Wow! I never new that!

Personally I think Rhianna needs to talk to whoever it us who is responsible for the atrocities she wears/sings.

My current fav is 30 Seconds to Mars but I will listen to pretty much everything from Metallica to Crowded House and really have a soft spot for Avril Lavigne, now there is a talented female artist who doesn't need to get her tits out for attention, unlike Rhianna.

Does liking Avril mean I am old or young now?

Aseaandthreestars · 18/02/2011 21:43

Ooh, Pink Glove! Someone put that on a mix tape for me, haven't heard it in years (lost the tape ages ago) ( still have friend).

I like Nirvana, their album 'Nevermind' was brilliant, but think Kurt Cobain was a self-obsessed and selfish man, no matter how many demons he was fighting, or his addictions. he took his own life and left his daughter behind

harpsichordcarrier · 18/02/2011 22:21

wotcha lockets

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 18/02/2011 22:22

I'm probably over-thinking this but commercial pap sung by producers' puppets is ultimately more depressing because it's so disposable and the artist who performs it usually has such a short career - and one that doesn't tend to end happily - that any pleasure you get from listening to the song is transitory. I love a bit of cheesy pop but I can't listen to Hit Me Baby One More Time without getting a bit sad about Britney. A better and even sadder example would be Milli Vanilli perhaps.

If an artist has set the agenda for their work and managed it with integrity and direction - then no matter what their personal failings were and how their lives panned out, there is a richer experience and pleasure to be had.

I was not a fan of the Doors but in When You're Strange, Jim Morrison's dad (who Jim HATED) said something about his son having a unique talent that he expressed without compromise. That bit really moved me - that he recognised for all the many faults of JM - he did give everything to his music and art and that would endure far beyond his death.

harpsichordcarrier · 18/02/2011 22:25

Yes, beautifully put Tondy
Do you mind me calling you that?
You talk a lot of sense but your name is too long Grin

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 18/02/2011 22:29

I think that's a bit rich coming from someone with a full SIX syllables. Grin

But yes.

I'm a bit upset no-one calls me it IRL.
