I was thinking last night about all the different trends we had at school and how they are nothing compared to today's (iPhones pandora bracelets etc). To start off a few that I can remeber from my school days , naf co 54 coats ( nasty and cheap looking but cost a fortune) every other person in the school que had one.
Plastic dummies worn as necklaces (weird one that)
bleached fringes so ugly but we thought we looked great.
Light up trainers
all of which got banned after a while .

pixiie boots
studded jackets
wearing bin liners as dresses
safety pins trough your ears
back combing your hair so you looked like you had been plugged into a light socket.

Remember loads of these Grin

At primary school we all wanted perms (my mum woludn't let me have one, though), had Wham school bags, wore ankle socks in luminous colours, collected Garbage Pail cards... and ear muffs were a big fashion thing in the winter for a few years Grin

At secondary school, it was cool to have a plastic bag instead of a school bag, but it had to be a 'cool' drawstring one from Benetton, Shelleys Shoes, JD Sports or Nike Hmm Grin.

We had loads of funny fashion phases. In my first year at school it was the acid house era and the really cool boys had smiley face patterns cut into their hair Hmm. We loved Naf/Chevignon/other horrible, cheap-looking French sports brands. I also went thtough a phase where I used to wear dollar sign earrings and scarlet lipstick a la Monie Love .

Then there was a lengthy MC Hammer trousers with Kickers phase (bonus points if you had loads of the little leather Kickers tags attached to your shoes) or Wallabies, accessorized ith miniature Head bags. Then original Nike Air Max with the luminous pink/orange tick, worn with 'pin-tucked' jeans or Champion jogging bottoms. And an awful phase of wearing cream Palladiums with dunagrees or all in one 'playsuit' shorts- suit-thingies. I used to slick my hair up into the tightest Croydon facelift-stylee ponytail imaginable to top it all. Stylish! Grin

There was a massive craze for American Wrestling among the boys in the first half of my secondary school years. We also all used to rush home to watch Dance Energy Grin

We did the dummy thing. Also

NormanTheForeman · 14/02/2011 10:05

GentleOtter you must be about the same age as me! I also remember clackers (got banned where I was too), and I had one of those hula hoop and ball things. I can't remember what they were called.

And lots of people had Donny Osmond stuff. In fact, I remember the girl next door got a Donny Osmond t shirt for her birthday, and a smiley pendant, and a pair of platform shoes.

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 10:05

Wallabees

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 10:06

LOl at mini Head bags, yep, I did that too.

LilJMc · 14/02/2011 10:08

That material that changed colour when hot (terrible idea for sweaty teens), sometimes paired with neon and black knee length shorts

jamfran · 14/02/2011 10:08

Donny hat and badges

Bay City Rollers stuff

Adam and the Ants stripe (done with surgical tape) across my nose

Harrington jackets and Fred Perry polo shirts, with Madness, Ska etc., badges.

Mod parka

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 14/02/2011 10:08

we had a NAFF.CO 54 jacket backlash at our school, anyone daft enough to wear it would get

'nanny Annie fishy fanny, condoms only 54p'
chanted at them Confused

bigTillyMint · 14/02/2011 10:08

At Primary we didn't have uniform, so.....
Loons
Checked everything (Bay City ROllersWink)
Polyester and nylon everything
Boys brown Y-fronts with yellow piping (can you tell where I was looking in PE lessons?!)
Adidas footie bags
PNJ's (polo neck jumpers!)

BendyBob · 14/02/2011 10:10

Ah yes! Lace and raggy bits of material in mega sprayed permed curly hair.

Lace fingerles gloves. All very Madonna 'Like A Virgin'. Pixie boots and layers of petticoats hanging down. I must've looked like a ragbag of bits of old material Grin

Couldn't get away with all of it at school though.

Taping the top 20 off the radio and trying to edit out the talking between records.

JennyRobyn · 14/02/2011 10:10

I had the Electric blue wallabees..but they had to be worn with big baggy dungerees and a hooded jumper.

Also had a pair of purple suede boots at around the same time and a pair of boots called Seargeant Peppers...that were a cheaper version of kickers

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 14/02/2011 10:12

Oh and little see through plastic dummys in strange colours for some reason

cumbria81 · 14/02/2011 10:12

Everyone had one of these at primary school. Skip-its, I think they were called

Limara · 14/02/2011 10:15

Harrington Jackets
Robin-hood/pixie Boots
Tartan/Rupert bear trousers
Small plait at the nape of the neck
Jumpers rolled over at the waist
Court shoes
Studio Line mousse hair product
Inset hairspray

JennyRobyn · 14/02/2011 10:15

Deely boppers, that were on a blue band and came in heart star and ball shapes, and were either Gold or silver glitter.

We used to go out to play with those things on and thought we were the bee's knee's!!

Keyrings that were shaped like 50,20,10,5,and 1 pound notes that were linked at the corner.

Two ball was all the rage and a tennis ball in the leg of your mums old tights that you would hit against the wall.

These were all junior school.

BunnyWunny · 14/02/2011 10:16

Does anyone remember those pencil cases that were shaped like a calculator- big and black and plastic with lots of compartments inside and hinged at the top? everyone had one!

Tanith · 14/02/2011 10:17

I remember the girls at my primary school playing the Maori Stick game during one summer. I wasn't old enough to do it and I don't remember it too clearly - just lines of girls chanting and throwing sticks to each other in various weird and wonderful ways.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 14/02/2011 10:19

Jenny, I think you must be the same age as me. I also remember wearing double breasted shirts and chelsea boots (ala Gary Numan).
Fish tail parkas which came from Lawrence Corner (an army and navy surplus store).
Branded track shits - Sergio Tacchini was very popular. I didn't have one and was very sad.

Limara · 14/02/2011 10:20

ooh i just remembered, Pepe 'Doris' jeans, the one's with the zip up the side, tight and at the ankle!

fedupofnamechanging · 14/02/2011 10:22

Over the knee black socks, worn with school skirt rolled over at the waist to make it shorter.

Boys wore puffa jackets, chinos and had flat tops.

School tie with the knot as small as possible and the thin end on the outside, with the fat end tucked inside of school shirt, so completely out of sight.

Limara · 14/02/2011 10:23

FOAM PADDED CARDS!

GentleOtter · 14/02/2011 10:24

Norman Grin

Calculators were a relatively new fankled thing and slightly sniffed upon. We used slide rules.

Digital watches were worn by some, platforms, long hair for the boys, paisley pattern nylon shirts with big pointy collars.

A small transistor radio was uber cool and extra kudos for listening to Radio Caroline.

Limara · 14/02/2011 10:25

Swatch watches

JennyRobyn · 14/02/2011 10:26

Kreecher i am 36, Was at school during the 80's and left early 90's

BunnyWunny · 14/02/2011 10:28

You were only in if you had-

A Head bag for PE.
Chelsea boots or kitten heels with socks,
A Duran Duran flicked hair do,
Your skirt rolled up to within an inch of your knickers,
Blue eyeliner and frosted lipstick,
Were stinking of dewberry (or impulse) or if you were rich Lulu.
Had 2 earrings in each ear,
Listened to James Whale until 2 every morning,
Had tippex painted slogans allover your pencil case,
And most importantly yo had to swear a lot!
