I was thinking last night about all the different trends we had at school and how they are nothing compared to today's (iPhones pandora bracelets etc). To start off a few that I can remeber from my school days , naf co 54 coats ( nasty and cheap looking but cost a fortune) every other person in the school que had one.
Plastic dummies worn as necklaces (weird one that)
bleached fringes so ugly but we thought we looked great.
Light up trainers
all of which got banned after a while .

Boots worn unzipped and turned out in the style of Madonna in DSS.

How cool were we?

nickschick · 14/02/2011 09:26

Lace in our hair, fingerless gloves and little russian doll things fastened anywhere ......benetton bags and pod shoes.

GentleOtter · 14/02/2011 09:32

trolls on the top of your pencil

clackers (which got banned)

hula hoop things which went around your ankle and had a ball on the end. (banned)

massive badges the size of a saucer with either Donny Osmond or Michael Jackson.

piprabbit · 14/02/2011 09:35

Those weird plastic bags - kind of like a curly wurly. I think you bought them flat and then popped the sides together. Then, because they were full of holes, you had to put your stuff inside a normal plastic bag to stop it falling through the holes. So the 'fashion' bit was finding the trendiest shopping bag to put inside your holey bag - IIRC Next and Benneton were popular.

woopsidaisy · 14/02/2011 09:35

Wow! I can't believe you all had so much freedom with your uniforms!
Our school was really strict on what you could and couldn't wear. We had to wear [http://www.arnotts.ie/Product/Mount-Anville-montessori-smock/302323/200500100320100 smocks]] over our uniform until we were 12!
So the trends I remember were neon elastics on your train tracks, covering your books in benetton ads pictures, and pencil cases that had little compartments. Also swapping "fancy paper" and stickers.
I sound like I went to school in 1900!

woopsidaisy · 14/02/2011 09:36

Sorry, that should be smock.

piprabbit · 14/02/2011 09:37

No.7 lilac sparkly lipstick.

Body Shop White Musk perfume.

Legwarmers.

Boys with 'bird-shit' hair (i.e. dotted with loads of bleached spots).

crazycatlady · 14/02/2011 09:38

This is so weird, I don't remember any of these Confused

Let me think...err..

  • Game Boys
  • Friendship bracelets
  • pretending to be anorexic/self-harming...
  • having a 'crush' on an older girl
  • rolling up your school skirt to show off your legs and making it look like you're wearing a nappy/colostomy bag

(Girls' public school, early 90s, hideous)

crazycatlady · 14/02/2011 09:39

Ahh, pip you have just reminded me... Fuzzy Peach (bluergh!)

piprabbit · 14/02/2011 09:39

Just spotted the fluorescent socks - I'd forgotten those, but they had to be worn odd.

piprabbit · 14/02/2011 09:41

crazycat, if you had Game Boys, I suspect you are simply too young... we played a lot of card games at my school and fainted with excitement over Rubiks cubes.

southeastastra · 14/02/2011 09:42

bags that were like minature suitcases on a long strap, awful see through hard plastic bags, casuals, big hair, legwarmers

JennyRobyn · 14/02/2011 09:49

Southeast, I remember the bags. It was called a Gear Box, In fact i still had mine up until a few years ago...think i got rid when we moved.

SarahStrattonHasNiceBears · 14/02/2011 09:50

Lace in our hair, fingerless gloves and little russian doll things fastened anywhere ......benetton bags and pod shoes. yep

Fluroescent socks yep

  • rolling up your school skirt to show off your legs and making it look like you're wearing a nappy/colostomy bag yep but I never clocked the colostomy bag thing

Fake tanned legs with vaseline to make them greasy shine.

Pixie boots
Legwarmers
Lace and bows
Rara skirts
Puffball skirts
Scrunch dried 'big' hair
Sun-In
Tiny pigtail plait at the nape of my neck
Tippex sniffing
Smelly rubbers

I also started a trend for wearing bloomers under the school skirt. They stuck out about 4 inches from the bottom. I was not popular with the Staff. Heh. They were banned after a couple of weeks when they realised it was spreading to the Lower School :(

God I must have looked a sight Confused

JennyRobyn · 14/02/2011 09:52

SecretSlattern · 14/02/2011 09:56

A mixture from Primary and Secondary

White Musk and Dewberry "perfume" from Body Shop, Bennetton bags, snap on friendship bracelet things, trolls, Naff Co 54 coats, Kickers, Puffa jackets (not a good look on me - looked like the Michelin man), black shoes or boots with wooden block heels, Global hypercolour t-shirts, making friendship bracelets out of random bits of string and a safety pin, the dummy on a string thing, black velvety floppy hats with a huge black velvety "rose" on the front

Am sure will think of more

SecretSlattern · 14/02/2011 09:57

Oh yes and the legendary shag bands lol

mamadiva · 14/02/2011 09:57

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 10:01

Great thread - trip down memory lane! Sorry if repeating but at my secondary school we had:

White Musk/Dewberry
River Island plaggy bags
Bennetton duffle bags
Naff Co jackets
Hooded tops and ridiculous baggy trews
PONY trainer boots with the tongues sticking out
Grolsch bottle tops on your DM shoes (for the Bros fans)
Long thick school socks pushed down to ankle length, would take hours to perfect the look
Gel spray on your fringe

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 10:01

Also green suede lace up shoes with I think , a floral trim. Wallabees or something?

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 10:02

FRom Primary school I remember Fergie bows and banana clips!
