I was thinking last night about all the different trends we had at school and how they are nothing compared to today's (iPhones pandora bracelets etc). To start off a few that I can remeber from my school days , naf co 54 coats ( nasty and cheap looking but cost a fortune) every other person in the school que had one.
Plastic dummies worn as necklaces (weird one that)
bleached fringes so ugly but we thought we looked great.
Light up trainers
all of which got banned after a while .

spooktrain

we used to do something called "chicken scratches" where you would scratch off a patch of skin on your hand. Still not quite sure why.......

also knew some girls who would carve the initials of a paramour on their arm with a compass. Mmmmm, classy....

GrimmaTheNome · 14/02/2011 11:44

I'm the same vintage as GentleOtter and Norman, with clackers and the ball-on-a-hoop thing (I had a terrible job finding one for DD because of not knowing what they might be called!)

My friends were all into either Donny, David Cassidy or the Bay City rollers. I was sniffy about all those, and was very Hmm when a friend excitedly worked out that she and 5 of her mates could all marry Donny!

Charlie and Tramp 'perfume' filled the air...

We used to say "get off" but then on a school trip we met some kids from "Up North" who thought "get off" meant "have it off" so they thought we were all proper slags (aged 13 Confused)

Whatnamechange · 14/02/2011 11:49

Does anyone remember the sweatershop? I got one out of my birthday money and it was hideous but at the time thought I was it.
And tiny backpacks at the school disco we all had our tiny back packs with our satin shirts/ skirts combo also had spice girl style platform boots my best friend broke her ankle on hers and I was so jealous she got a plaster cast for everyone to sign.
Kappa tracksuits with the poppers on the side the lads use to try and rip them off , who thinks of these things! ?

Said tracksuits tucked into slouch socks
MASSIVE gold creole earrings

Square bangles
Tommy girl and Versace Jeans perfume

Think I was a bit of a ned!

TotemPole · 14/02/2011 11:52

Did anyone else make badges out of crisp packets?

You put them in the oven to shrink them then stuck a safety pin on the back.

I blame it on Blue Peter.Blush

Bobby65 · 14/02/2011 11:55

Tartan Kilts with massive safety pins - I wasn't allowed to wear them, and over the knee socks.
Also constantly pretending to be Danny and Sandy from Grease, and doing all the dances, obvioulsy talking late 70's here.

briefcasewanker · 14/02/2011 11:57

Warner Bros. jumpers
Hair Mascara
Tamagochi's
Tracksuit bottoms with 'poppers' down the legs
Kickers/Pod Shoes
Later Rockport shoes
Ellese school bags
Wearing about 6 pairs of socks at the same time with said Kickers, and all laces must be tucked in not tied so that shoes are always about to fall off.

God yes! Forgot about the sovereign rings!

They were bloody hideous and you had to have as many rings on as possible.

Mr T eat your heart out!

briefcasewanker · 14/02/2011 12:08

You know i actually saved up my money to go to Argos and buy a sovereign ring, i was sooo happy. Grin

AngryGnome · 14/02/2011 12:11

bagged and tagged
I am from oop north, and I thought get off meant snogged - having read your post I now realise that my friends may have had far more exciting relationships than I originally thought!

I went to a girls school and at Christmas, tampons would always appear decoratively strewn on the school xmas tree. Nice.

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 12:12

Never had a sovereign ring but T bar chains we de regour round my parts. Elizabeth Duke was drooled over!

TwoWeeSausages · 14/02/2011 12:15

briefcase you must be roughly the same age as me.

Also remember trying to pick up the pirate radio stations and phoning with 'shout outs'

piratecat · 14/02/2011 12:20

Baggedandtagged, omg the game you mentioned 'raps' was hideous, it bloody hurt, and was ridiculously stupid!

sandyballs · 14/02/2011 12:23

Soul jeans with a white line down the side
Farrahs
Lyle and Scott diamond jumpers
Pringle jumpers
Ruffled 'new romantic' blouses

This thread is great as I have been getting a bit annoyed with my DD's lately and their current 'fads', i'd forgotten I was exactly the same.

briefcasewanker · 14/02/2011 12:25

We used to play raps and scrapes
Used to take in permanant (permo!) markers and 'tag' the school

A lot of girls had awful spiral perms too, with so much mousse on their hair was crispy.
Big bumpy fringes
Lads all had curtains, later changed to 'westlife hair'

briefcasewanker · 14/02/2011 12:26

TWS I started highschool in 1996 i think.

Jins · 14/02/2011 12:27

knee length/calf length skirts
Ankle strap shoes
Pixie boots
footless tights
space dust
lois jeans
clogs with 4 inch heels and 'wooden' soles
blue eyeliner
black or blue nail polish

there were many more

DrNortherner · 14/02/2011 12:28

I started high school in 1986.

I remember Flintstone jeans. Stone washed with images of The Flintstones on the thighs. WFT?!

Also rugby shirts and coloured jeans. I had a green pair and a rust colured pair.

Would wear my boyfriends cricket jumper alot too with my ski pants.

Also highwaisted light was baggy jeans with an illuminous belt.

TwoWeeSausages · 14/02/2011 12:31

I was 97 briefcase

Also remember one year all the boys in my school bleaching their hair.

Was quite funny as a few of them hadn't done it properly and haf varying shades of orange and yellow hair!

StarlightPrincess · 14/02/2011 12:32

At secondary school our main trends were...

Schott or Avirex hoodies

Slick hair- basically gelled within an inch of its life, pulled back into a side ponytail/bun and then slicked into place with a special brush and secured with millions of clips

Sovreign rings, big earrings and big curb link bracelets (called chaps for some reason)

The latest Nokia phone customised with a special face, lights and ringtone

Skintight school trousers

Adidas trackie bottoms with one leg rolled up for some unknown reason for P.E

Boys wearing their trousers round their arses

Black ballet pumps worn with brightly coloured socks underneath

I shudder when I think back on it!
