For fun which trends did you have at school

I was thinking last night about all the different trends we had at school and how they are nothing compared to today's (iPhones pandora bracelets etc). To start off a few that I can remeber from my school days , naf co 54 coats ( nasty and cheap looking but cost a fortune) every other person in the school que had one.
Plastic dummies worn as necklaces (weird one that)
bleached fringes so ugly but we thought we looked great.
Light up trainers
all of which got banned after a while .

Asteria - were we at the same school??

I'm impressed. There is no way we could have worn this stuff to my school.

I am having deja vu whenever I do into a high street fashion shop now - harem pants, Banarama/Dexy's denim with cropped and torn jerseys, spray-on jeans, leggings, long t-shirts and jerseys and pixie or military boots, it's all there.
I used to laugh at my mum's comment 'I wore that last time it was in fashion' but it's so true.

We all wore patchouli oil to school and those Yasser Arafat scarves, worn back to front with the point to the front. Cool or what! Grin

I didn't have it, but that Kim Wilde dark roots, blonde tips thing actually seems quite practical now. Suppose it's not the same if the roots are actually grey though....

Jamaica I bet we're about the same age :) I'd forgotten all about those Karma bracelets. I had the silver ones and pink also if I recall. Oh I was cool and no mistake!

Ooh Panini stickers. I blame my obsessive cataloguing of books and CDs as an adult with my love of organising piles of stickers into swaps and keeps.

Then when older

Rimmel make-up (heather shimmer was my fave).

B&H fags when they only cost 99p for ten and you could buy them with your quid dinner money although I moved onto Embassy for the points after a while.

Army surplus coats and bags and customising our DMs by painting stuff on them and wearing red, gold and green laces.

Asteria · 17/02/2011 18:15

Candleshoe - did you go to school in North Yorkshire?

mumsgotatum · 17/02/2011 20:54

Oh Rimmel heather shimmer...takes me back

Does anyone remember in the 80s when BROS were massive...do you remember those really think black elastic belts that were in fashion

mumsgotatum · 17/02/2011 20:55

'fame' skirts - grey sweathshirt material drop waisted.
espedrills (sp?)
Pepe 'Betty' jeans!! (god I'd forgotten, how to make your arse look huge!)
wicker basket for a school bag - I thought I was so COOL!
Those chinese style coats made out of a quilt!
Boots cucumber cleanser, toner and moisturiser.
impulse body spray
Charlie perfume
Binatone tape recorders
Adam and the Ants!!
Haircut 100
Human League
Chips and gravy for 40p

I'm getting carried away Blush

mumsgotatum · 17/02/2011 22:06

OMG! Boots cucumber cleanser
Body shop white musk (sigh) my old bessie mate used to wear that

sharbie · 17/02/2011 23:18

anne french cleansing milk

lololizzy · 18/02/2011 01:29

bright purple eyeshadow from Medicare (which later became Superdrug) and Twilight Teaser from Boots...really nasty Constance Carroll nail varnish from the market.
The boys had a weird fad of cutting their school ties clean in half. Then gluing back together at a slightly jaunty angle!

jugglingjo · 18/02/2011 13:19

Ah yes, Sharbie - I remember that as being quite good stuff !

hymie · 18/02/2011 14:19

Flairs and Doctor Martins boots...always wore the flairs at half mast with trousers that had 10 button holes in the waist.

To top that off the fashion was to carry all your books for the day in an old carrier bag so everyone could see where your Mum shopped and they could have a laugh at you :)
