I was thinking last night about all the different trends we had at school and how they are nothing compared to today's (iPhones pandora bracelets etc). To start off a few that I can remeber from my school days , naf co 54 coats ( nasty and cheap looking but cost a fortune) every other person in the school que had one.
Plastic dummies worn as necklaces (weird one that)
bleached fringes so ugly but we thought we looked great.
Light up trainers
all of which got banned after a while .

did anyone else put a crisp packet under the grill till it shrunk and wear it as a badge?

sharbie · 16/02/2011 17:48

CheerfulYank · 16/02/2011 18:17

Yo-yos, skater pants (jeans with enormous legs), tiny shrunken "baby" t-shirts worn with said huge pants.

veg2grow · 16/02/2011 18:26

Remember the long white socks that you rolled down to your ankle?

My school did not allow it and when I was caught for the 2nd time in a day..the teacher rolled my socks down by an inch and then drew around my leg and pulled my socks by up!

Of course for the rest of the day my socks stayed up as it was soooooo embarrassing have great big black pen around my legs

Boarding School 1st - 5th Year:
Body Shop Perfume - Dewberry and White Musk.
Pop Swatch Watches.
Chin-length Bobs (with a shaved bit at the back - undercut I think it was called, but that was only after a really scary girl came to board who had it. She had been expelled from every school in Brighton and had a boyfriend who had left school and lived in his car, she was amazing!)
Strapless ball dresses made out of electric blue raw silk with huge pufball skirts - preferably worn with doc martins.
Friendship bracelets that we made ourselves with knotted thread.
501's with lots of rips in.
Penny Loafers with a penny in the bit at the front.
Velvet Scrunchies.
6th Form:
Doc Martens, holey tights, really short tight skirts and big baggy grey benetton polo neck - usually worn with a bad attitude and a little silver tin of hash concealed about my person. Until I discovered Clubbing - used to go to a place called The Empire that had a night called Sugar Shack. All the big DJ's of the day played there (Tall Paul, Boy George, Sasha, Digweed et al) and then I tended to wear flimsy bits of scarf, those little chain mail tops that came to a point at the belly button or just some underwear - if only I had appreciated my body more!

Jellykat · 16/02/2011 18:55

Ours were the stumpiest fattest ties you could create.

Oh and bearing in mind we are talking the '70s - high waisted flared polyester flares, with patch side pockets halfway down your leg, and tight see-thro' cheesecloth shirts (that were eventually banned)

mumzy · 16/02/2011 19:05

Was at secondary school up North in late 80's:
putting streaks into your hair using food colouring
mens blazers/tweed jackets worn by girls
skater skirts with DMs
lovebite worn as accessories
pastel coloured pringle jumpers
oversized Tshirts/jumpers
distressed denim
smoking methols
snakebites(cider and lager)
pernod and black(currant)
gin and pep(permint)
cider and black(currant)
The Smiths
The Cure
Joy Division

Tiny tiny tiny strands coming out of the front of your hair when you had a ponytail.

Jelly sandals (primary school)

Listening to tapes (Take THat, Spice Girls, Aqua) in class on a walkman held on your lap and threaded underneath your jumper

IreneHeron · 16/02/2011 20:57

When we were young teens we all had those awful reversible sweatshirts with things like Pooh on or that eighties paint flecked design.

Later we all just put on Dewberry perfume and had henna in our hair and boys and girls wore trench coats from charity shops and DMs. I remember the shame people would feel at school if their mum had got hold of their DMs and polished the scuff marks off.

Vallhala · 16/02/2011 21:14

jugglingjo · 16/02/2011 21:25

Crazy crazes -

Some hard ball things on a string you banged together (possibly got banned when I was really young - the first craze I remember)
Think conkers were also banned - remember all the kids trying so hard to get the conkers out of the trees, throwing sticks into the branches Ha, ha, ha !
Am constantly amazed to see conkers lying where they fall these days !
Clapping games too from my first school.

At my next school everyone was into "French elastic" hopping games, also skipping rope games.

Then there was the tartan Bay City Roller thing just at the end of primary.

  • Didn't get into dewberry perfume from the Body shop til I went to Uni - loved it !
  • So yes, these things definitely define your era Wink
Asteria · 16/02/2011 21:30

Oooh - thought of more! We used to put the knotted threads in our hair (like friendship bracelets but around a thin bit of hair)- the Spanish girls at our school seemed to be particularly proficient at this!
A massive crush on Andre Agassi was also obligatory.
Marlboro Lights were the fag of choice - back then you could buy singles or 10 for 99p.
We also had our locker keys on hideous flourescent spiral phone wire clips too.
And the biro with red/blue/green/black all in one were the height of cool!
Velvet Alice Bands were shortlived but loved...
