Hampshire sorts

Please tell me there are some normal, non social climbing Hampshire sorts out there, that are not psuedo (how do you spell that?) country folk, up their own arses tossers with massive 4wd cars that run you off the road and have never heard of state education? GRRRRR moved from the North and finding Hampshire tricky!

Saaafhampton here too. No wellies or 4x4, regularly rock up to the school run looking like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards. Pitched somewhere in between Lidl in Shirley and the fragrant Heaven that is Romsey Waitrose. :)

sharbie · 08/02/2011 21:55

used to live just down that very road crystal
Smile went to school down there too

NinkyNonker · 08/02/2011 22:06

Yes to a New Forest/Christchurch meet.

LongtimeinBrussels · 09/02/2011 01:28

Just read through this thread and lots of Pompey comments made me laugh. Pawtsmuff will always hold a special place in my heart even though I've been in Brussels for 25 years!

Do you Southampton lot talk to the Pompey lot then? Wink

massivepants, the north/south thing works both ways. When I went to Bristol (Bristol mind, so not the north of England) to study, my northern friends looked amazed when they found out my dad worked in a factory and we lived in a little house. They thought all southerners were rich/posh and that we didn't have factories!!!

Niecie · 09/02/2011 01:52

LittleMissHissyFit - Blackbushe is in Hampshire, the county border is at The Meadows roundabout. We can claim that jewel for our own!

madwomanintheattic · 09/02/2011 04:31

you do know that aldershot is in hampshire, right?

i suspect a lot has changed since miss joan hunter dunne frequented those parts.

but i'm definitely going to live in hartley wintney when the dcs leave home. because it sounds like jam.

dh thinks i am mad. possibly he's right.

@ the meadows though. and waitrose in frimley green v different ambience to asda in f'bo despite being five minutes apart...

ah, old times.

deepheat · 09/02/2011 08:20

Would love to spend some time on this thread, as I have a divine little cottage nestled away in the New Forest. Sadly, people haven't been clear about their level of income or current social status and I really don't want to be seen mixing with civilians.

HoorahHilda · 09/02/2011 09:02

ooh a New Forest meet up might be fun !

DaftApeth · 09/02/2011 09:20

Perhaps there should be a 4x4 and non-4x4 meet up?Wink

Someone could attend both and feedback to us all whether, in fact, the are any differences between the two groups. I suspect not, unless it is te size o the car parks required Grin

Grockle · 09/02/2011 09:21

I am another Dorset/ Hampshire border girl.

I do not have a 4x4 and DS goes to state school but I do keep chickens and own wellies (black) because we spend hours on the beach and in the Forest.

Am up for a New Forest/ Christchurch meet up too.

Grockle · 09/02/2011 09:26

I love the fragrant heaven that is Waitrose in Romsey. And I quite like Scats next door too [psuedo country person] Grin

HoorahHilda · 09/02/2011 09:36

dh would LOVE a 4x4 , plus a black lab to go with it . ha ha . It seems a people carrier mahoosive just does not cut the mustard ..

tis filthy and full of crap .Is this ok ??

HoorahHilda · 09/02/2011 09:37

OOh yes DaftApeth , what fun !

BlackBag · 09/02/2011 12:24

Moved from picture perfect country cottage just outside Liss to another county. {Waves back at Steep lot]

In Liss we joined the local gym, - Champneys darling, went to the pub, comedy night in Petersfield, but when we left we had no friends to wave good bye to only our lovely elderly neighbours.

After only a year here we felt at home and have built up a really good network of new friends. That bit of Hants is weird everyone gets on the train and goes north, no community in the same way we have found in new area.

I use to live then commute south to Portsmouth and that was a lot more fun.

LittleMissHissyFit · 09/02/2011 13:03

Blackbag Some places are indeed like that, the ones where everyone works somewhere like London are the worst, and I'd have thought the A3 villages are exactly like that.

My Dad lives out that way... Nuff said. Grin

Where we grew up in a tiny village called SW, no bugger would talk to anyone. My Mum's been there over 30 years now and everyone knows her, but there are still some that keep themselves to themselves. There are also those that do Neighbourhood Watch and would set up road blocks and interrogation units if they were allowed to though! Grin

Where I am now, H, people do talk to each other, but usually through the school mum network thing, you still have to really work at it sometimes though...

LittleMissHissyFit · 09/02/2011 13:05

I'm currently saving up for a 4x4.... The Merc A class is lovely, but needs to go...

Not getting a dog though... Have a 5yo DS, that's plenty!

feekychucker · 09/02/2011 14:14

Am in village not far from Hartley Wintney and find it really friendly and everyone takes the time to say hello. Have always lived here so that probably makes a difference. Have never thought of HW as posh!

Tolalola · 09/02/2011 14:16

Not currently in the UK, but when we are I'm sort of in the triangle between Winchester, Andover and Romsey.

Don't think we're posh at all, but we are in the country and I do love Romsey Waitrose Blush.

But I'm nice, promise Grin! Meet up would be good. Although if after mid June I will have to bring a teeny-tiny sproglet!

LittleMissHissyFit · 09/02/2011 14:37

Hartley Wintney is lovely, if I'd have had the money to live there, I definitely would do.

stovies · 09/02/2011 19:17

feekychucker, you must be very posh if you don't think HW is posh! Grin FGS, they have a sign by the duck pond asking you to only feed the ducks wholemeal bread! Wink

I think when the estate agent advertises the 2bed victorian cottages on the Green at 350k as ideal for first time buyers then you know it aint scruffy! Grin

feekychucker · 09/02/2011 20:36

Lol :) I've never seen that sign, am in HW tomorrow so will have to go and have a look now.
HW is a beautiful village, but based on the people I went to school with from there it is not posh! :)
House prices are ridiculous in this area, it's very frustrating when families get split up when younger members are unable to afford to stay here. We have just been lucky.

pommedeterre · 09/02/2011 21:20

Just outside Hants here in Midhurst. Midhurst is where uber posh and uber...not posh... collide.
We are somewhere in the middle in many ways.

vicbar · 09/02/2011 21:23

Im near Winchester but grew up in London and have loads of family from up north. I know what you mean but Im lovely, honest. Where abouts are you ?

stovies · 09/02/2011 21:50
Smile I haven't been to the ducks in a while now that mine are at school but I'm sure it'll still be there.

I remember going to a meeting a few years ago when they were still fighting against the Dilly Lane new houses being built. Someone actually stood up and said, 'once you start building new-build starter homes, you'll get all sorts coming to the village.' Shock
Another woman asked if we were able to object to the statutory percentage of 'affordable homes' that must be included with all new developments!

DH and I just looked at each other aghast that people would say these things out loud.

feekychucker · 09/02/2011 22:07

I'm in Odiham. We get some people like that but they are the minority. We have never been allowed a chip shop in the village as it would attract 'undesirables!'
I love it here, couldn't imagine living anywhere else :)
