To think that food in Aldi looks suspicious

Yesterday I decided to visit Aldi after reading about it on mumsnet. Did not buy a thing. Everything looked a bit weird. Is it just me or this shop is not nice at all?

porcamiseria · 25/01/2011 21:13

nuff said

just get basics

BuzzLightBeer · 25/01/2011 21:16

The face cream and eye cream has won beauty awards, its really good stuff.
WE also use the nappies and wipes, the pasta, sugar, bread, biscuits, chocolate, the coffee, the sausages (75% pork which is very good), mince, orange juice, gnocchi, cheese, wine, danish pastry, meats...everything!

piprabbit · 25/01/2011 21:17

BTW Aldi don't take credit cards - so make sure you have cash or a well-stocked debit card.

redruby · 25/01/2011 21:28

Big fan of Aldi for all the basics, plus their stilton and Brie realllly good, and their nappies at 4p each are fantastic!

gaelicsheep · 25/01/2011 21:36

Nappies seem identical to Tesco's own brand. Ditto their "Weetabix" and "Shreddies". All very good.

purpleknittingmum · 25/01/2011 21:38

Crisps! We get a big multi pack of 18 or 24 for something like £1.59

The ice-cream that is like carte dor, triple chocolate is gorgeous!

Gogopops · 25/01/2011 21:42

I call Aldi my "European Delicatessen".

Is Lidl the same thing?

Niceguy2 · 25/01/2011 22:18

Blatherskite
Right, going to go on Monday and do our shop at Aldi instead. What do I need to try?

manicbmc · 25/01/2011 22:20

I see a theme Grin

I googled lidl and aldi and closest is over a mile away and I don't drive. Oh well, Morrisons for me then Sad

seeker · 25/01/2011 22:46

This is going to sound incredible, but this evening, apart from the champagne, I have done some ironing with my aldi steam generator iron, ds has done his homework using aldi pencils anc crayons, dd has gone to Scouts in her aldi thermal underwear, and I have cleaned the bathroom with aldi bathroom cleaner. Tomorrow morning, both dcs will have aldi vanilla and chocolate brioche for breakfast, and we will all wash our hair with with aldi shampoo! Oh, and I am just about to have some aldi cheese with an aldi apple!

I try to do the odd trip to Aldi and Lidl and often pick up a good bargain. I have no problems with quality or brands but yet to manage a weekly shop at either of them Confused. I live in a large town and their stores are a reasonble size but still I can't see using them for the majority of my shopping.

We're often in Europe for family holidays, visit Lidl and still can't pick food to last for a few days. Last year we went into a French Lidl, got lots of sparkling wine, massive bottle of balsamic vinegar, few other bits. All great value but then had to dash over to a small supermarket over the road (Sunday in France, had to make it there by 12) so we had enough to make a couple of proper meals.

Maybe I should make it my mission, for one week, to only top up my monthly shop at Aldi!

gaelicsheep · 25/01/2011 23:08

Sadly Seeker, I could say the same for Tesco.

ItsGraceAgain · 25/01/2011 23:13

Bresaola at £1.49 for 80g. It's really good, too :)

outnumbered2to1 · 25/01/2011 23:35

I love Aldi because i can get all the food there i loved to eat when i lived in austria. And even some "normal" food like bacon and chicken and tomatoes and cold meat...

I also love their fresh cut flowers as they last a helluva lot longer than any i have bought from Sainsburys Asda or Tesco.....

LacksDaisies · 25/01/2011 23:39

oooh, just remembered, the "crema di...." ice cream range in Lidl is to die for!

Crema di Noccilato, Crema di Tiramisu (very grown up tasting) and the latest one involved some sort of strudelly appley flavour...yum yum yum. Kids love it.

If we spend £75 in Aldi it's an expensive shop. If we avoid the middle aisle DH (much better with lists) can get the shop down to £50. I always do a top up midweek as I need to go to Sainsbos or Waitrose for gluten free stuff, and our milk is delivered...though it looks like we'd be cheaper getting the milk in Aldi.

happybubblebrain · 26/01/2011 00:02

My formula for shopping is:

Aldis - for fresh food.
Asda - for freezer food.
Sainsburys - for shelf food.
Tescos & M&S - for Christmas.

They all have their uses.

JaquesTouatte · 26/01/2011 02:52

I was in ALDI yesterday, and there was only one thing in there that looked weird. It was the snooty cow going around suspiciously eyeing up stuff as if it was somehow inferior to the usual crap she buys at Waitrose.

ILikeMilk · 26/01/2011 09:42

Just you. Not suspicious, just foreign. I realize for some people that's the same thing.........

Seeker, I am foreign too. And I loved shopping in Monoprix while living in Paris, no probs there.

ILikeMilk · 26/01/2011 09:43

Well it was not me Jaques, I have not done any shopping yet for today :)

I expect the OP has decided Aldi is yet another aspect of NotLondon life she dislikes

Lol Ilovesooty, spot on :)

Niceguy2

No sugar cloudy lemonade 39p much better than Tesco's.

Mentioned the Grapefruit marmalade earlier in this thread. My DS likes their ribs in BBQ sauce better than the Tesco's ones.

Hullygully · 26/01/2011 10:33

What IS this Aldi??

backwardpossom · 26/01/2011 10:54

We buy our shopping in Lidl and it's excellent value. Because of the money we save, we can afford to buy our meat from the butcher, which is so much tastier than supermarket bought.

rockinhippy · 26/01/2011 11:25

Well I've just got in from another trip to my local Aldis (& Sains) .....& it was packed & there was a HUGE queueShock its usually quiet

the power of MN at it again??Confused

thanks to this thread I now have Disco biscuits, (DD will LOVE thoseGrin Washing Powder, grapefuit marmalade (though have already tried most of the Grandessa conserve range & find them to be good, especially the Crunchy Peanut butter & Wild Blossom Honey) & another Salmon Wellington ......I'd forgotten about those until I spotted someone mention it on here....I bought 1 on a whim a few months back & it was surprisingly delicious :)... & I'm a food snob & NEVER buy shop baked pies or ready meals etc, as they just never stand up to home cooked....this does :)

& having just done Aldi & Sainsbury I've realised the other thing I prefer about ALDI, is that is the label says Artificial Colour, Preservative Free.......they don't then still think sticking fake sugars in there is acceptableHmm....as do all the othersHmm
