To think that food in Aldi looks suspicious

Yesterday I decided to visit Aldi after reading about it on mumsnet. Did not buy a thing. Everything looked a bit weird. Is it just me or this shop is not nice at all?

OP posts:

most of them I ignore actually jaffa otherwise I wouldn't eat! Just no booze and caffeine but mostly the latter gives me acid...

WorkInProgress · 25/01/2011 16:27

Am I the only person who does a big shop in Aldi? Every time I go in there I have a trolley full, everyone else in there is buying just a few things..Makes me self consious.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 25/01/2011 16:28

Yeah, they're all 'cereal killers' [bwink]

propercrimbo · 25/01/2011 16:30

WIP I DO!! not a weirdo!

PlanetLizard · 25/01/2011 16:32

YABU. There are a lot of nice things at ALDI. You'll also find things you don't like, but that is trial and error like shopping anywhere.

WorkInProgress · 25/01/2011 16:35

Phew, not just me then. It's quite a challenge spending over £100 in there, can't say that for Sainsburys or Waitrose ( spent £70 on a few things for lunch there once.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 25/01/2011 16:42

The custard brioche is bloody lovely, not keen on any of the other bread tho

rockinhippy · 25/01/2011 16:45

Some of their face creams, make up etc are pretty good too, & ridiculously cheap, I was always a Clarins snob, but Aldis stuff have won several awards etc, I bought my 1st lot for DH (there goes the tough biker imageGrin& was so surprised at how nice it was...I kept it for myself :)

The 1 thing I will say though, they do seem to stock up some stuff according to whats available, so often run out of things & then you don't see it again for weeks, certainly the case with ours, so might be what happened with your favoured wine IlikeMilk

I always stock up on coffee & Cranberry & the Cat treats as they are things they do tend to sell out of, I would also stock up on the fabulous packs of smoothie cartons, but they've not had those in a few month now :(

I also DO agree that you CAN go wrong with rice & pasta, but as ALDIS is a reasonable quality Italian pasta, it beats Sainsbury's etc more expensive own brands hands down

We ALSO cook with a lot of things such as Lentils seeds & pulses....but I would never buy those from Sainsbury's, Morrisons or the likes anywayConfused

& Aldis DO do some exotic fruits too, bought Figs & mango ealier

We also love their bleach, washing up liquid & dishwasher tabs, but not yet tried their laundry stuff, as we need to be careful with those.....so thanks ConnoR I'll give that a try next time I go now :)

Mymblesson · 25/01/2011 16:50

Am I the only person who does a big shop in Aldi?

Certainly not! We do a big shop there every week!

sloggies · 25/01/2011 16:53

Don't think its got any more additives than anywhere else...

Manic lol about the wine...

They do really excellent chox, that are just as good as the dearer Seashell ones, can't remember what they are called...

instantfamily · 25/01/2011 17:03

YANBU. It gives me the creeps and I am german!

I get my laundry detergent from Aldi, and I once, crazily, went on the first day that Kids' Moonboots were on offer and almost got mauled.

Apparently they have some very good products but I find it's not worth the cheap feel changing supermarket for.

2old4thislark · 25/01/2011 17:10

I go in ours now and then and always come out with lost of yummy things I didn't plan on getting. The brioche loaf is yummy. Bought my turkey crown for christmas in Aldi and it was only £10 and bloody lovely! Loving the grapefruit marmalade (59p) at the moment.

Aldi came out well against other supermarket own brands in taste tests in the paper recently. I'm trying to alternate it with a Tesco shops as our Tescos is just too big now.

I like that it looks foreign as it feels like you're on holiday Grin

usualsuspect · 25/01/2011 17:15

I don't like Aldi ..The choice is very limited ,although the fake jaffa cakes are very good

nymphadora · 25/01/2011 17:20

We spent £60 before Xmas & I was carrying dd3 as the trolley was too full so we used her seat!

MissB75 · 25/01/2011 17:21

Lidl is much better than Aldi - nicer food and better value.

WorkInProgress · 25/01/2011 17:23

I just got the 'cereal killers' joke..

WeeSonsieWummin · 25/01/2011 17:30

Oh you're missing out ILikeMilk - Aldi is fab. Mind you I'm a bit of a Supermarket Slut and quite like them all, well apart from Morrison's, and buy bits and bobs from each, although generally main shop is from Sainsbury's. What I like best is that it is so fast at Aldi, you can be done and dusted in superquick time. We're planning an Aldi February and trying not to shop in any of the others and see if we can cut our shopping bill down a bit and save some money for wine essential family items [bwink]

TheVisitor - washing powder is fabulastic!

Catsmamma · 25/01/2011 17:31

More fool you to the OP!

I love aldi and lidl, it's almost like real shopping, go when the stuff is delivered, pick the items you want... a little harder in aldi as they prepack a bit more but lidl are very free and easy with the veg, all sorts of random sized stuff

deli meats are brilliant

their promos are fab, the italian "week" in lidl is ace for deli range pasta/ sauces/ bread sticks!

If you'd sooner waste your pennies in a UK supermarket then you are welcome! :P

Lidl used to do tinned dauphinois potatoes which were better than any of the chilled ones in any of the bigger supermarkets...

Dont think they do them now but I often go in to check, in hope.

rockinhippy · 25/01/2011 17:37

I'm afraid I DO hate Lidl though, but think that might be a lot more to do with where our local one is, & therefore the type of people it attracts....talk about bloody rednecksShock

& our Morrisons is okay too, its pretty much local corner shop, so not really that bad, SIL law travels from out of town to shop there & she IS a snob, & I've not heard her complain....I would still rather a slight trek to Aldis though....but you wouldn't get me in Lidls again if they paid me

I love going to Aldi. Reminds me of the supermarkets abroad. I get that holiday feeling when I shop there.

manicbmc · 25/01/2011 19:38

Mmm might just have to google and find out how far my nearest Aldi/Lidl is.

Having said that, it's a Sainsbury online shop this week as dp is away and I cannot be bothered dragging a mardy teenager round. Plus I'm a lazy bugger. Grin

huffythethreadslayer · 25/01/2011 19:38

Milk in Aldi and Lidl, £1 for big bottle that costs £1.54 at Tesco/Sainsbury/Morrisons, unless there's an offer on.

I buy lots of milk, so it's worth popping in there just for that. Also, I love Aldi's pesto sauces, cost less than the branded ones and tastes much more fresh imo. Bin bags are great and so much cheaper than Sainsbos. I'm a fan of tart shopping with my groceries.
