To think that food in Aldi looks suspicious

Yesterday I decided to visit Aldi after reading about it on mumsnet. Did not buy a thing. Everything looked a bit weird. Is it just me or this shop is not nice at all?

memphis83 · 25/01/2011 14:50

there sausages and fake frosties are awful, but there cheese is lovely as is there salami, also the Disco biscuits are nothing less than special!!! and their frozen stonebaked pizza is amazing!!!

AttillaTheMum · 25/01/2011 14:51

Sorry - DD got hold of the laptop,

My mum works in Aldi head office.

She brings lots of bits round to me and I am an Aldi convert. the baked camembert and individual shandy tis delish

seperatly, not some half cocked idea of dinner! Hmm

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 14:51

And the wine did not impress me to be honest.

memphis83 · 25/01/2011 14:51

oh and there fruit and veg were voted some of the best from supermarkets

Kewcumber · 25/01/2011 14:51

Aldi have a more limited range of convenience foods, few exotic fruit (though I beleive it does depend on the manager) plenty of rice, lentils etc and fresh salad veg. Haven't tried their fresh meat but then I think most supermarket fresh meat (particularly Sainsburys) is tasteless

I have never bought pasta anywhere and though - "oh how horrible" but concede that because I haven't done it that it still may be possible though I can't imagine what you have to do with flour and water to make it inedible.

AttillaTheMum · 25/01/2011 14:51

also the chocolate brownie cookies -mmmmmm

Kewcumber · 25/01/2011 14:52

and I don;t drink so no worries there.

Kewcumber · 25/01/2011 14:52

PMSL how can you say you're not anti - you can;t think of a single thing about it you liked!? Grin

TheVisitor · 25/01/2011 14:53

I love Aldi, good quality stuff at good prices. I love their tomato and red pepper soup - proper bits of veg in it and really tasty. Their Macon Village wine is pretty good. I buy the majority of my fruit and veg there and it lasts longer than what you buy at shitey Tesco. Free range eggs for under a quid per half dozen.

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 14:54

Kewcumber, I have not actually bought anything from there so cant comment on the taste. But wine choice was poor to be honest.

I love aldi and it has halved our food bill over the past year. Cereals are lovely, high juice squash. Non bio washing liquid is fine for baby eczema . Brioche pannini Chicken italian ham that amazing vegetable pizza , cheese, great cheap vegetables, crisps etc.

jaffacake79 · 25/01/2011 14:55

Kewcumber :) Yes, you have a point, you can't go far wrong with pasta and rice, but I particularly like the price of them! And they do nice, different pastas on occasion too :D AND the pesto is good.
AND they do a fab £7.99 bottle of Barolo which is one of my most favourite wines in the world so I'm a happy bunny. Grin

jaffacake79 · 25/01/2011 14:58

Wine choice was poor?! WTF?
We're really into nice wine and have some absolutely amazing ones from there. As I've said before they do a great Barolo, some really good St Emilion's and very good Chianti. I'm married to an Italian so am biased towards Italian wines, but there also some very very good new world wines if you look hard enough.
Yes, everything's not as clinically presented, and it can sometimes be a bit of a bunfight trying to find what you want but you can find some really super things in there. IF you're willing to look!

Remotew · 25/01/2011 15:00

Thanks I've got some tips here so think I will give it a go again, but will be picky.

HonestyBox · 25/01/2011 15:01

YANBU, a few things in Aldi are worth buying but not very much. The extra virgin olive oil is good but doesn't have as good a taste as a more expensive bottle. Same with the wine I'm afraid, I really wanted to like the stuff from there too. You get what you pay for I suppose.

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 15:01

Jaffacake, wea are really into wine too, so usually order by case from independent merchants/bring ourselves from our trips to France/Germany/Italy etc. Waitrose is good for wine too. The most expensive wine I've seen in our "local" Aldi was about a fiver, and def not Barolo, so it is probably depends on the shop too.

I'd like to set the OP a challenge. Next time you go near Aldi, pop in and buy the bits for a single meal.
Then report back on how you and your family found it.

Kewcumber · 25/01/2011 15:02

"I have not actually bought anything from there so cant comment on the taste" sorry but this made me ROFLMAO! Grin Grin

So you haven;t actually ever bought or tasted anything fom ALdi but don't like it Grin

Sorry to snigger but surely you must know how mad that sounds!

I would be having the "but you have to try it before you decide you don;t like it" talk if it were my 5 year old...

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 15:05

LOL Piprabbit, I might actually try some of the things that were recommended on this thread the next time I pass Aldi.

YABU. Aldi food is good quality like anywhere else. Just because its not covered in brands.

They have same number of additives as every other supermarket. You're totally being A SNOB.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 25/01/2011 15:15

I'm just back from ours! I go every week for the things that are good value and which I prefer- these are

jams and great selection of marmalades for under a quid each

Their specially selected columbian coffee, at £1.99 is almost as good as Alta rica and less than half the price!

Cheese is good, and good value- mozarella for 47p compared to Tesco at 89p, good parmesan etc

Always get my potatoes there (69p at the moment) and carrots (which are mainly for the rabbits, but taste fine!)Get lots of veg for the rabbits, and their broccoli etc is always good value and seems to last fine.

Their frozen pizza baguettes are much loved by my fussy children, and the right size for lunch.

Dishwasher tablets. Tissues for 59p a box (try getting them for under a pound elsewhere)

Morning goods- pain au chocolats/ croissants/ brioche- great value

I guess you have to know what you are looking for!

nymphadora · 25/01/2011 15:24

Cheese is fantastic, we got some 'posh' pasta there before Xmas which was cheaper than tesco usual. If you buy the stuff which is continental rather than UK style its better (brioche rather than sliced breadfor example)

Niceguy2 · 25/01/2011 15:31

I saw the light years ago before it was almost fashionable to shop at Aldi.

For your basics you can't go wrong. Who cares what the label looks like for 2l of milk. I pay £1 versus £1.59 or more at Tesco.

Meat comes from a dead animal. The meat I've bought is on a par, if not better than Tesco at a fraction of the price.

Veg are grown. You can't really argue Tesco/Asda carrot's taste better than an Aldi one.

I don't drink but my DD prefers their Irish Creme to Baileys. Particularly annoying given I'd just bought two bottles at xmas and the Aldi one was half the price.

Oh and the "specially selected" chocolate chip cookies are to die for. We go through about 3 boxes of them a week! Shock

So IlikeMilk, sure....you go pay over the odds for exactly the same, if not worse quality. Means I have one less person blocking my aisle.

NetworkGuy · 25/01/2011 15:33

I tend to use Lidl (walking distance) but the Aldi in town is perhaps double or treble the size and certainly busy when I do go past. Aldi on same retail park as Sainsburys.

No Waitrose but we have 24 hour Asda and Tesco plus several Lidl, and (again walking distance) Iceland and Somerfield (Co-Op owned, previously a Kwik Save and not in a similar league to Sainsburys but priced just as high for milk etc).

On food, I suspect it is the suspicion of unknown brands that might be tainting views.
